Omg I so want this book. Im a plot writer I always come u with what I want them to be doing first but I feel it makes my characters weak.
I'm already finding it helpful and I've only had it a day. Do you know anything about Enneagrams? There's lots of free info on the internet. Free tests, too.

Yes we used work sheets and character interviews in my Creative Writing class that was so long ago and I find that they don't help me as well as they used to.
Amanda, I've never read China Mieville, but that sounds like something I'd enjoy. I hope it's as good as it sounds!
He's one of my top 3 fav authors ever! He's an amazingly talented storyteller. I love his books! i'm ordering Kraken from amazon.uk because it doesn't come out in the US til the end of June or something and i just can't wait that long.If u want to try one of his books, i'd recommend u start with Perdido Street Station, it's the first of three books he wrote set in the world of bas-lag.
His most recent book is The City & The City but it's really not representative of the majority of his work. It's so completely different from his other stuff. I've heard he wrote it for his mother shortly before she died and she loved crime fiction. I loved it but not as much as any of his other books
I haven't been getting many books form trading or buying but mostly from the library. New from trade:
A Game of Thrones
The Court of Air-Stephen Hunt
From library:
Magic Study -Maria V Snyder( adult fantasy/alternate world this is the second book in the study series the first one is Poison Study Ixia is a place ruled by a Military dictator they call the commander.)
Fragile Eternity- Malissa Marr (3rd Wicked Lovely Book)
Impossible- Nancy Werlin
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Beautiful Creatures
Deadly Little Lies (2nd book in the Touch series,1rst book deadly little secrets)
The Otherworldlies (sounded different)
I recently got The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay and The Grand Ellipse(not sure why i got this 2nd one, not usually my type-think i was sucked in by the cover, but maybe it'll surprise me) and The Return of the Black Company which includes books (i think) 7 and 8 of a series i started a long time ago and hadn't been able to finish because one of them was out of print. They finally reprinted it in this edition so i can't wait to read the last 3 books in this series. Finally!
Sounds really good now I try to look for books that I wouldn't normally read. I usually read YA because im very impatient and YA usually jumps right into the story giving you the back ground as you go along instead of adult which usually builds up to the action starting slow and moving on forward. If a book doesn't get me in the first 3 chaps I will not read it lol. Im looking forward to more steampunk and Bizzaro though :)
I read a lot of YA at ur age too although i think there's many good adult books that get right into the action, but i see what u mean.
Yes The Study Trilogy by Maria V Snyder is actually Adult Fantasy but sometimes you find it in Romance or YA because of its cross over potential she does a good job of connecting with different age groups. I love her play on magic too so much better and more mature than Middle Grades Harry Potter. Magic Study is the second book and I love there little magic school and what not it wasnt to much of that in the first book Poison study though. When I was younger I actually would not touch YA I read alot of Adult AA but there arnt alot of those now days that dont repeat the same story that Im not trying to hear. There seems to be no imagination in those and you barely come across a AA author that can write Fantasy or Scifi. L.A Banks and Octavia Butler being the only two that come to mind.
I still find that most of the time I can still relate to the characters although they are mostly missing the reality of different races or they represent the races really wrong. Like I couldnt finish Dead Until Dark because when the Author would talk about Sookie or someone she was friends with the description would be so clear and nice but if there was a person of color it seemed the description was dismissive like 'she was a black girl' and thats it lol. When I read that I just couldn't get into the book anymore I love books where race isnt important they dont have to keep saying throughout the book this person is black or this person is white or this person is Asian and listing things they think that whole race must do.Ps. this is so not the right form for this convo lol but im bored. :(
I think that is totally appropriate for this forum, just as other criticism of style or content.I'm currently reading an older book (not among the genre of this forum) in which I keep seeing traces of hints that the central character is maybe black. I keep asking myself why it matters.
It's aggravating to me that I still carry around this reflexive mind-set that I basically always visualize the central character as anglo just because I am. Just about the time I think I don't have prejudices, I find out something new and unflattering about myself.
Oh, well, something to work on until I'm just totally perfect, I guess.
(Instead of mostly perfect, as I am now!)
yeah i think its fine for the topic too and i never pay to much attention to topics anyway. I'm always going off topic. I know what u mean with books like that. I've been fortunate to not have read a book with that problem in a long time. What is the book ur reading Mike?
There is a book YA that came out 2008/2009 idk I havent read it and its called Liar a lot of people bloggers and readers boycotted the book because the main character was supposed to be black but the character on the front cover wasn't. The Author herself had nothing to do with the cover but I do believe the publishers ended up pulling that cover off the shelves the new cover the girl still isnt as she is described in the book but I guess you could say a little closer.Because of the Genre of books I prefer I usually view my characters in my mind as White even if the author doesn't say that character is white.
Main thing is I love a good book. Just every now and then I come across a Author that relies to much on race in their books and I just get totally turned off by that author.

