1376766 Before I joined GR, I was a certified "re-reader". I had a group of books that I would read, and read, and read, and read... and read. Haha. I don't know how many times I read the following books/series:

The Lord of the Rings
The Harry Potter Series
The Dark Tower Series
The Stand
The Shining
Little Women
The Talisman
I Know This Much Is True
A Time To Kill
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Season of Passage

Those are my stand-by books, my go-to, comfort books. When I'm at a loss for something that will remind me of "home" I pick one of those.

1405862 Kat, I used to read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn each year, haven't for awhile but for me, every year I came away with a different impression of the book.

122452 I read Jane Eyre once a year, at the end of every year. I'd been a reader for many, many years before I read it in middle school...but it was the first book I ever adored. And every year, I find something new in it, or find that my perspective on something within it has changed. It's a lovely tradition.

2296859 I reread lots of series, such as harry potter, narnia, series of unfortunate events and his dark materials. I love returning to them :D I don't know what it is about series in particular, it's just great to get lost in them all again.
I've read Anne Frank and Tietam Brown at least once a year for the last 6 years
Stephen King, Margaret Atwood, Charles Dickens and Angela Carter and Roald Dahl(particularly his tales of the unexpected, they're brilliant) are authors I reread a lot
There's something magical about these books for me, I think maybe because I was about 13 when I first read a lot of them which is a very impressionable age.

message 49: by Fiona (new)

1356469 There's some books I've read over and over, usually short ones:

Howls Moving Castle and Dogsbody by Diana Wynne Jones and the Harry Potter series.

message 48: by Erin (new)

2196399 I've end up re-reading Pride and Prejudice about once a year. For some reason the more I read that book the more I enjoy it. Ender's Game is also on my to re-read list, though I have not gotten to it yet.

message 47: by Simon (new)

1127870 I'd like to go over Jared Diamond's Collapse How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed Collapse and Guns, Germs, and Steel Guns Germs and Steel, but they are quite bulky and require some brain engagement as well as quite a bit of time. Yet, their message rings loudly in my mind - we, humans, are product of evolutionary powers and we should forget this.

message 46: by Nonsense (new)

2313513 I agree. I love re-reading books, and i re-read twilight on a regular basis too. ;)

message 45: by Carol (new)

2046576 I admit I read the Vampire Chronicles on a regular basis!
Probably Twilight is mynew regular basis book.

Re-reading is always magical!

message 44: by (G)Emma (new)

611251 LOL, No big deal! I think it's great that you love YA novels, and everyone has the right to their opinon!

message 43: by Sharee (last edited Aug 22, 2008 12:38AM) (new)

1067541 Okay, so I know that there are some anti-Stephenie Meyer/Twilight readers in this group, so I think I'll just acknowledge that fact before I tell everyone that I've read the Twilight Series several times through and just love and devour them with each read and sometimes just skip to the good parts and re-read those parts and certain key portions over and over and over again before I even put the book down. *sigh of contentment* Okay, good. Glad I got that off my chest!!!

Aside from the Twilight series, I've found myself re-reading the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld a couple of times. I enjoy the perspective and the writing in Westerfeld's books. I believe it will go on my list of "default" books - the kinds that you read when you're in the mood for a good read, but don't have the time to go to the library - along with the Twilight series. :) Huzzah for series! ...and YA novels in general!!

message 42: by Belinda (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 I wish I could read 'Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell' every year. I love that book to pieces.

message 41: by Jesse (new)

721727 Hey Rachelle,

Could you tell me which translation of War and Peace you enjoy. Some of us may be reading it in December. Thanks.

message 40: by Jenn (new)

1417600 I have read The Summer Sisters, by Judy Blume about 15-20 times. I think its the only one I have read more than twice

message 39: by Linda (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 Sera,

I'm with you. I am breathless with just trying to keep up with the group(s). Have to admit, though, I did re-read The Book of Abraham - Marek Halter. Story of a Jewish family of scribes from before Christ to WWII and their struggle to maintain the history of the family.

message 38: by Sera (new)

576203 I rarely re-read books - too many books, too little time :)

message 37: by Jessica (new)

1133601 I reread the Harry Potter series about once a year. It's good that my boyfriend and I started reading them to each other because now I can multitask and also read other books at the same time.

