Becky (BeckyETB) | 2980 comments It's almost that time again... Here's the new HF Challenge task list. I hope you like it. :)

The challenge will begin on June 1, 2010. Please be sure to read the challenge rules - I made a few changes.

RULES:
1) Books must be Historical Fiction unless otherwise specified in the task.

2) Books must be at least 200 pages long.

3) Books less than 1/2 finished may be counted for the challenge at the beginning, but ALL books must be completed and points recorded by 11:59p EST on August 31, 2010 for points to be counted as completed for the task.

4) Scoring: Task categories are assigned a point value, and points are awarded when all parts of the task are completed. Partial points will NOT be awarded for partially completed tasks. You will also receive bonus points based on the length of each book (even for multiple book tasks), as follows:
200 to 300 pages = 2 bonus points
301 to 500 pages = 4 bonus points
501 to 750 pages = 6 bonus points
751 to 1,000 pages = 8 bonus points
1,000+ = 10 bonus points
If you fail to record the length of the book, you will still be awarded the task points, but will NOT receive bonus points. (Sorry, but I'm not going to hunt you down for them!)
As this challenge contains both HF and other genre books, you will receive 1 additional bonus point for every HF book read. Please be sure to list that the book is HF to make sure that the additional points are counted.

Stephanie (PremiumCrouton) If I decide to partake in this challenge, but didn't do challenge #2 (I didn't even know goodreads existed until a couple weeks ago), what do you suggest I do for "15.6 Read a HF book that you wanted to read for HF Challenge #2 but didn't get to"?

ToniS | 194 comments Yay! New challenge! OK, other participants, what is the best book you read in 2009?

Mine was The Little Stranger.

You could just choose a task that you think you would've wanted to complete. :)

message 5: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (BeckyETB) | 2980 comments Oh man, Toni... I just read the first line of the description of "The Little Stranger" and I wanna read it like THIS SECOND. :D

Stephanie (PremiumCrouton) Mmmm then I will probably do the library one =)

message 7: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (BeckyETB) | 2980 comments Sounds good to me. :)

I'll edit the task to add that as well. Thanks for bringing that up, Stephanie! ;)

message 8: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (BeckyETB) | 2980 comments Toni, don't forget to send me your bonus/extra credit task... No rush, I just want to make sure you're thinking about it. :P

ToniS | 194 comments I'm thinking about it. I have to decide whether I want to be challenging or popular....

Jayme(the ghost reader) (JaymeILtheghostreader) | 2883 comments My favorite one was Katherine.

Jayme(the ghost reader) (JaymeILtheghostreader) | 2883 comments When do you need my task, Becky?

message 12: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (BeckyETB) | 2980 comments Hehehe... I know the feeling.

message 13: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (BeckyETB) | 2980 comments Jayme wrote: "When do you need my task, Becky?"

Whenever you've decided is fine. If you're ready now, go ahead and post it. :)

Jayme(the ghost reader) (JaymeILtheghostreader) | 2883 comments well, my favorite genre is Fantasy so Read a book where it takes place in a magical land or a fantasy/alternate history

message 15: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (BeckyETB) | 2980 comments Ok, got it. Thanks!

message 16: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (BeckyETB) | 2980 comments I'll also list everyone's favorites in the first post so that they are easy to find. :)

ToniS | 194 comments You didn't post yours, Becky! What was your fave of 2009?

message 18: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (BeckyETB) | 2980 comments I haven't decided yet!!

message 19: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (BeckyETB) | 2980 comments OK I posted mine... I chose The Gun Seller by Hugh Laurie. It's technically on my 2010 list, but I'd read 1/2 of it in 2009 so I'm counting it. ;) I'm nothing if not flexible! Hehehe...

Jeane | 489 comments I am struggling for my favourite read in 2009 between The library of shadows, the girl with the dragon tattoo and the fire.....

I will go for The Fireby Katherine neville. It was the book that made me get up in the middle of the night to read on, the book that made it difficult to concentrate at work and the one that was in my head all the time!

