This is a great read about nerds in contemporary American society. It chronicles the origins of the unique species and its evolution through time and culture. I particularly love the inclusion of literary criticism - drawing on books from Pride and Prejudice to Howards End to Right Ho, Jeeves to Frankenstein. (Nugent must be an English major!) I think I may have some of my students read these chapters to understand that lit crit is not just a nerdy thing - it can be fake nerdy thing too. And yet, I don't want to undermine the beauty of this book. While parts read a bit too disertation-like, I like the personalization of the piece. I like meeting characters like Zack and Jack and Darren. I think perhaps it makes me proud of being a nerd myself.
