202331 I love The Master and Margarita. I would like to learn Russian one day.

2025333 russian literature is great, especially when you read it in Russian. i am from another former Soviet republic(Armenia), and I will recommand to read other Soviet authers, too. there are so many great books of that period.
the Master and Margarita by Bulgakov is one of the best books I have read.

2054698 I just love the matter of fact depiction and concise writting style of Solzhenytsin in A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. I am looking forward to reading other books by him in the future. A Day in the Life was a coffin nail in the Soviet, communist system and Stalinist abuses with human rights violations.

582258 The only Solzhenytsin that I've managed to read so far is A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, but it is one of the best five or so books that I have ever read. I hope to get to some of the others at some point, but I would definitely recommend A Day in the Life to anyone who likes good literature.

914234 True. And all those Russian greats adore Pushkin. I'm not sure its possible to get through a book written in Russian without hearing about Pushkin at least once.

934580 He did write some short stories as well. Perhaps it's just a characteristic Russian style? Tolstoy, Solzhenitsyn et al?

202331 His writing was great, but you had to spend loads of time while reading his works

message 5: by Mike (new)

914234 I'm not entirely sure that's a 1 to 1 correlation, but...

message 4: by Coalbanks (new)

934580 What? Being a woman in a male-dominated society didn't equip you to write in the style of a prisoner of the Gulag?

914234 Beth, you should absolutely read Cancer Ward. It's been on my mind endlessly since I've read it. I haven't yet read A Day in the Life, but I'm looking forward to it as soon as I finish up what I'm reading now.

1329859 His writing was so striking. And inspiring.
I took a history course once and we got the option of writing a creative story based on a style of a particular author. I had just been astounded by A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich and I wrote in that style. I didn't capture him perfectly (how can I, being a white American and him a former Soviet gulag prisoner?) but it earned me an A in the class!
In fact, I might pick up something I haven't read recently by him. Any ideas, favorites?

914234 I know I've harped about Cancer Ward on here a bit already but I just wanted to say that I'm sad to see this brilliant writer go.
