LISTS, LISTS, AND MORE LISTS >
Movies that made you cry
I was thinking about this because of something Rob wrote, is there a film that really touched you or makes you cry whenever you watch it.
Philidelphia always makes me cry, I have't watched it for a few years but whenever I see it oh boy.
Terms of endearment is another weepy.
Where to begin-I've cried at so many movies! With some movies I've cried at different parts because of being at different points in my life-for example-Sleepless in Seattle, I saw it for the first time in college and probably cried then but watching it now as a mom I cry when Jonah talks about starting to forget his mom.
I could break this list up all different ways-
Movies that make me cry every time:
-Terms of Endearment
-An Affair to Remember
-Steel Magnolias
Movies that I cried at in the theater to the point where I was embarassed or my eyes were actually still puffy the next morning:
My Girl
Million Dollar Baby
Boys on the Side
Castaway (very few people have had the same reaction but that movie killed me)
Movies that I cried at originally but now can watch without crying:
-Jerry McGuire
-Good Will Hunting
-The Green Mile (I think I can make it through that dry eyed now-not sure!)
-When a Man Loves a Woman
Most Recent Cry:
-Juno
Philadelphia gets me too-awesome movie!
This is in no way an exhaustive list-I'm always good for a cry!
I think I'm secure enough in my masculinity to post some titles here *cracks open a beer and scratches belly* Ok then...
-One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Man, that end is PERFECT...but the first time I saw it, I was sooooo sad for Jack Nicholson! Another free will squashed by the powers that be!
-The 1976 King Kong remake. When Jessica Lange screams, "Don't shoot him!" at the planes gunning down Kong....I wept. But hey, I was six!
-Awakenings. When you realize Robert DeNiro isn't going to be "awake" much longer and he dances with that woman for the last time. Ugh! Sad.
-Murder in the First. Kevin Bacon wins his trial, but gets sent back to Alacatraz to eventually die. As he's being sent back to prison, he turns and looks at his lawyer and says, "I won, didn't I? I won!". *Sob*
There's probably more, but I don't want to seem like TOO much of a crybaby. Now...what channel's that wrestling match on?

Just about everything above, plus...
Dead Poet's Society
Million Dollar Baby (worth mentioning again for the funeral-esque tears & sobs)
Sense and Sensibility
Gone With the Wind (the loss of "Mellie")
Life is Beautiful
It's a Wonderful Life ("Wrong? Everything's wrong! You call this a happy family? Why did we have to have all these kids?")
Shakespeare in Love
Sleepless in Seattle (Tom Hanks talking over the radio)
White Christmas
You've Got Mail (last scene in the park...somewhere over the rainbow plays)
I'll stop.
Shadowlands (when I saw it everyone in the theater lost it - male and female)AI (the child abandonment scene almost had me runnig out the door)
In The Realms of the Unreal (the sad story of Henry Darger's life, and the loneliness that spawned his fantasy world was tragic)
Silent Running (I bawled when I saw it as a 6-yr-old, then I bawled again when viewed it 30 years later)
The Elephant Man
Sophie's ChoiceThe Joy Luck Club (sobbed uncontrollably)
Life is Beautiful
Schindler's List
The Shawshank Redemption
Titanic
Milo and Otis
I Am Sam
Many more that I can't think of at this moment.
"Big Trouble Little China" i cryed because it was the absolute stupidest movie that i have ever seen but i loved it. "Passion Of The Christ", "Brave Heart" both of those movies really made me cry
The color purple
Steel Magnolias
Hope Floats
This is so embarassing but I cried when Ryan Phillippe died in Cruel Intentions, it was so sad (however I would like to point out that I was pregnant at the time).
Love Actually
Steel Magnolias
The Notebook
Titanic
Romeo and Juliet
Dreamer
Lots more but none come to mind right now.......
Lots of movies make me cry the first time I watch them, but I can never remember things like this on-the-spot. Here's what comes to mind:Atonement
Romeo & Juliet (Baz version)
Boys Don't Cry
Crap, can't think of any others right now.
I just watched "Glory" last night. That one certainly makes me cry. And I'll be watching "Ghandi" again soon, and that one probably makes me cry the most.
The Champ gets me every time as does Terms of Endearment and Beaches. My 4 yo cries at the end of Pochantas
Oh my gosh I don't know how I forgot Beaches, if I even hear wind beneath my wings the tears start running down my face.
Reign Over Me...just saw that again last night and omg! It kills me.
Sleepless in Seattle, the first time I watched it
Hope FLoats
A Star is Born
Terms of Endearment
Philadelphia
Steel Magnolias...I won't watch this one, Philadelphia or Terms of Endearment again because they always make me cry...I hate when someone dies!
I know there are plenty more just can't think of them at the moment.
