152399 I've been hearing a lot of good things about Cloud Atlas, by David Mitchell. I haven't read it, but I trust my sources.

Also, in terms of creative use of language, if you haven't read The Tin Drum, by Gunter Grass, give it a go.

In terms of precision and grace, I don't think you can top James Joyce.

As for more contemporary work, I am a fanatical devote of Jesus' Son, by Dennis Johnson.

There's hundreds of choices!

171964 I'll always plug for Kathy Acker, author of such works as Don Quixote and My Mother: A Demonology.

141556 Toni Morrison. Lyrical language meets plot head on.

Nophoto-f-25x33 How about the Winged Seed: A Remembrance by Li Young Lee? It's a memoir that's written like a poem.

135263 I'd add Sarah Van Arsdale to the list. Her book Toward Amnesia is clearly the novel of a trained poet -- there's so much attention to every word, and the movement of the book is very quiet, contemplative.

147689 I'm looking for some fiction that might be of particular interest to poets, in terms of writing styles, structure, etc. Any suggestions?