I used to reread books all the time, more specifically The Diary of Anne Frank, but as I have been aquiring more new books, I feel like I don't have the time to go back and reread some of my favorites.

message 36: by Jackie (new)

1176067 I don't reread either. There are just too many on the ever growing TBR list to look back. I have a pretty good memory, so I tend to remember the good stories. There are some books that I have picked up and just couldn't finish reading for whatever reason. Maybe I picked it up at the wrong time. One of these is The Life of Pi, which someday I hope to finish.

message 35: by Leila (new)

1238671 The only books that I have read on a regularly basis are the Harry Potter series and the Twilight series. I especially cannot get enough of Twilight. If I for instance am sad, need something to do or such, I could just pick one of the books up and read a random chapter. It makes me feel good.

message 34: by Shannon (new)

1001214 I don't reread books either, like Catamorandi, I have too many on my TBR list that I would rather read first. I am slowly adding some of the ones we were forced to read in school to my TBR list, as I know I didn't appreciate them (and in many cases didn't completely read them) then, so would like to give them a better shot - on my own time.

message 33: by Allison (new)

1415539 I re-read The Princess Bride every few years.

And I read The Undomestic Goddess by Sophie Kinsella every summer... it's my favorite fluffy summer read.

message 32: by April (new)

933294 I have a HORRIBLE memory, so sometimes I re-read unintentionally. I also have a few favorites that I will pull out and read in part (or entirely if I have the inclination): Harry Potter series, Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl, select Shakespeare, Atlas Shrugged. The last one is just because I haven't ever been able to slog through it so I pick it up every year with renewed hope.

message 31: by Kathy (last edited Aug 19, 2008 06:18AM) (new)

681853 I've re-read several books, and they are very different....no trend there.

Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
The Stand by Stephen King (King books in general)
The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck
April Morning by Howard Fast
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
I Am Legend by Richard Matheson
Gone With The Wind by Margaret Mitchell

And who knows, maybe more books will be added to this list in the future.

message 30: by Liz (new)

1181304 I have only read, I believe, two books once again - Night and Of Mice and Men. There are so many books to read (and most of them are on my TBR pile or list, LOL), that I don't re-read.

That also applies to reading more than one or two written by an author, since I find that most prolific authors continually re-write their books - same plot, different characters, place, and time.

message 29: by Emma (new)

1432879 I've read The Golden Compass and the Sally Lockhart Series about 6 or 7 times. They're just cozy like comfort food and can make you feel at home even if you are miles away. I also find myself reading The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Ella Enchanted, and The Picture of Dorian Gray a fair bit.

I first read all of those when I was 10-13. The books you read when young can become your own personal classics.

message 28: by Catamorandi (new)

754081 You are not alone, Lori. I don't like rereading books either. There are too many books that I want to read that I haven't yet. I have 3 thousand books on my TBR list. I can't take the time to reread books.

message 27: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

369169 I dont like rereading books. I must be a minority. I reread Catcher in the Rye last year, just because I first read it in HS and wanted to refresh my memory. I reread Lord of the Flies for the same reason. But that was only a once and done sort of thing.....

message 26: by Joanie (new)

279142 I've re-read To Kill a Mockingbird multiple times, Catcher in the Rye, Prince of Tides, and Beach Music 3 times each. I haven't re-read all the HP books yet but I plan to soon.

message 25: by Jaime (new)

1052511 I read The Catcher in the Rye and The Things They Carried every couple of years or so...

message 24: by Nikki (new)

575042 I re-read Harry Potter pretty frequently, and listen to the audio books as well. Like someone else mentioned above me....I always find new things!

I've read To Kill a Mockingbird several times, but not in the last six or seven years.

Most (but not all) books by Michael Chabon (especially Mysteries of Pittsburgh and Wonder Boys) on my shelf are tattered from many re-reads.

Little Women gets pulled off the shelf and read probably once every two years since I was...oh 12 or 13 years old. In fact, I think it might be time for another reread of that one! Same with Jane Eyre.

These books are like my friends, I need to visit them every now and then so we stay familiar.

message 23: by Macy (new)

193626 My most common re-reads are my fantasy books: Lord of the Rings, Narnia and Harry Potter. I've read them all countless times. I also re-read Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead fairly often. When I'm looking for something light I read A Wrinkle in Time and the rest of the series. About every 3-5 years I read Mists of Avalon. My favorite thing about re-reading books is that they are new each time. Despite the fact that I've read HP dozens of times, I always find soemthing new. As my life changes, I see different aspects of a story.

message 22: by JT (new)

1300107 The Harry Potter series are books that I can read again and again.

Also, Agatha Christie. I can be away from those books for several years, completely forget "whodunit" and read them with enjoyment all over again. In fact, I am in the process of reading her entire body of mystery work right now.

message 21: by Hayley (new)

904665 I re-read the Harry Potter books and I even studied them at University for my children lit unit.

I re-read Stephen King a lot, I think I have a small obession there but not too bad because some of his latest stuff hasn't been brilliant, I've re-read Cell a half dozen times.

