JLM ... <3

Anna (SylviaGrant) | 139 comments Oh yes!! it makes my heart flutter within me. <3

Steph Soph wrote: "JLM ... <3"

I second that ;)

Stephanie (Stephanie-Jo) | 111 comments I just got done watching the 2009 version of Emma....I like it so much better then the Gwenyth Paltrow version. This version made the characters come to like so much more and Jonny Lee Miller was definitly a good Mr. Knightley....

Katie (katie_bee) | 6 comments I have yet to see the 2009 version of Emma. I've only seen the Gwenyth Palttrow version and the Kate Beckinsale version, and I have to say I'm not a big fan of the Kate Beckinsale version. I didn't care for the guy that they cast as Mr. Knightley (I prefer Jeremy Northam, I think he did a fantastic job) and it just seemed like they almost made Emma seem very cruel in that version. I don't know, maybe it was just me and I need to sit down and watch it again.

Katie (katie_bee) | 6 comments I do love the 1995 version of Persuasion with Amanda Root and Ciarán Hinds. Has anyone seen the more recent 2007 version? I heard that they changed bits and pieces of the story.

Well I agree about Emma. But on a second viewing my opinion improved, but may favourites are Paltrow and 2009 :) watch the 09 one!! :D
And Persuasion. Well, I think it is great and it is my fav one. And the changes you refer to, well there are some which are like how it was changed on the 95 one (and I think they were scenes which was originally on the first cut of Persuasion before she edited it) but also there is a change in that in this version, Wentworth has retired from the army, meaning the ending a different (but I prefer it, knowing he won't be involved in another war)
So it is not as altered as say... MP07 which is terribly different to the book as you can't condense that book into an hour and a half!!
So I recommend you watch that also! :)

Cari (carinajq) | 42 comments My fave adaptions are the 1995 P&P and 1995 S&S. :)
I also like NA, the 2007 version. and MP, 1999.
I watched the 1996 version of Emma and I really didn't like it.
[I seem to always end up watching the older versions! I need to check out the newer ones. :P]

Katie--the 95 version of Persuasion is perfect, imho. I didn't like the new one nearly as much.

S&S - 1995 and 2008*
Emma - 1996 (Beckinsale) 1996* (Paltrow) 2009 *
Persuasion - 1995 and 2007*

MP - 1983* and 2007, probs 1999 I haven't seen that yet.

Stephanie (Stephanie-Jo) | 111 comments I just watched the 2008 BBC version of Persuasion and loved it. I tried to watch a 1987 version of Northanger Abbey and had to turn it off. I am definitly going to start looking for other versions to watch.

I am glad you liked it!! I loved that version to!! I have yet to watch the 1986 NA...

Stephanie (Stephanie-Jo) | 111 comments And to hear the letter read aloud at then end of the movie...OMG! It was so well done. Now I want to go back and read the book again already. But need to finish Emma, P&P, and S&S first, then I can go back and read again if I want to.

YES!!!!! I love the ending.... I like that it finished with him retiring, so there is no threat of war to call him back <3
I want to read it again...

Stephanie (Stephanie-Jo) | 111 comments Yes and the gift he gave her for the wedding was definitly appropriate!

Soph | 2525 comments Mod
So appropriate!!!!!!!!!!!! *sigh* ...
And isn't Rupert Penry-Jones really handsome?

Stephanie (Stephanie-Jo) | 111 comments Yes he most definitly is! Her sister was annoying and conniving. She really annoyed me. I was also surprised that noone put together that Ann and Capt Wentworth knew each other.

Ikr!! The beginning was sad. You could see how he hated her... And you could see how upset he was... Aww!!!
I love the movie!!!! :D

When he helps her into the carriage!!!

Stephanie (Stephanie-Jo) | 111 comments Yep! Anytime they were in the room together, I could feel the tension raise along with the temperature. Just discovered I have to find the 1997 version of Jane Eyre because he plays River St. John....

Soph | 2525 comments Mod
I totally agree!!! They were great together!!! But that scene when it is raining, and then their intense conversation is interrupted by the abominable Elliot!! Shut up about 'providential'!!!!
Haha really!
Love the new photo!!!!! Looks like a conversation between Darcy and Wentworth now ;)

Stephanie (Stephanie-Jo) | 111 comments Yes it does! I loved that scene in the movie too. Yeah Charles Elliot is about as big of an idiot as his wife.

