valee What do you think of them?

message 2: by valee (new)

valee Emma was a bit of a brat sometimes but she always meant well and at least realized she was wrong once in a while.

Knightley was so freaking sexy, lol. I loved how he always told Emma what she needed to hear and how he helped her realize what was the right thing to do. And when he danced with Harriet just because she was all alone at the dance, so sweet.

His quote to Emma when he declares her his love was one of the bests. I loved it.

Katherine | 41 comments I love them as well. It took her awhile to realize her feeling but he was very patient and caring.

Love them as a couple!
Knightley was always constant and just waited for Emma. There conversations are great and they are perfect for each other. The proposal is great and it is amazing that he goes to love with her so he can marry her - so gallant :)

Steph Agree Soph

Emma is a bit of a brat but because she has been very fortunate and really hasn't had to ever suffer so she comes across as such but she is really harmless and quite sheltered. She feels for everyone but knows her station, means well but needs to learn how to be discrete in her fortunes.

I love how Knightly sees her distress whenever she is experiencing unpleasant family conversation which will upset her father or as you mentioned Lady Vale when Harriet was feeling so low because not one gentleman asked her to dance or even when she was pondering her lack of travel and was feeling sorry for herself.

George knows exactly what Emma needs even before she knows herself. He has tutored and taught her so much as she grew up helping to create this perfect being.

Emma is perfect for George because no one challenges him as she and she offers him equal conversation. The dance that they shared was a pivotal moment when she started to realize her feelings and he too saw her for the first time which made it somewhat difficult for him to look at her. So romantic!

I love how he simply decides because she is so horribly upset about leaving her father when they marry that he will move to her home....it was so simple for him because he loves her that much

They are the best <3

agree :)

message 7: by Anna (new)

Anna (SylviaGrant) | 139 comments Emma Woodhouse I would agree was a rather spoiled young lady to begin with but her father didn't really help by the way he constantly worried about her making sure that nothing bad ever happened to her..

Oh yes! The Knightley Family is just the most lovable family that Ms. Austen has ever written and brought about especially Mr. Knightley himself.

The best scene I would have to say was when he offered to dance with Harriet because it was so much like him to do such a simple act of charity and love for her.

I could rave and rant about Mr. Knightley, Emma, Mr. Elton, Mrs. Knightley (Isabella, Emma's sister), Mr. Knightley the second (his brother), FRANK CHURCHILL, Mr. Weston, Mrs. Anne Taylor Weston and the others!! but I don't want to rave about them until everyone has finished their options on this perfect couple!

Noirfifre | 764 comments I suspect I am the only one who thinks that Mr. Knightley should not care for Emma. Emma made me go urghhh! for mingling in people's heart and her 'superior manners' drove me crazy.

Haha. One of the few yes. I think that is why I liked Emma and I think why Knightley liked her too!

Don't worry you aren't alone.Emma makes me want to throw the book.

message 11: by Irene (new)

Irene | 271 comments Emma and Mr Knigtley are a sort of worse Elizabeth and better Mr Darcy. I don't know if you understand what I mean.

Emma is clever and witty but she misjudge others, their intentions and misuse her cleverness. Mr Knigtley himself, in chapter 8, tells Emma: "Better be without sense, than misapply it as you do".

Mr Knightley is a gentleman as Mr Darcy is, but he is not so proud and self-controlled. I know, I know... Mr Knightley fells in love with Emma that is his equal in status and this makes things easier for him. However I don't think he is so cryptic as Mr Darcy is.

Then why a better Mr Darcy would fell in love with a worse Elizabeth? Well... we may as well ask why Colonel Brandon fells in love with Marianne that not only ignores him but makes sport of him with Willoughby.
I believe Mr Knightley knows Emma better that all of us, because he have known her all his life and he can see her merits and qualities. Probably he knows her better than Jane Austen herself and the author didn't have any choice in bringing them together... it was just fate. :P

Haha interesting theory there Irene! (great English there btw!)

It is an interesting point actually, and there is some truth there i think!

Love your comment at the end - I think they were meant to be together. This was foreshadowed by Isabella and John getting together. They had known each other for years, just like Emma and George!

message 13: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Louise Smith (SarahLouiseSmith) I don't much like Emma at the beginning of the book but she grows on me. I think she's young and has some bad ideas (like we all do at that age!) but by the end she's matured and realised the error of her ways...

As do we all, as 'normal' people... we all have faults and hopefully in time we become 'better' :)

Exactly, that's what I like about her heroines. They all have faults and so they are far more relatable and more real/human :)

♥Caro♥ (caroheartsbooks) | 272 comments thats true although idk emma just annoyed me...but ya know thats just me

message 21: by Becca (new)

Becca | 561 comments Emma did really annoy me - usually a heroine's faults wouldn't annoy me so much, except that I (and probably others) could see exactly how much her faults were hurting other people and negatively affecting their lives.

Anyway, I really liked Emma and Knightley together. Honestly, I don't mind the age difference at all, but I do find it a little creepy when they talk so openly about how Knightley had held Emma when she was a baby. (Or was that just in the movie version I saw???) In any case, the age difference doesn't bother me.

It's funny how Knightley and Emma seem like a perfect match and yet sometimes so different, so improbable! But I guess of anyone Knightley would know her best, and vice versa - they can both be very stubborn people though, which is probably why they took so long to get together. I enjoy Knightley's brutal honesty, but I think my favorite scene is where Knightley gets angry at Elton and goes to dance with Harriet. My heart did a little melt-fest when I saw that in the movie.

The age difference is mentioned in the book but towards the beginning. I never understand why they made it part of the proposal... it wasn't right to put it at that point...

Emmma and Knightley can at times be very arugmentative and clash badly, as you say, but also at others they seem perfect for each other and so great together! Emma needs Knightley and after seeing him most days for years I think she would find it hard without him. Well, that is what happens haha. When it looks like Harriet might be keen on him and Knightey as well, 'It darted through her, with the speed of an arrow, that Mr. Knightley must marry no one but herself!'

message 23: by Becca (new)

Becca | 561 comments Yeah, it was just odd as part of the proposal...

:D Emma seems selfish like that, but with someone like Knightley who can blame her? And though Harriet did improve, she wouldn't have been right for Knightley - as a friend, yes, as a wife? No.

Harriet is for Robert Martin and only Robert Martin!

message 25: by Noirfifre (new)

Noirfifre | 764 comments I agree and I just stamped down my gavel with some much force.

*gosh I just got some passionate* haha

message 26: by Becca (new)

Becca | 561 comments It was a bit silly how Harriet got proposed to at the beginning, we had to go through all this fuss and she ended up married to Robert anyway. I mean, seriously, Emma - couldn't you have spared us about 200 pages? :D Still, it was obvious Robert Martin was right for Harriet, though I wish he had more character development.