I also read Philip Pullmans Dark Materials Trilogy more than once, the books are rather good.

message 20: by Maureen (new)

1262542 Outlander by Diana Gabaldon I used to read annually but haven't in awhile. Charlotte's Web I and The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe were reread countless times up through adolescence. The Fountainhead I would reread but foolishly I lent out my copy as well. So, lately, no I haven't been rereading anything in particular but would be willing to go back to To Kill a Mocking Bird if I had a copy but like someone else mentioned above there are so many other fabulous books out there that I haven't read once!

message 19: by Jess (new)

901103 I read the Harry Potter books once a year or so. and then I read over the Stephanie Plum books more than once as well. I've also read the twilight series more than once.

message 18: by Susanna (new)

1109068 The Lord of the Rings I've read I don't know how many times. It must be at least 30.

I've read Pride and Prejudice a good many times, too.

Most of the books I had as a kid I read several times at least, and the favorites in the high multiples (particularly the Narnia and Oz books).

I've read a lot of Agatha Christie, and I have such a poor memory for which plot goes with which title (with a very few exceptions), that I've read a number several times without even realizing it, I'm sure.

message 17: by Abigail (new)

1432413 I would reread The Fountainhead, but I lost my copy shortly after acquiring it eight years ago and haven't gotten a new one yet. I liked Atlas Shrugged, but I don't think I could ever read it again. Sometimes I pick up a bit of The Dark Tower to reread.
I used to read The Chronicles of Narnia at least once a year, but I loaned them out three years ago and sadly never got the back. But as soon as I get another set, I will probably continue the tradition.

message 16: by Liesl (new)

637576 She'Davia -- I was quite young when I first tried to read Atlas Shrugged, and wasn't really able to get into it. I tried The Fountainhead and really liked it, so went back to Atlas a couple of years later and was able to read and really love it. It's been one of my favorites ever since. You might want to give it some time and try again.

message 15: by She'Davia (new)

1097655 liesl, I loved The Fountainhead but couldnt really get into Atlas Shrugged

message 14: by Liesl (last edited Feb 25, 2009 03:24AM) (new)

637576 I have a bookshelf called "plan to read again" with ten books on it:

1. Les Miserables
2. Hawaii
3. Atlas Shrugged
4. Tully (by Paullina Simons)
5. Diana (by R.F. Delderfield)
6. The Fountainhead
7. Islandia (by Austin Tappan Wright
8. The Treasures of Major League Baseball
9. What Now? (by Ann Patchett)
10. The Shack

The first five are my all time favorites that I have read many times (as Scott said -- I'm old), The Fountainhead and Islandia I've read a couple of times each and the rest are newly added this year.

message 13: by Logan (new)

70078 Ken, I was sorting through my shelves today and realized that I had a copy of Jung's Memories, Dreams, Reflections that I had no idea I owned. I love when I subconsciously acquire books! Especially when they've been highly recommended. I think I'll be starting on it soon after all the recs that it's received in these parts.

message 12: by She'Davia (new)

1097655 I LOVE CHICKA CHICKA BOOM BOOM! My second favorite childrens book right behind Good Night Moon, lol

message 11: by Mandy Sue (new)

1410084 Oh yeah, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Put me in the zoo, Skippyjon jones....or did you mean adult books? LOL

message 10: by Kellie (last edited Feb 25, 2009 03:44AM) (new)

842772 I don't reread books unless they are bookclub books. I have reread 2 books "Sullivan's Island" by Dorthea Benton Frank and "Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen. I am so glad I reread Water for Elephants because I enjoyed it so much...AGAIN.

There are just too many books out there to read them 2X.
And, I can only read one book at a time. Those of you that can read more than one at time, I don't know how you do it.

message 9: by ScottK (new)

234101 Oh yeah I have read Great Expectatipons like 20 times ( I am old) Plus The Velveteen Rabbit at least 20.

message 8: by Jenna (new)

1314879 April, I love the Phantom Tollbooth! Such a great book!
As far as books I reread...I read the Harry Potter series every once in awhile, also To Kill a Mockingbird and the Little Prince.

message 7: by She'Davia (new)

1097655 The Catcher in the Rye and Great Expectations, I've read them both at least once a year for the past 3 years.

message 6: by Emilee (new)

934927 I have read Huck Finn and To Kill a Mockingbird mutliple times. If I want a quick read w/a cry I read one tattered angel.

I so need to read Ender's Game I just keep hearing so many good things about it.

message 5: by Logan (new)

70078 I read Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Stranger in a Strange Land, Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow about once a year.

message 4: by ScottK (new)

234101 I used to read LOTR every year but now that I have the movies I don't anymore.
