Reading Challenge for 2011
@Julia - WOW!! 144 - that is a fantastic goal to work towards. And it looks like you are well on your way to completing your goal with 31 read so far. Go Julia!!
I'm aiming for 52 books this year. I just finished reading book 13, so I'm 25% of the way just over 20% of the way into the year. (This will be the most math you will get from me this year.)I always read a variety of different types of books (and often a couple of books at the same time). I'm continuing to do that this year.
Right now, I'm reading a lot of short fiction. I'm discovering all kinds of fabulous new (or new-to-me) authors.
@Ann - That is a fabulous goal you have and looks like you are track. (Don't worry, there are NO math tests here - heheheh) Ohhhh sounds interesting...any authors you would like to share with the group who you have enjoyed reading so far?
I loved Dark Roots by Cate Kennedy, Light Lifting by Alexander Macleod, and If I Loved You I Would Tell You This by Robin Black.
I'm aiming to finish a minimum of 2 books a week, so at least 104 this year. I've finished 26 books so far, so I'm ahead of that pace.
@Leslie - that is AWESOME! Congrats to you for being focused and on your way to completing your goal!
I actually haven't counted before, so I'm curious to see just how many books I do read. I probably underestimated, so your more impressive goal of 144, Julia, might turn into mine, too! I just know that my to-read list is now nearing the last quarter or so of a third notebook. Time to start crossing more off the list instead of just adding to it.If I had cable television, I'd probably read less. So the rabbit ears on my TV play a positive role in my reading.
My goal is to read 100 books this year, but I probably should revamp it and try for more! I really like to read! I want to read more classics and put more Canadian authors in my list.... as long as I can get them from the library! (And they're pretty good about having the majority of what's out there!).
I,like some of you, have never kept arunning total of books that I was reading until this year. The totals are begining to scare me a little! I believe that I am on number 21! Considering that I work full time and have 2 kids and three dogs I would not have believed it if I was not keeping track. Oh and having recieved an e-reader for Yule has been so very enabling. I have never before had the ability to buy books naked in the bathtub!
@Sue - WOW! that is a great goal and I wish you much success. Keep us in the loop how you are doing!@Kilgallen - You are amazing! I mean raising kids (and dogs) and still having the ability to read that many books this year (albeit in a bathtub naked) you are hilarious!!
My personal challenge is to read 75 books this year. I have read 13 so far with 3 on the go right now. My KOBO definitely enables me to read way more books than before.
My goal is to finish reading the rest of the Giller prize winners. I'm about 1/3 of the way done, and would like to finish. I'm reading from the newest to the oldest, but am still waiting to get the 2010 winning book. I am reading other books too at the same time because I like a little variety. I'm going to concentrate on historical fiction for my other books I think. Right now I'm reading Elizabeth I by Margaret George. Hopefully, by the end of the year, I will have read 75 books.
@Lauren - Nice goal! You are on your way...keep it up!@Shirley - Interesting way to read more Canadian literature and historical fiction. That is good goal to have, keep us in the loop how you are doing. Happy Reading!
How is everyone doing with your goals?I just finished my 12th book (out of 50). Only 38 more to go....woohoo!

Nice job on your goal
I'm on my tenth book (out of fifty also)
My goal is 150 this year. Last year I made it to 145 and was bummed. This year I am already up to 54 and I am more confident about making it. I love to read almost anything except drama so a lot of the Canadian Award winners aren't my style.
Deanna wrote: "My goal is 150 this year. ..."@Deanna - Wow, that is a great goal. I know how you feel as I too did not make my goal last year. Sounds by what you read so far that you are well on your way of meeting and beating your goal! Good luck and keep us in the loop where you as you finish books.
So - decided to update my goal after all! I want to try and read 144 books! Twelve a month shouldn't be too hard....right?! It'll be a stretch but I'm going to give it a whirl!
Sue wrote: "So - decided to update my goal after all! I want to try and read 144 books! Twelve a month ...WHOA! I am impressed with you, Sue! You go, girl!

I'm going!!!! whoo hah!
I'm shooting for 100 this year, and am at 28 so far. I've managed to squeeze in some extra reading time, and fit in some of the classics, this year by downloading the free audio books on my iPod and listening to them on my commute to/from work. Always looking for ways to fit more books into my life! ;)
Linette wrote: "I'm shooting for 100 this year, and am at 28 so far. I've managed to ..."That is a fabulous goal, Linette. Keep at it and let us know how you are doing each month. :)
UPDATE: I just finished by 14th book - yeah! 36 more to go!How is your reading coming along? Where are you at?
I have challenged myself, here on the GR 2011 reading challenge, to read 70 books. I finished #21 this past weekend and have two books on the go right now. I have been reading fairly steadily, though I have had a lot more bonus reading time than usual, lately. Funnily enough, I always thought I was a fast reader until I joined GR and i) participated in reading challenges (like the Seasonal Reading Challenge or Reading with Style challenge); and ii) I looked at people's bookshelves - particularly those who shelve by year read. Wowzers, there are some serious speed-readers on her!Julia, 144 books boggles my mind!!! It seems you are well on your way to hitting your target
:D
My reading goal is 75 books which I have completed 45 books thus far. I'm thinking about actually adding on to my goal and increasing the number. I have been reading a little like a machine it feels like lately so I may be slowing down and not sure if increasing the number will encourage or discourage me.
Margaret wrote: "My reading goal is 75 books which I have completed 45 books thus far. I'm thinking about actually adding on to my goal and increasing the number. I have been reading a little like a machine it fee..."Holy cow, Margaret!! Seems like you will surpass your goal!