Evelina A. (Amerigo) | 221 comments Wow! This challenge looks great! I think I might give it a try.

LemonLinda (lwilliamson42353) | 795 comments I have too many reading commitments right now to really get involved with this challenge, but I will monitor and most likely do one in the future. If not, the fall, then definitely in 2011. Right now I can slip in a couple of extra books each month, but not beyond that.

message 23: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (BeckyETB) | 2980 comments Linda, you can participate as much or as little as you want. There's no obligation to complete the challenge. Even if you only read one or two books, I'd love it if you joined. :)

Thanks Jeane!

OK - then I can probably handle that.

Jamie | 75 comments I'm definitely going to be joining you for this challenge - it looks great!

For the list, my favorite book read in 2009 was A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly.

I'm off to start my reading list...

Jayme(the ghost reader) (JaymeILtheghostreader) | 2883 comments I am in three book challenges and I just fit the books in where I can.

Maude | 993 comments Becky, re 20.2, just want to verify this challenge could be a non-fiction book?

message 30: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (BeckyETB) | 2980 comments Maude wrote: "Becky, re 20.2, just want to verify this challenge could be a non-fiction book?"

Yes. Any genre. :)

Great! :)

LemonLinda (lwilliamson42353) | 795 comments My favorite for 2009:

That is tough - I have several - but I will go with Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay. It really introduced to me a part of WWII history that I had been unaware of and I loved the connection across the decades to uncover what had happened to Sarah and her family.

Felina | 631 comments Squeeee!! She posted it early! *prints off the list and runs to rummage in her piles of books*

Felina | 631 comments My favorite from 2009 was The Book Thief

Evelina A. (Amerigo) | 221 comments I'm making my list and checking it twice!

Regarding 20.7, can I read more than one book from the countries listed, or do I choose only 1 country from the list?

Felina | 631 comments Wait for the 10.1 we have to read the first one we haven't read? So pretty much everybody is reading The Little Stranger then?

Felina | 631 comments Sweet task Jayme. ;)

Felina | 631 comments Because I suck, would anybody be so kind as to make a short list of events or people that lived/occurred before 100 AD.

Stephanie (PremiumCrouton) Ditto please...I actually plan to look at the lists of others when they start appearing. I am having a hard time thinking of them..and I have only a few on hand.. One I cant even decide where it would go best All the Queen's Players. I already have a romance one chosen Outlander, which I have started but I am no where near the middle of it (its a horribly slow read for me). So I am trying to decide the next best place for queens player, I think it could go into political upheaval...and maybe art (apparently shes an artist) or maybe even mystery cuz shes supposed to spy. Blegh.

Stephanie (PremiumCrouton) Oh and I would say my favorite read from 2009 was The Lovely Bones

Becky (BeckyETB) | 2980 comments Felina wrote: "Wait for the 10.1 we have to read the first one we haven't read? So pretty much everybody is reading The Little Stranger then?"

Umm... No. This is working out a little differently than I'd planned. I'd imagined that each person would choose someone to ask and that person would tell the asker what their favorite was, and the asker would have to read the first one they hadn't already read.

But I like the list - I'll update the task so that it reads choose one that you haven't already read and read it.:)

ToniS | 194 comments OK, my challenge is going to be, read the first book in a HF saga.

You'd choose one. You can read more than one of course, but points will only be awarded for one.

Becky (BeckyETB) | 2980 comments ToniS wrote: "OK, my challenge is going to be, read the first book in a HF saga."

OK great. :)

Edit: Actually, let me clarify, because some sagas can be contained in one book. Would a series work too?

Laura (apenandzen) | 104 comments Wow Becky, awesome list! I'm not really an HF lover, but this one is tempting.....

Stephanie (PremiumCrouton) Laura wrote: "Wow Becky, awesome list! I'm not really an HF lover, but this one is tempting....."

I like this one because it allows more than just HF

Laura (apenandzen) | 104 comments Maybe that's what's drawing me in...
