Racy/sexy writing - who writes the best?
I was wondering who you all would nominate for the best racy/sexy/smutty PNR writers out there? Mainstream, little known, erotica - anything PNR. Basically, who has the most imaginative, intense, extreme, prolific, or just plain well-written sex scenes?
I would nominate Laurell K. Hamilton for the sexiest of the mainstream writers.
I couldn't second Hamilton cause I've only read one and it didn't ahave any sex at all!
So far I think I'd nominate Elizabeth Amber and Emma Holly for well-written and steamy and imaginative. Christine Feehan and Jaquelyn Frank are good at intense. Kresley Cole is my favourite though :)
IMO, Hamilton's sex scenes rely too much on repeated phrases that throw me completely out of the scene. "It was like he was trying to pound his way through her and out the other side" and variations thereof couldn't be farther from sexy to me. Ouch.Keri Arthur does write incredibly sexy scenes, and I really appreciate that she doesn't pepper her sex scenes with euphemisms.
I'm pulling a complete blank on other writers! Argh! Will have to post again when I'm at home.
I haven't checked in on here in forever. I'm horrible at bulletin board stuff! But, I'd have to nominate Cheyenne McCray here. I know she started in erotica but I love her Magic Series and the pages almost catch FIRE when you read them! LOL
JR Ward is another good one, although I was severely disappointed in her last. And Krelsey Cole is up there too, for me. :o)
Keri Arthur, definitely. I'm not a fan of flowery sex scenes like Feehan loves so much, or using words like "sheath" etc. (you get the idea :). Ugh. The way Feehan writes, words like that really stick out at me.
I would agree that LKH writes the sex better in Gentry over Blake, but geez...if read "his length" one more time, I'm going to scream!
For me it's Meljean Brook every time. Not too flowery but not to blunt either. And it's never the same twice. Her guys have got moves! :)
Oh no, not the "sheath" - LOL!
As I'm fairly new to PNR, I'll have to go with Kresley Cole. But based on the comments here, I'm going to definitely check out this Keri Arthur. Any top picks from Ms. Arthur?
All I've read is the Riley Jenson Guardian series, of which the first is Full Moon Rising. They're great, and very steamy! :-)
I agree with all that was posted. But I've got to add Angela Knight as well as Susan Sizemore, although Sizemore's isn't 'as steamy' as the others, she does really good, LOL!
ok... Im just doing the selfless self promotion...But Audra and I write some pretty sexy stuff... Hell our love scene in The Soft Edge of Midnight won best Love scene at Ecata Sensual for 2007... So we gotta be doing something right.
LOL
S
My vote for well-written erotica goes to Elizabeth Amber's The Lords of Satyr. Her books leave me with wet dreams. As for plain vanilla sexy Susan Sizemore's Primes series.
This is for Mahlet - Keri Arthur writes the 'Riley Jenson Guardian' series. I like her!
Book #1 - Full Moon Rising
Book #2 - Kissing Sin
Book #3 - Tempting Evil
Book #4 - Dangerous Games
Book #5 - Embraced by Evil
Book #6 - The Darkest Kiss (will be out at the end of April '08)
She also writes other stuff, but I haven't read any of it yet. You can always check her out here:
http://www.keriarthur.com/ or at:

I would like to throw in Erin McCarthy and her Seven Deadly Sins series into the ring. I've only read the first one (My Immortal) but I think the book melted as I was reading it.
I agree with Ja'niece Elizabeth Amber's "Lords of Satyr" series is really good. Joey K. Hill is really, really, good as well. Especially if you like Vampires. It's not only steamy it's a great story. It's Called "The Vampire Queen's servant"
she has a sequel called " The Mark of the
Vampire Queen" but I haven't read it yet.
I would definitely have to go with JR Ward and Lora Leigh. Leigh over Ward, though. She steams it up fast, but everything seems to be realistic. The other thing about her writing is that the characters don't continue to complain about everything - they actually try to figure out how to be happy! So, I would have to disagree about LKH. There's so much angst going on, it's hard to get into a "sexy" frame of mind to enjoy the juicy parts properly. That and some of those situations are just impossible.
