I couldn't agree more! Chelsea Cain is definitely un-put-down-able. In a sick a twisted sort of way :)

Nophoto-f-25x33 I agree, a very tricky task: (and I would agree with a lot of books already posted) so I'm going to add:

1 Mrs. Mike
2 Running with Scissors
3 Moment in Peking
4 The White Tiger
5 What is the What
6 Angela's Ashes
7 The Bonfire of the Vanities
8 Ahab's Wife or The Star Gazer
9 The Secret Garden
10 Youth in Revolt
11 Seeing Calvin Coolidge in a Dream
12 Crazy in Alabama
13 Simon Lazarus

So many book lists ~ I love it. Here are my thirteen un-put-down-able books:

1. A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving
2. The Girls by Lori Lansens
3. The Mysteries of Pittsburgh A Novel by Michael Chabon
4. A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry
5. My Antonia by Willa Cather
6. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
7. Peony in Love by Lisa See
8. Bel Canto by Ann Patchett
9. Motherless Brooklyn by Jonathan Lethem
10. March by Geraldine Brooks
11. Straight Man A Novel by Richard Russo
12. Cereus Blooms at Night A Novel by Shani Mootoo
13. Cloudstreet A Novel by Tim Winton

This was a tricky task!! I went with mostly contemporary novels that I have read in the past two years. My Antonia is the exception to the contemporary parameters I imposed on myself, but I adored it so much when we did it at my F2F book group last year, so I had to include it here. The novel The Kite Runner came to mind immediately when I started reading this thread, but I did have to put it down several times over two days to re-group emotionally.

75360 These aren't necessarily my favorites (some are), but...
1.) Harry Potter (ALL of them)
2.) Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden
3.) The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini (sp?)
4.) Matilda by Roald Dahl
5.) A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly
6.) The Hobbit by Tolkien
7.) Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom
And I'll name some others when I can think of them :)

message 177: by Lisa (new)

1151972 I love Chelsea Cain's book, and I don't read King. (King gives me nightmares.) The 3rd book Evil at Heart is out September 1. I can't wait!

message 176: by Amy (new)

2505514 OK...for you Stephen King fans out there. I have found Chelsea Cain's series un-put-doneable. Starts with Heartsick, then Sweetheart, and I think there may be a third. I've read the first two. They don't have the plot intricacy or depth of Stephen King, but for a horror/thriller ride they are good. They are about a female serial killer and the cop that tries to bring her to "justice" (not a spoiler...you get this from the first chapter)and their relationship. Pretty horrific, but fascinating, if you enjoy the genre.

OK, yes, I cannot sit without something to read. I will read a 1983 Readers Digest in a Doctors waiting room, if that's all there is. Which is one of the reasons I got myself a Kindle--so I will never again be without something to read.

2026178 I've seen The Historian mentioned several times. I had a hard time with this book. While I did finish it, it was an effort and took forever.

message 154: by Claire (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 'Unputdownable' for me now means I finish it in 1-2 weeks, occasionally over a weekend versus when I was at school and university where I could read a long book in a day or two... but the ones of the list are the ones I get absorbed in for as long as I can!

So my list is:

The Shadow of the Wind
The Book Thief
The Bronze Horseman
All of the Harry Potter ones - I was up against a deadline for all of them. For Order of the Phoenix I was travelling in Europe and I couldn't concentrate on the trip properly until I finished!!
Anna Karenina - Funny one to put as unputdownable I know - and I did actually put it down for about 9 months after the first 100 pages. Then I picked it back up and finished it in less than a week.
The Historian
Anybody Out There?
When you wake and find me gone
Power of One
Pride and Prejudice
Crime and Punishment
The Great Gatsby
Going Solo - one of my childhood favourites - I remember how engrossed I was by this book, and have reread it many times over the years, along with most of the other Roald Dahl books.

message 153: by Stef (new)

and last but not least I have to mention Raymond Khoury in general.