Good call on Awakenings, Rob. Whatever is human in DeNiro's character is lost, and it's just so gut-wrenching.Movies I avoid unless I need a GOOD cry (as in, I'll feel dehydrated afterwards:
--Hilary and Jackie-- Jaquelin DuPres' (sp?) story is completely sad... interesting reversal-- the unfamous sister is the lucky one in the end.
--Breaking the Waves-- I guess Emily Watson has this effect on me. She just seems so real and vulnerable.
--Dancer in the Dark-- Same director as Breaking the Waves? Lars Von Trier? Sometimes I wonder at how awfully both movies end for the female main characters. Is this a pattern with Von Trier? Is he drawn to these stories? Is that sick?
Philadelphia
Remember the Titans has tear jerker moments
the end of Lord of the Rings Return of the King always gets me.
OMG, Reign Over Me! That whole scene outside of the therapists office - how could you not cry.
Million Dollar Baby - I had no idea how that movie was going to go and I lost it on that one.
We Own The Night - that one got to me a couple of times. They were not shy about bumping people off.
I would have to say The Notebook is my top tear-jerker. I've only seen it once because I just don't think I can go through that again!
There are heaps, I cry all the time!! :-)
Titanic
Dead Poet's Society
The Kite Runner
A Love Song for Bobby Long
Hotel Rwanda
Million Dollar Baby
Love Actually
Patch Adams
These aren't even a smidge of how many I've cried at, even when I watch them again and I know what's going to happen I still cry. I'm thinking there's at least over 100!!
The Red Balloon. If you're not crying when the other balloons take the boy away, there's something seriously wrong with you. I'm crying now just thinking about it.
Old Yeller. Can't believe no one's mentioned this yet. Didn't anyone here see Stripes?
Captain's Courageous. Who didn't cry when Spencer Tracy sinks below the waves?
You all named so many that I forgot! I'm an It's a Wonderful Life crier for certain, how can you not? And Sense and Sensibility gets me every time. Shadowlands absolutely killed me-I was so upset I was angry about it!
Here are a few others
Prince of Tides
The PBS versions of Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea
The Family Stone
In the Bedroom (Tom Wilkinson can convey so much without even speaking-what was the movie with him when he want's a sex change operation, Normal? That killed me too)
I watched Dumbo recently with my son and got teary at the "Baby Mine" scene-Disney knows how to tug at the heartstrings.
Captain's Courageous is soooo good! We loaned out our Spencer Tracy copy and saw a version On Demand so we decided to watch it-Big Mistake! Robert Urich plays Manuel, horrible.
The only possibility of tolerating Robert Urich is if you've never seen Spencer Tracy. If it wasn't Tracy's most affecting performance, it has to be pretty close.
Boystown was pretty good for this category.
The Bells of St. Mary.
I like your choice of In the Bedroom. It hadn't occured to me, but it is a wonderful performance.
There is only one movie that makes me cry every time I watch it
Pay it Forward.
I cry in other movies but usually only the first time I see them.
The strangest movie that made me cry-
Armageddon - I think the shock of Bruce Willis dying. I only went to the movie to see Bruce and Ben Affleck blew stuff up and hopefully take their shirts off. So I was completely off guard when he died.
Oh god, Dancer in the Dark! Horrible story, really got under my skin.
Philadelphia, yes, at the end, and that lovely sweet song playing...
And I completely know what you mean about Armageddon - those kinds of sacrifices always affect me.
Dumbo and Bambi, I can't even watch them now without getting misty eyed, my son looks at me like i'm crazy and says "It's not real you know"
Pay it Forward broke my heart-I cry at that one each time too. I also cried at Armadeddon-I don't think you're alone on that one!Spencer's accent in Captain's Courageous is hystercial but I still love it. My husband used to say to our son "Oh fish, you awake" My dad said that was the first movie he saw in the theater and he cried and cried-his parents had no idea it would be so sad.
Shazzy: Dumbo and Bambi are TERRIBLE! Well, not really terrible, but you know what I mean. The loss of or seperation from a parent strikes a chord with about everyone. Sad, sad, sad....
Forrest Gump: when Forrest is talking to Jenny at her grave and he starts breaking down crying talking about their son. I give that scene 4 hankies.

Rob- I cried when I was a child & I still cry & i'm a grown up (I think) actually I think it's worse now because I have a son. I cried when Sirius Black died in Harry Potter, I couldn't read anymore after that & there was no way I was watching it at the cinema, I had to wait to rent it on dvd!
My family think i'm crazy, ha ha
I was just checking my hotmail & on msn they have a selection of movies that made men cry,
E.T
The Shawshank Redemption
american history X
The champ
Dead poets society
Field of dreams
Forrest Gump
Gladiator
Glory
The gree mile
Kramer v Kramer
My life
Hotel Rwanda
Saving Private Ryan
Seabiscuit
Schindlers list
Stand by me
United 93
Watership down
It's a wonderful life
I can see some of those. Kramer Vs. Kramer really got to me when I was younger because I too was a child of divorce and could relate.