You know with LKH...Its turned into "how many people can Anita Shag in one chapter and still make it pseudo- believable" with pretty much every book since Cerulean Sins. It turned me off the Anita, though I still read the Merry books.
I like a Bite more story with my sex, and Anita is really just sex... and some of it is completely unbelievable... though I will give her that was a little woman... She takes a lot, LOL.
I must co-sign on Lora Leigh. I've just read a few of her Breed series books and she does a great job of writing steamy, well written, non-euphemistic, and plentiful scenes and she still manages to have a story and plot.
A lot of my picks have already been said. But my favorites are Lora Leigh (although sometimes the men can be a little too overbearing), Emma Holly, Kresley Cole, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Shiloh Walker, Cheyenne McCray, Lara Adrian, and Jean Johnson for Paranormal. And for mainstream and historical are Susan Johnson, Shannon McKenna, and Robin Schone. Not that I read a lot of authors with dirty scenes. LOL!
I'd have to vote for J.R. Ward, and Karen Marie Moning is pretty good too. If you want to get really wild and crazy, though, I'd have to say Kate Douglas. She writes it all! lol...
Lora Leigh wins for most "Crude" which isn't a bad thing! LOL I have all of her books.
I love LKH... she's the smart ass that writes it rough and raw. There are no limits to her imagination, and no lines uncrossed. I admire that.
Christine Feehan drives me insane with her "molten" crap. I just can't go there anymore.
JR Ward aka "My crack" can write a hot scene.
I guess it just depends on your comfort zone. *Shrug*
I really like Anya Bast's sex scenes in Witch Fire and Witch Blood. They're incredibly sexy and very light on the flowery euphemism. I definitely appreciate someone who can write explicit sex scenes without being crude or sounding like a letter to Penthouse.
Sunny! She's the only author I've read yet with any sex scenes. I haven't reached the raunchiness in Anita Blake yet so Sunny wins. Especially in Lucinda Darkly...love it
Nalini Singh can also write a mean love scene.I recently read a couple of PR from Annmarie McKenna and while I enjoyed them, some of the 'love' scenes were a little too blunt for my liking and I started subbing my own words cause she used the same three fricking words time and time again. That said, they were still pretty hot.
I agree with LKH but also I think Lynn Viehl(dDarkyn) and Lynsay sands( Argeneau) also write some steamy scenes as well.
Absolute #1 erotic/hotest/steamiest novels are written by Cheyenne McCray!
I have read alot of the mentioned series writers and there are some really great scenes out there, but by far Cheyenne McCray wins hands tied! (oops, meant down...lol)
and Jaquelyn Frank wins for best emotional bond between her characters.
and I won't forget JR Ward and the BDB-they get it for Best All Around novels!
I agree about Karen Marie Moning, we had another thread going on about her and while she doesn't write TONS of sex into her books, what she does write is pretty powerful. I have been reading romance novels for almost 20 years and usually I just skim the sex parts because it all seemed the same to me by now, but her stuff was, well, whew, HOT! Love it.
Probably Lora Leigh, Sarah McCarty, Reese Gabriel or Jaid Black, although in Killer Secrets it was weird to see the female lead suddenly wax purple during a scene. She should stick to what she does best. Ward, Holly, Dodd, and Walker aren't bad either. Ward isn't really the raciest writer I've read, but she has one of the racier covers, for sure, LOL.
LA Banks... no doubt about it. Her Vampire Huntress Series is so detailed... my husband calls them my porn books lol
Defiantly The Last of the Red Hot Vampires. Gotta read, uh-hu, you do.Second would be Lady and the Vamp, but not a lot of romance in it, only two scenes that are 'racy'.
Well I have a few I'd like to
nominate in order of my best picks
#1 Lora leigh for her breed Series
#2. Lara Adrain for her midnight breed series
#3.Susan Sizemore for her primal series
#4. Krelsey Cole
#5. Shiloh Walker
#6. jr WARD
I adore LKH for sexy writing, I'm not going to lie! She's just my sort of thing, especially in the Meredith Gentry series. If you're into BDSM, bloodplay etc and pretty kinky stuff, she's a good match. I quite like Susan Squires, though she doesn't have a TON of sex in her books. But the style is natural and hot.