michael crummey is a great newish canadian writer with a great book of short stories called flesh and blood, I believe, that you might really enjoy

My method is to have a serious book to read and contemplate in the early morning, often of a philopsophical nature, spiritual or scientific. My carry around book is often fiction of some kind, or travel or poetry. I figure I read between 40-120 pages a day, all things depending. The computer interferes with my reading definately. I dont do tv but I do have a music habit and have been rather addicted to you tube, less since I discovered goodreads. I have deliberately slowed myself down somewhat because I want to retain and not mixup my books. So I alternate threads of interest and my goal is stay alert till I've crossed off the last of my to-read list.
Magdelanye wrote: "VWrulesChick wrote: "I created this thread/folder for those who have reading goals ..."Kudos to you on sticking with your method and good luck in finish your TBR list! (funny thing with me, is that my TBR shelf keeps growing) hehe
Kudos to you on sticking with your method and good luck in finish your TBR list! (funny..."the TBR shelf will keep growing as long as good books keep getting written, and of course there is the ever expanding backlist, as ones literary horizons expand.
I am making it a point right now to read some of the things I missed first time around, little known at least to me. Thats because I spent about 15 years reading mainly feminist theory and eastern phiosophy. I'm also getting some good ideas from this site.
I have given myself a goal of 50 books this year. Primarily fiction, I have been hacking away at my mostly unread collection of Premier Classics as well as many of the books I bought years ago and have yet to tackle. I have read 16 so far. Goodreads tells me that is 32% and I am 1 book ahead of schedule :)
Carolyn wrote: "I have given myself a goal of 50 books this year. Primarily fiction, I have been hac ..."Yeah - that is a great goal to have, Carolyn! That is fabulous that you have already completed about one-third of your goal. Keep up the great reading! :)
Just finished my 50th book of the year, so I'm well ahead on my goal of 104 (average 2 books a week)! And I'm currently reading an interesting Canadian novel: God's sparrows by Philip Child. It's out of print, unfortunately; I borrowed my copy from a friend who studied under Child years ago at U of Toronto. Anyway, it's an interesting novel about WWI (first published 1937) that deserves to be better known than it is.
Just finished my 68th book with a goal of 120. Am trying this year to read more Canadian authors, classics and books by authors that I was unfamilar with. Started off strong by reading 3 or 4 books a week (and some weeks 6) but have really slowed down to 2 or 3.
Whoa! Leslie and Mikela - awesome job on completing so many books so far into 2011. I am so impressed. Keep going!!
Wow you girls really rock ! Your challenges are very impressive !! My challenge is really small comparing to yours .... 35 books ! I'm up to 17 books so I think I'm doing pretty good. Also part of my challenge is to really try new authors and make sure I read both English and French books. Don't stop inspiring me !!
Lol, my challenge isn't really so impressive. Unlike those of you who are busy working, raising children, shopping, going to school and generally conducting very busy lives, my life is reading. To get even one book read with all that is going on in your lives is what I find so impressive.
My goal for this year is to continue the project I started of reading all the classic novels from Daniel S. Burt's book The Novel 100: The greatest classic novels of all time. I have a blog and decided it would be fun to have a project to blog about. My goal was to read 15 this year. I figured if I averaged a book every 3 weeks it would reach about 15. So far I am ahead by 4 books and thats saying a lot since most of the classics are between 800 and 1000 pages!Check out my blog of it at www.magic-and-mystery.blogspot.com. I also have a goodreads group called the novel 100 as well.
Sadly there aren't any canadian authors on the list but I check out this group every now and again. So far my favorite Canadian author is David Adams Richards.
Miranda wrote: "My goal for this year is to continue the project I started of reading all the classic nov..."Interesting goal, Miranda. Good luck on reading your 100 novels of the classics.

So my personal goal for 2011 is to read 50 books total (last year I made it to 44 books). I know its a little nutty as it works out to about 1 book a week. Within this goal, I am trying to focus on reading more Canadian Literature, as well as, the Classics.
So what is your goal this year? Is it a particular number you have in mind? or at least gage how many books you are consuming? Or is a specific genre or author you wish to pursue?
Here to 2011 ! Cheers!
