message 39: by Naomi (last edited Jun 23, 2009 06:21PM) (new)

803318 I'm sorry about your friends ruining it for you. I don't think it's a waste, but it's not the best book ever.
You should totally go back and finish those series. They're some of my favorite.
Some other series I recommend are The Goose Girl books. Often called the Books of Bayern, and any other books by Shannon Hale. Also the Dragon Slippers books, and any other books by Jessica Day George. (Those are my two favorite authors.) Also the Fablehaven series and any other books by Brandon Mull, though his books are more for 4-6 graders, but I still enjoy them. xD

2324085 Ooh ok a lot of people have said Twilight is a waste, and all my friends are addicted so i know every little secret of the flippin book. its kinda ruined for me. my mom is going to let me read harry potter 1 and 2, but after that she is not sure about it yet. i have read ember, started eragon and i want to finish, uglies 1 and almost finished 2 but i need to continue the series, and i want to read the inkheart series. i read the first book of leven thumps/

message 37: by Naomi (new)

803318 let see, I can see The City of Ember, Uglies, Gathering Blue, The Lottery, The Most Dangerous Game, and The Truman Show. though I can't see Twilight at all.
My friend said Graceling was really bad, and from what she told me, I can't relate it at all to The Hunger Games.
Hey, THE Ninja etc. Don't disappointed by not being able to read Twilight. It's good, but way overrated; Tell your mom to let you read Harry Potter Boxset Books 1-7. though I understand, my mom wouldn't let me read book 4 and above for awhile; Read the Eragon, Eldest & Brisingr cycle; The Uglies, The Collector's Set Uglies, Pretties, Specials, Extras series is pretty good; The Inkheart Trilogy Inkheart, Inkspell, and Inkdeath Trilogy is good, but Inkdeath is slow; The Leven Thumps series is really good. xD
Sorry. that probably sounded way lame.

2324085 hahh yep !

yep pretty much!!!

2324085 i am sensing that ember is turning out to be a bad series....exept for the first book?

2197030 People of Sparks and The Diamond of Darkwood is worth it, but skip The Prophet of Yonwood because it is a prequel and is the worst book in the series.

2324085 What is "The Lottery" ? jw...
The Hunger Games did sorta remind me of the City of Ember...i never read on. I began People of Sparks but then I stopped cuz i just got out of it. Any one reccommend me continuing?
i feel like i barely contributed to this comment chain...heheh

2197030 I definitely agree that Hunger Games is very similar to Graceling, especially since I read them both back to back. My cousin who read Hunger Games was telling me about Battle Royale and how it was basically an older version of Hunger Games in Japan.(whoa, lots of italics!)

1379900 Reminded me of The Giver, and also Pendragon #7. But it was WAAAAY better than both of those.

message 16: by Kassy (last edited Mar 13, 2009 12:57AM) (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 I was really reminded of "The Lottery" but then I kind of wound into "The Most Dangerous Game", another short story. But I also thought of The Giver, and The Girl Who Owned a City.

message 15: by Zia (new)

1535675 Just the fact that it took place in the future and it's like a "new world" that it reminded me of The City of Ember.

yay! I just got this from the library the other day! yay!!

message 13: by Mieley (new)

1855973 The Hunger Games is pretty much like every other sci-fi book.. just way better. Any type of futuristic America book, like City of Ember and even Uglies is very similar, just with different plots. Story and character wise I don't think you get any closer than Graceling, by Kristin Cashore.

message 12: by Clickety (new)

85271 There's another short story ... I think it's in one of the lit books I've got at school. "The Survivor"? I'm not sure. Anyway, the setup is similar - manufactured death-matches. However, it looks more at what happens AFTER, to those who make it through and how it affects them, and those around them.

Several reviews have mentioned Battle Royale, but I think the similarity is pretty shallow.

message 11: by Ink Mage (new)

995753 It reminded me a little bit of The Giver, but not really. A lot of people compare The Hunger Games to Graceling (which is also very good), and I agree. I find it amusing that even the two main character's names (Katniss and Peeta, Katsa and Po) in the two books begin with the same letters--and in the girls' even the same first three. Also the prequel/sequel/whatever to Graceling will be titled Fire and The Hunger Games sequel might be Catching Fire? Hmmm...

message 10: by SpeedReader (new)

931848 "The Lottery" is a short story by Shirley Jackson. I studied it in High School. Basically, it's this town getting all excited about this lottery, but you don't know what the winner gets. In the end you find out that the "winner" gets stoned to death by the town ... I can't remember exactly why, but I think it's something along the lines of "appeasing the gods" so that they have good crops or something in the coming year.

message 9: by Lauren (new)

1508168 Is the lottery any good? would anyone recommend this if I liked the hunger games? Someone had said on a blog that it reminded them of the handmaid's tale and this couldn't be more far off. I read that book and it was MUCH more adult like and kind of disturbing actually. The only similarity I saw at all was that it was a distopian novel.

message 8: by SpeedReader (new)

931848 I thought of "The Lottery" immediately after hearing the jacket synopsis.

message 7: by Lauren (new)

1508168 I definately would have said the giver meets lord of the flies. Lord of the Flies really shows that nature mentality of youth being put in a situation like this "out in the wild" so to speak. This was obviously more set up but I found it so different than anything I've ever read. It was a great mashup in a way. I have to admit that the romance twist really caught me as well. I am fully anticipating a full on Peeta/Gale/Katniss love triangle!

message 6: by PJ (new)

764355 Lazygal you nailed it: "I tell them it's The Lottery meets The Truman Show meets Lord of the Flies meets Survivor on steroids..."

I thought not only of Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" immediately but also a short story by Ursula Le Guin "Those Who Walk Away from Omelas," about the suffering of one small child for the good of society and that society accepting it as a part of life. Certainly, there are shades of that here only there is a greater number of children suffering and it is not only for the "greater good" of the 12 Districts (continuing to keep them in line) but for the entertainment of the people in the Capital.

message 5: by Lazygal (new)

170420 Kim and Monica, that's exactly right, but you've forgotten to add Jackson's The Lottery. When I talk to my peers, I tell them it's The Lottery meets The Truman Show meets Lord of the Flies meets Survivor on steroids; with my students, I'll drop The Lottery and The Truman Show (the former isn't read any more, and the latter is before their time) and add City of Ember, House of the Scorpion and/or The Giver/Gathering Blue.

Elissa, I was turned on to Ember by a dyslexic student who told me I *had* to read it; he was very disappointed by Sparks, as was I. The movie's coming out in October and I wonder if the lack of love for the sequels/prequels will affect ticket sales.