George RR Martin is straight fantasy, but there are some sex scenes and while they are generally rather short and not terribly graphic, they are arousing and naturally written. Also, some kinky and violent stuff which is not always overtly sexual but still arousing.
I don't know if this counts as PNR - it's more alternate reality, very loosely paranormal - but I find Nicholas Baker's The Fermata very arousing no matter how many times I reread it, and there's a lot of sex, much of it very creative. I didn't find his book Vox (which is not paranormal at all) very arousing or particularly notable, so I guess it's just that one book - maybe because of the fantastical element?
I think Christine Feehan is awful, though because I adore vampires so much, she still arouses me, much to my shame. So I don't know if that makes her good or bad. She gets the job done, so to say, and I can't stop reading her Dark series, but I cringe while being aroused - I'm not even sure how that's possible!
Lynsay Sands is solidly decent.
I dislike but don't hate Katie MacAlister's sex writing. It doesn't do much for me. I HATE her characters though so I refuse to read more of her stuff.
Stephenie Meyer is terrible, though she really only writes kissing/peter. Zero on the arousal meter.
I think Anne Rice is REALLY terrible, and don't even find any of her stuff remotely arousing. I also detest her version of vampires. I hate her with a passion, if you can't tell.
I totally agree you about LKH. There is just something about her scenes that keeps me glued to my chair until they are over and then I have to take a break for a minute to digest what I just experienced. I love both her AB and MG series.
I'm going to have to nth JR Ward, Kresley Cole, and Lara Adrian. However, I'm not a big fan of Keri Arthur's series. For me, Arthur is sort of an example of where the paranormal/urban genre is starting to jump the shark-- so much sex it starts to get silly, wrapped up in weak plot lines with the same old, same old characters I've seen in other series. But, you know, that's just my humble opinion.
Mfred, everyone's entitled to their opinion.
It's been a while since I checked in, and I was just going over the new posts. Seems I better start adding Kresley Cole into my MUST BE READ listing.
A new note: Gotta add Alexandra Ivy. (fanning myself here). Incredible and intense!
Stella, I agree with you about LKH. The Harlequin is still sitting in my TBR shelf. I got so disgusted and turned off during the last book that I have no urge to pick it up. None whatsover. But I do like her MG series!
And I almost tripped over myself. I absolutely did forget to add you and Audra. If we ever get to meet, smack me silly, will ya?
I am now adding Pleasure Unbound and Lori Handeland (Any Given Doomsday) to the list, lol. When you get the chance, you all should give them a go.
Kresley Cole is still my favorite, but Gena Showalter writes a good, steamy love scene as well. Her Lords of the Underworld series is hot!
you all have to read LA Banks. Her Vampire Huntress Series are very sexual... and very in detail lol
I am on book 3 of the vampire huntress series, love it! But I've read her novellas and yes can make an image linger in your mind like few have before. I really enjoy reading her.
=),

Based on the reviews of LA Banks books I haven't had any desire to give them a try. I don't think I'd enjoy all the street slang and I know I'm not interested in her religious views. It seems like people either hate her or love her.
I read reviews of books and comtemplate the good and bad. If it's an author I have not read I'll put the book on my TBR pile, but not as a high priority (like Blush for instance wasn't liked by many but I liked Wicked Ties and wanted to try another book by Shayla Black}. If it's an author I have read and the reviews are bad I'll just go ahead and read the book for myself. I like the opinions of others, but I do like to form my own.
Dean Koontz gets an auto-buy from me everytime. He's like a drug I can't refuse =).
I can see conflict with personal views and an author's play with words in a book. I get bored when authors treat adults as if they are teens with attitudes. If they wanted to write a book like that, write young adult.
Why is it I didn't like the BDB by J D Ward but it gets such praise? I wonder if I'll find anyone that didn't like it, or can at least let me know why they liked it so much...ok rambling is over =)

Kenjii,
I'm not gonna reread JRWARD series- but I did enjoy them- I thought they were very well written and introed a whole new vamp world --which I LOVE WHEN AN AUTHOR CREATES A NEW WORLD (aka shana abe)I do think she could have laid off of the lessers - too much of those scenes for sure.
I much prefer Lara Adrain for her midnight breed series -as I've already said-I have reread her..and it doesn't get stale.