Asia | 30 comments I know that its not a movie, but I just finished to watch the series "Lost in Austen" and I loved it, even if its not exactly the adaptation of the story, its more the use of it. Anyways if you saw it, did you like it?

message 32: by Soph, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Soph | 2525 comments Mod
It's ok. It started ok and then went a bit too crazy for me!! But, it was done well, I'll admit that!! What did you think of the changes? Such as Wickham and Georgiana etc?

message 33: by Asia (last edited Aug 11, 2012 08:48AM) (new)

Asia | 30 comments I loved the change made for Wickham, though Georgiana's relationship with her brother I felt was..weird. She's afraid of him? I don't know. He always seemed to me as the perfect brother like in the series with Colin Firth. But altogether was fine. Instead I hated Mr. Collins in this version. Eww.. just disgusting. I think it was too modernized as a whole. All the characters are different from what we are used to. But I have to admit I still loved the Mr. Darcy, and laughed so hard to Amanda's request to imitate Colin Firth "white wet shirt" scene. The ending was too good to be realistic, but I still liked it.

Soph | 2525 comments Mod
yes it was funny when she did that, and agree about the ending!

Anne (Cinderella16) | 115 comments I've seen both the newer BBC version of Persuasion(which I absolutly hated!!! The girl that played Anne was awful!) and I've also seen the version with...oh no! I forgot her name! Help me please! It's an older version and has the guy who plays in... well, lots of things, but lately he played the military dude that you couldn't stand in Race to Witch Mountain. Arg! This is driving me nuts. Either way, I loved that version. I really liked the actress that played Anne. (although Wentworth wasn't very good looking in it.)

Are you talking about Ciaran Hinds and Amanda Root? I liked the latest Persuasion. Wentworth was great!! Agree about the othe Wentworth though...

message 37: by Anne (last edited Aug 14, 2012 01:13PM) (new)

Anne (Cinderella16) | 115 comments Yes, I think that's the one. I liked that version. I can't remember what I thought about Wentworth in the new one(although he's really nice looking ;)(I like you're picture btw) I think I was just too caught up in the girl's bad acting.

message 38: by Soph, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Soph | 2525 comments Mod
Yes I wish they cast Anne better otherwise it was a great one I thought. Well IMO Wentworth was great in that one, in looks and acting ;)

Stephanie (Stephanie-Jo) | 111 comments Just watched the 2007 BBC version of Sense & Sensibility. I must say that I liked this version better then the one with Kate Winslet. The copy that I got also has Miss Austen Regrets which I need to finish. Now to read the book again.

message 40: by Soph, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Soph | 2525 comments Mod
I preferred that version as well.
What was it that you liked better?

Stephanie (Stephanie-Jo) | 111 comments I am not sure, I think it was the actress that played Elinor and Marianne. I never really like Kate Winslet so I am sure that was part of it. An the young man who played Edward Ferrars was a little believable. The actor who played Willoughby kind of reminded me of Frank Churchill from Emma.

I loved the performances of the 4 main characters. :) and in all cases except Brandon, I thought the performances were all better (both Brandon's were good!)

Sarah Smith (SarahLouiseSmith) I have most adaptations on DVD and most of them are pretty good. Whenever I'm ill I put the 1995 BBC P&P on and just watch each episode back to back!
The 2005 version with Keira Knightly is good, but there are so many odd things they changed that it annoys me a little (like why didn't Elizabeth tell Jane that Mr. Darcy had proposed? - it changes their relationship, gives the viewer the impression they're not as close). But it's still worth seeing.
Love the BBC S&S - Dan Stevens as Edward - lovely :)
Persuasion - why does Anne Elliot keep looking at the camera? That's a bit odd, but otherwise I liked that too... and I love walking down the street it was filmed in, in Bath :)
Better stop there before I write an essay :)

I agree with everything you said!! Completely!

I wanted Lizzy to speak to Jane about it!!
Dan was great! And Brandon (David Morissey)

And I found that as well about the Anne thing! Haha but Wentworth was SOOO dreamy in that!!

Sarah Smith (SarahLouiseSmith) Yes - Wentworth was something wonderful! :)

Irene | 271 comments It seems that Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey are the most difficult novels to put on the screen...
I'm still searching for the 1983 version of Mansfield Park, but the 1999 and the 2007 don't satisfy me completely.
For what concerns Northanger Abbey, I've only watched the 2007 movie. Do you know other adaptations?

I agree though the 07 wasn't bad. I liked it.
Um. NA there is a 1986 Ish one I think. I haven't seen it yet. With Katherine Schslinger. (not sure of the spelling)

I love that film! It's very good! Shame it couldn't have been longer. But it kept the spirit and was overall a great film, based on P&P ;)

Marren | 741 comments I am on a mission to watch all adaptions based on Jane Austen novels. I plan to watch them after I reread each novel. If I cannot watch them after each novel, I will just watch them when I can but I am determine :D
