What? They wouldn't take your car as payment? ;)I listen while grocery shopping, too... but I generally use self-check out. I could totally see myself doing that though!! :)
1. When you absentmindedly stuff the end of your windbreaker's hood drawstring into your ear. 2. When you hand the store clerk your car keys in payment of groceries because you are so caught up in your listen you totally zone out.
I did these things just this week.

When you get irritated that your spouse wants to go on your walk with you because all you really want to do is finish one of your books.
I just went crazy and put like 10 audio books on hold through interlibrary loan, thinking I would get like 1-2 at a time; however, 8 of them are now available for me to pick up at the library!! I don't know how I am going to listen to all of them in 3 weeks!

I have sat in my garage trying to get to the end of a disk! (garage door open of course :)

I have never given up a date, but I have been caught reading on a date. He went to the bathroom, came back and I had a book out (not an audiobook). He smiled, then pulled his book out of his pocket. Would make for a cuter story if we were still together...
When you wake up and have ipod and headphone cord shapes indented into your body from falling asleep while listening.

What can I say? I'm a hardened criminal as I listen to Jane Austen while tooling on my bike. Luckily I've never actually gotten a ticket.

You ought to move, you live in Gestapo City! I bike on my trail every day here in Florida, Jane Austin going north and Henry James going south in total enclosure. I'm floored. We need to see you in the news, fighting for audio books on bikes!
You can in a car zoom along with a happy meal in one hand, attending to a super sized sugar drink that doesn't quite fit in the holder, a cellhone, ipod and some friends to chat with while the radio/cd blasting and thats's ok???

I'm considering that - they say the cheap ear buds cause you to turn up the volume and hurt your hearing. The only thing that is stopping me is that it is illegal to cover both ears with earphones when driving or biking. I've been stopped several times.

I haven't quite gotten to that point either. Although there have been times when I started listening while washing dishes, and by the time I was done cleaning, the microwave was clean, the oven was spotless (the outside), and the refrigerator has been cleaned out... ;)

Well, I wouldn't say that I look forward to the task, but the listening definitely eases the pain.
Because of audiobooks, you actually look forward to the menial tasks you do while listening... dishes, cleaning, etc.

In response to the original question; "How do you know when you are an audiobook junkie?"
My answer:
When your wife threatens divorce if you don't take those ear buds out in her presence.
I LOVE Persuasion! I'd love to have it on audiobook.... I wonder if any of the public domain versions are any good....EDIT: I like the 4th version on LibriVox best, I think... The girl has a British accent, so that makes it more real to me. Plus her version is the shortest, and I like people who read fast...
I went out for a walk in our neighborhood one night after dinner and a guy drove up beside me in his car, rolled the window down and yelled, "Where the hell have you been? You've been gone for three hours!" My husband usually is more understanding as he listens to books on tape too. I just got a new Sansa Fuze and am reading "Marine One." That night it was Jane Austen's "Persuasion."
When you start laughing on the treadmill and the guy lifting weights in front of you gives you a dirty look, because he is SURE you are laughing at him.
When your husband calls you to "keep you company" during your commute to work and you get a little annoyed that he's cutting into your audiobook time.<---guilty

I know what you mean i do the something but in the end i love it
I totally agree with you, Cathy. I wait for the renewal day, and still ponder my "next listen" list and all the new things on the site just to be sure I'm getting the exactly best thing at that moment with my 2 credits!
When you're seriously considering spending $100 on headphones just to listen to books--not not for music.
When in your mind you're tallying up your late fees for the Buddha tapes you are holding onto and still letting it slide. Times are good, times are bad? At $0.30/day - $9/ month not so bad. Lets find that enlightenment once more.
I know I'm an audiobook junkie when I find myself trolling for audiobooks at 2 am. Or when my monthly credit on Audible become available and I'm wrought with desire and indecision about what book to buy next.
Hahaha... Good point! How awful would it be to be stuck there in a broken body with a fully-functional mind, and not have a book to listen to! ;)
saranicole wrote: "Ummmm... yes. I think you could safely say you were an audiobook junkie if you did that... True story?"Slightly exaggerated; there's no actual list, but my son knows which podcasts I listen to, and where my audio books are stored, and how to transfer them to my player. And I have had a serious conversation with him, and everyone close to me, reminding them to provide some interesting audio if that situation were to happen (of course I hope it doesn't). I have a feeling my son would take advantage of the opportunity to finally get me to listen to the some of his favorite titles :)
Sorry, I know it's a slightly morbid topic. But I do have a very real fear of being hospitalized, fully conscious without the ability to communicate, with the radio tuned to a channel I can't stand, or the television prattling-on all day and night with mindless nonsense, when I could actually be listening to a book from my list :)
Ummmm... yes. I think you could safely say you were an audiobook junkie if you did that... True story?
When you have distributed to loved-ones a detailed list of audio books, public radio programs, and podcasts with a schedule showing EXACTLY what is to be played for you, and in which order, in case you are ever hospitalized in a comatose state.
When I encouraged my wife to buy an audiobook rental store. Now I'm on the unlimited rental plan (and I get the owner discount too).
Holly wrote: "How about when you have to buy ANOTHER 500GB hard drive because your ripped-from-the-library and Audible member audiobook collection has filled the first one? And you have more audiobooks than you ..."lol!! that's hilarious, Holly, and quite appropriately reflects my present hard drive problems. :)
For my job, I drive my personal vehicle around to different construction sites... But sometimes I'll just drive around town randomly, taking the longest possible way back to work. Not to skip work (although that's a byproduct), but to listen to my book on tape for longer... :)