It's YA thing titled "The Red Pyramid" by Rick Riordan that was cheap on Amazon for the Kindle. Okay so far.

I was thinking about reading that.I love Egyptian Mythology. Actually I love Mythology all together. Its so interesting.
Chakara,You mentioned Octavia Butler and LA Banks. Have you read Samuel R. Delany Babel-17? This is one of his more straightforward books. It won all sorts of awards when it was poblished in the early '60s.Dhalgren may be a bizarro book, it sure is weird! And good!
Also look for the science fiction of Steven Barnes and the horror of Tananarive Due Blood Brothers*, Charisma *My Soul to Keep*The Between*Tananarive Due
Also look for this wonderful anthology! Dark Matter: A Century of Speculative Fiction from the African Diaspora.
I've read several of Larbalestier's Magic or Madness books, but not Liar. Yet. The point is, as I remember it, her first person narrator was supposed to be an unreliable narrator, but according to the wrong book jacket she even lied about her color?
Well, no, her publisher thought more books would sell with a white face on the cover... Not when the writer forced them to pulp the whole run with a white girl on the cover, made them look bad, and got attention to her book.

Thanx for the Recs Ill check them out and see if its something I would like.I have absolutely no problem with their being any race on a cover but I do understand peoples frustration with them sometimes. The book The Red Pyramid is about two kids that are of mixed races and I saw a review that said the book was great but if it becomes a movie and the children arn't of a mixture of races (which idk how you can tell really everyone is something different) that they should get the publishers lol. I really love books that dont rely much on race or create their own races . I feel like race isnt real its something that we have created and dealt with for so long that we believe that its everything. (if that makes sense).I don't even really like to read books that deal with black people who are are all about being this way and that way and using slang.
That's why I enjoy Eric Jerome Dickey Gideon series he is just a mixture of all races and nationalities he doesn't even know what he is actually and because of that I think he can relate better to everyone than some other African American characters.
Honestly I tried to read one Octavia butler book and it kinda bored me. I do want to give her another try though I think the book was called Fledgling.
Fledgling was Butler's last book. I loved it, but by then I'd read all of her books and I knew what to expect from her. My favorites, that don't have Fledgeling's slow start are Wild Seed and Kindred. Also her Parable of the Sower is pretty amazing.

Back to Hauling ! :) I went to the library today even though I shouldnt have with everything that I have going on right now. Possible new job, school starting and about 10 other library books to read before these.Any who they are :

Im really excited about Fever Crumb! :)Fever Crumb is a girl who has been adopted and raised by Dr. Crumb, a member of the order of Engineers, where she serves as apprentice. In a time and place where women are not seen as reasonable creatures, Fever is an anomaly, the only female to serve in the order. Soon though, she must say goodbye to Dr. Crumb-nearly the only person she's ever known-to assist archeologist Kit Solent on a top-secret project. As her work begins, Fever is plagued by memories that are not her own and Kit seems to have a particular interest in finding out what they are. Fever has also been singled out by city-dwellers who declare her part Scriven. The Scriveners, not human, ruled the city some years ago but were hunted down and killed in a victorious uprising by the people. If there are any remaining Scriven, they are to be eliminated. All Fever knows is what she's been told: that she is an orphan. Is Fever a Scriven? Whose memories does she hold? Is the mystery of Fever, adopted daughter of Dr. Crumb, the key to the secret that lies at the heart of London? Haunting, arresting, and astonishingly original, Fever Crumb will delight and surprise readers at every fast-paced, breathless turn.
Philip Reeve is the bestselling author of the Mortal Engines quartet and the highly acclaimed Here Lies Arthur. He lives in Dartmoor, England with his wife and son.

She's very accessible, and the #1 authority on the Greek gods and Greek mythology. Morgan, our daughter read her Edith Hamilton book so many times it was in tatters.
