30.8 - Ms. Anderson's task: In the Spirit of the Season
Subtitles will work for this task.If reading a book in translation, you still need to use the original author's name.
For 2, define "genre" however you'd like!
Question! The book I was looking at reading has 3 of the letters of asia in the title and the other letter in the author. Would this count or must the letters all be in the title or all in the author?
chucklesthescot wrote: "Question! The book I was looking at reading has 3 of the letters of asia in the title and the other letter in the author. Would this count or must the letters all be in the title or all in the author?"It has to be either all in the author's name or all in the title. I hope you find something you can use!
It's a deceptively easy task, like an electronic gift whose box says "batteries not included." *GRIN*
Do you realize what happens when the batteries are forgotten? Chaos & Tears! Waaaah!I'm gonna have to switch favorite authors since the unread books that I own don't fit. Like that the task says "ONE" of your fav authors.

Also, you could look for an ebook version--I know not everyone likes to buy books for the challenge, but you may be able to find one, and I know Amazon's kindle program can let you read their ebooks on the computer. Classic novels are often free, too, if you used to enjoy reading those as a child. Finally, the book you enjoyed as a kid doesn't need to be a kid's book--I read Isaac Asimov when I was ten!

Aww, don't cry! I'm sure you have more than one favorite author, and if you look at titles, you can still probably pull the "A-S-I-A" part in even if the author's name doesn't work! *sympathetic pat*
Actually found something when I looked at author name. Gonna have to move Stephanie Draven's Poisoned Kisses from 10.5 to this one :P
Tanja wrote: "Actually found something when I looked at author name. Gonna have to move Stephanie Draven's book from 10.5 to this one :P"Luckily it's still early and shuffling isn't too complicated, right?
It seems I cause you to move books often, though. First Zombies vs. Unicorns, now Draven...when will the madness end? o_o
*giggles*Shifting is part of the book game! I'm likely to do it again. If I have a book that's a 5 pointer that fits a higher point task, I might switch (depending on the difficulty).
I never finish the whole challenge so moving isn't too bad :)
Is it okay if there are more than the specified number of a certain letter in the title or author's name? Say, it has more than 2 As or more than 1 I or S?
Katie wrote: "Is it okay if there are more than the specified number of a certain letter in the title or author's name? Say, it has more than 2 As or more than 1 I or S?"More is fine! As long as it has at least 2 A's, 1 I, and 1 S, you're good :3
Can the letters fall in the subtitle? I was thinking...2-Night World, No. 2: Dark Angel; The Chosen; Soulmate
5-Night World, No. 1: Secret Vampire; Daughters of Darkness; Spellbinder (Night World, #1-3)

When I was 12 I was reading my dad's Stephen King collection so if that is acceptable then I have lots to choose from! Wahey! *rushes off to check all the books I kept from the 80's*!!!

For option 5 can you use a book that would have fit tasks but you already filled that task with other books?
Jennifer N. wrote: "For option 5 can you use a book that would have fit tasks but you already filled that task with other books?"Sure, that works.
Please tell me that I can use Eat,Pray,Love because of the subtitle, which is One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India, and Indonesia
Robin wrote: "Please tell me that I can use Eat,Pray,Love because of the subtitle, which is One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India, and Indonesia"Subtitles work for this task :3
Melissa W wrote: "Would Laura Ingalls Wilder work for #1? And would Great Expectations work for #2?"Both will work, if Wilder is a favorite author of yours and you enjoy classic literature.
Joanna wrote: "Can I use the translator's name, or only the original author?"Only the original author, please, since translators can change.
Subtitles count, but what about How to Breathe Underwater: Stories "Stories"? Can I use that to get the letters or is it not part of the title?
Joanna wrote: "Subtitles count, but what about How to Breathe Underwater: Stories "Stories"? Can I use that to get the letters or is it not part of the title?"I count that as a subtitle, so it definitely works! I hope you like the book!
Hi Ms Anderson-I rolled a 6 and I want to use Shit My Dad Says as my 5 star re-read. I just want to make sure it's ok, the * takes the place of the letter i, but that is definitely the letter intended. I need to use it to spell ASIA so I just wanted to make sure it was ok. Thanks! (on the book cover there is an *)

I'll take it since it's listed with the "i" here on GR!
Quick question:-) Can we have the same author for both books? For example, I love Laura Kinsale, and HR is one of my favorite genres:-)

I just realised I have a copy of Fantastic Mr Fox which I can use for part 3. Now it is 96 pages long so can I add on a Berenstain Bears book or books to put the total over 100 pages? If yes how many of these kids picture books do I need to add for the extra few pages? I want to make sure I do everything right!
chucklesthescot wrote: "I just realised I have a copy of Fantastic Mr Fox which I can use for part 3. She or one of the other mods will give an answer on that, since they might already have a system in place! I'm sorry I have no answer for you right now!
chucklesthescot wrote: "I just realised I have a copy of Fantastic Mr Fox which I can use for part 3. Now it is 96 pages long so can I add on a Berenstain Bears book or books to put the total over 100 pages?..."Picture books cannot be added to complete the required page numbers for a task. If picture books are used for a task, a full 500 pages of picture books must be read.
You could read another Roald Dahl book instead! James and the Giant Peach or Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator would also work for the Asia part, and those are actually long enough you wouldn't need to use the other one.
I'm unemployed, I'm afraid so I have to work with the books that I physically own. I can't justify going out and buying books to read once for a challenge. I don't have library access either. I dreaded rolling number 3 for this reason-I never seem to complete the dice tasks because I always roll the number I don't want!I have 25 books I read as a child that I would use but the 'a-s-i-a' bit and the page restrictions have ruled out pretty much everything!
Thanks for the suggestion though!

If you read any of the classics as a child (ex. "Andersen's Fairy Tales," "Sara Crewe, or What Happened at Miss Minchin's" (later retitled "A Little Princess"), "Grimm's Fairy Tales," and so on), those will work AND they're on the Project Gutenberg site~ So if you don't mind reading on the computer, those are free and will fit the task!
I'd hate for you to miss out because you couldn't get a tangible copy of something. Hopefully one of those will work for you.
Thanks for the links you sent...you've been very kind and helpful to me and I really appreciate it! I'll have a nosey through the options and see what I can find. Also I must say sorry if I sounded like I was moaning about your task-I honestly didn't mean it that way! (I'm having one of those weeks where I'm complaining about EVERYTHING!)

Around the world, this time of year is one for giving gifts. My gift to all of you, my favorite challenge participants, is this task!
Roll a die twice (or until you get two different numbers), and read two books (one for each die) that fit the numbered criteria below. However, there is one catch: the letters A-S-I-A must appear in full (2 As, 1 S, and 1 I), but in any order, in either the title or the author's name.
1: Read a book by one of your favorite authors.
2: Read a book from one of your favorite genres.
3: Reread a book you loved as a kid (challenge rules of at least 100 pages or 500 children's picture book pages still apply).
4: Read a book you've added to your TBR list in the last 6 months.
5: Read a book you've been dying to read, but haven't had a place for in the challenge.
6: Reread a book you gave 5 stars to the first time around.
REQUIRED: Include what numbers you rolled when claiming points.
