Great article on Reader's Block: http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2008/jul...Unfortunately, it's a little long... :P
my tips:1. rediscover the joys of children's and adolescent literature. reread your old favourites, and browse for new ones.
2. consider reading more than one book at a time, so there's always something on hand to suit your reading mood.
3. start using the public library again! access to all those free books = minimum investment, maximum returns.
4. read whatever catches your fancy. don't worry about hype, bestsellers, respected authors, etc.
5. judge books by their covers! if the design catches your attention, read the blurb. it's a great way to discover new books.
So the 50-page rule worked pretty well for a book aimed at 16-year-old girls.
Have struggled with it so far on my current book, though -- AS Byatt's "Possession" won the Booker Prize in 1990, and I'm guessing they don't give that out to easy reads :P