But Gladiator? Come on...who ever cried watching Gladiator?
But Gladiator? Come on...who ever cried watching Gladiator?
These have brought tears to my eyes...Return to Me
Stepmom - so sad and touching!
Million Dollar Baby - that one took me by surprise as well
I was hormonal the other day and watched Lord of the Rings - Return of the King - I cried about Frodo, I cried when Aragorn was made king...
Shazzy, I cried when Syrius died too!
Also when Artreyu's horse gets stuck in the mud and refuses to budge in The Neverending Story - animals and people sacrificing themselves is guaranteed to make me cry! Watership Down, definitely.
I cried in American History X too... but my husband didn't :)
I have to agree Michael the strangest movie that made me cry was Armagedon.
Also the Disney Bambi, Dumbo, Lion King (when Mufasa dies) all of those!
Dead Poets Society, I can't watch the end with out balling!
Star Wars Empire Strikes Back, when Hans Solo is frozen in Carbinite (as I was growing up he was my favorite character and I couldn't handle it!) A Koren Movie called Oasis
West Side Story
Edward Scissor Hands
I'm sure there are many more!
Shannon, i'm not going to the cinema to see the next Harry Potter films, my son has forbidden to go if i'm gonna start crying again & I probably will!
Cast Away! When Tom's character finally reunites w/Helen Hunt's character. 5 hankies! Heart wrenching! The whole scene!Did anyone have Patch Adams listed? That was another killer.
Some others (sorry if I'm repeating):
Beaches!! Did anyone say that already? If not, for shame!!
The Color Purple (please say someone listed that already. 10 hankies!)
Steel Magnolias (20 freakin' hankies!)
Jerry Maguire
Juno
I'm a total crybaby too Mandy! Just saw you have Patch Adams on your list too.
Top #1 cry movie for me was Dancer in the Dark. Every person in the theater was crying at the end. My friend who saw it with me turned to me and said "This movie hurt my heart." I remember I felt like i had been emotionally manipulated by this film.
Also- I totally cried at the end of Finding Neverland.
the Ice Storm (the end did it)Breaking the Waves
sometimes something is so brilliant it has that effect: Rushmore (perfect wind-up and ending)
"But Gladiator? Come on...who ever cried watching Gladiator?"
Uhm, I cried so hard at the end I had to stagger to the bathroom and weep in peace so my husband wouldn't think I had lost my mind.
How can someone not turn into a puddle when Russell Crowe is staggering around the arena, dying, putting out his hand to "open" the gate of his home and watching his wife and son run to him. My God. Are you heartless!
The Color Purple
Sophie's Choice
Schindler's List (at the end when the survivors' children are placing rocks on the grave)
Sounder
Old Yeller
E.T.
Steel Magnolias (when Sally Field said she was there when her daughter was brought into the world and would be there when she left it)
Shawshank Redemption
Sixth Sense (when the little boy finally opened up to his mother in the car)
Places in the Heart (when the black man had to leave the farm and Sally Field told him how much he meant to the success of the crop)
My Mother's Castle (the end when we learn what the grown son did in honor of his mother)
The Champ (I was a kid when I cried at this one)
Benji (when I was a kid)
Did you also cry when John Wayne died in The Sands of Iwo Jima? Or King Kong in the original? well, ok, I confess I did feel a bit bad for King Kong who died for love, after all.
Tressa: Well, I like to THINK I have a heart. I just didn't find the ending of Gladiator all that sad. Some sad parts in movies work for me, some don't. I'm surprised so many people DID cry at the end of Gladiator....so I take back my comment. I learned something new today.
Rob, I was only joshing about people not having a heart if they didn't cry at the end of Gladiator. It must've struck me in a certain way and played on my own feelings and experiences during that one scene. We all have our own little times when we're touched in some way and have to grab a tissue. That was my time. I don't know if anyone else I've ever talked to admitted to crying about his death.
George, never saw The Sands of Iwo Jima. But I did feel sad for Kong even though I didn't cry. I also feel sad for animated dinosaurs I see get devoured in documentaries. I do cry when dogs/cats get hurt or killed in movies. Always had a soft spot in my heart for animals and proud of it.
Well, that's alright, everybody has a soft spot for cats and dogs. Even Carl Denholm felt bad for King Kong, and more than a bit guilty. and the John Wayne line was just for fun, although his death is quite a tragedy in terms of the film, but the viewer wasn't expected to cry back then, but soldier on, more determined than ever. The Jurassic Park 3 scene where the T-rex chomped the family pet must have caused a bit of trauma.
Movies that make me cry:
Braveheart
Schindler's List
Romeo & Juliet (the Baz Luhrmann version)
The English Patient
I can't think of any at the top of my head now.
Lynn: That's OK. I didn't take it all THAT personally. And, like I said before, I DID cry when King Kong died. And that was the 70's remake!!
