199350 I'm sorry Erie that you're sick. But can I admit that I giggled a bit? (I guess never tussle with a Michiganian over the weather!) Karma, sweet. heh

332925 That's funny and a little sad, Erie! Sorry your sick. Closing this post now... time to vote gang!

540865 OMG!! I owe Meghan an apologize. The next day after posting about "sunbathing" the rain poured heavily in my town for two days in a row! I was stucked in the traffic jam because of heavy flood! not to mention dripping wet... Now I get a bad cold and I can't stop sneezing! aaarrgghh, this is terrible..
Me and my big mouth always got me in trouble, hehe..
sorry Meghan--I hope you take back your "curse" upon me, haha... and apparently my "summer" have to wait until next month...

Nophoto-f-25x33 I also nominate Anna Karenina.

199350 Courtney - you've convinced me. I may delve into TPDP even if it's not chosen!

Sarah - It better be flippin scorching!! I fully intend of baking myself into oblivion.

Erie - If I didn't like you so well, I'd say I hate you for that last comment. (Shaking fist in your general direction!!) MEANIE!!

411786 Meghan, The weather here is awful as well. Rain, rain, rain, rain, cold, overcast rain. We have had like 4 days over 65 the entire spring. And in no time, it will be 100 degrees with 100% humidity. I cannot face it. If we weren't just about to move to our new house, I would want to flee to a coast.

I think you will LOVE Dorothy Parker, but it might take you a minute to warm up to her. She is bitter, bitter, mean and bitter. But really funny and a brilliant writer. And terse. So its not a novella you read, but a spare and brilliant story or poem that socks you in the eyes. I have been deeply in love with her for easily ten years.

They should have adapted some of her stories at the time and had Bette Davis play them. In her prime, she could have pulled it off stone cold.

I LOVE the idea of some long classics reads. TPDP is perfect for it and there are several LONG classics I really need to face.

540865 Yeah, I'm well aware that Les Mis is not on the list. I'm just trying to sneak this book though, in case somebody had forgotten that this book not on the list (busted!) ;)

And Meghan--sorry if it's still snowy in Michigan.. Really, cause I'm in the middle of sunbathing while I'm posting this ;)

332925 Sadly, Erie, Les Miserables cannot be nominated as it is not on the list. :(

message 21: by Sara W (new)

196350 Not that it really matters (since it's already been nominated repeatedly) but I nominate Anna Karenina.

message 20: by Sarah (new)

193255 Snap! You owe me a coffee!

message 19: by Meghan (new)

199350 Sarah - I was thinking of the same thing! Mainly because the "classics" choices that remain are mostly the long ones that would require 2-3 months.

message 18: by Sarah (new)

193255 Meghan, you'll be in for a shock when you come out to CA then! It's already been in the 80s and I swear it got up to 90 over the weekend. By the time you visit it'll be a scorcher!

There are so many good nominations here! I don't know how I'll choose!! Maybe we should keep up the one long book over 3 months thing for a while until we read several of them.

message 17: by Meghan (new)

199350 My nomination for summer reading is The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand.

And Erie, you are just mean, mean, mean. It's still snowing in Michigan this month! It's been the longest winter in Michigan since 1922 (or something like that). But we're having a heat wave right now. I believe it's getting in the 50s!

540865 Did somebody just mentioned my name? Well, apparently somebody did ;P

The Count of Monte Cristo really makes me drooling. Frankly, I just don't "understand" about this summer reading, since Dini and I lived in tropical country (rain & dry season only) :)
Anyway, since the rain season is almost over in here, and we're heading for a long dry and hot season for the next six months. So, indeed it's "summer" in here :)

Les Miserables for a long hot summer anyone?
Michele, I'll be more than happy to persuade you to read Les Mis, even dancing Macarena if I have to! :)

message 15: by Sera (new)

576203 No worries, Tina. This is the nomination process. Michele will post a separate thread for the vote in a few days. There's lots of activity here so sometimes one can get confused ;)

message 14: by Dharma (new)

1022057 ok...confused newbie...again...um, I thought this was the vote?! *blushes*

message 13: by Dini, the master of meaning (new)

245923 Michele, you should talk to Erie then. He LOVES Les Miserables, and will surely have a great time persuading you to read it. Hee.

Am loving the nominations so far. Can't wait to vote!

message 12: by whichwaydidshego?, the sage of sass (new)

332925 Oi, Meghan! I nominated TPDP first! Am I chopped liver over here?? ;D

I'm PRAYING it's Monte Cristo for the same reason as Courtney... because as much as I want to read it (DYING TO), I don't think I'll do it otherwise, it's just sooo dang long! But I'm thrilled to hear it's a great, fast read!

Too bad Les Miserables isn't on the list! That's the other huge one I want to get to.

message 11: by Arielle (new)

274870 Anna Karenina
Count of Monte Cristo

message 10: by Meghan (new)

199350 Oh lord Courtney, now you've got me nervous! ha!

I was actually going to nominate TPDP (because I went out and bought it) but I kind of got the vibe that people were in a Russian saga kind of mood. But I'm all for Dorothy. So thanks for nominating her!

Oh, and Monte Cristo is seriously one of the most fun "classics" I've ever read. I personally don't think it's long enough for 3 months though. It reads like a summer blockbuster, fast and furious.

message 9: by Courtney (new)

411786 Count of Monte Cristo (otherwise I am literally NEVER going to read it)

Anna Karenina

The Portable Dorothy Parker (only third because I have read it like 30 times). But I am DYING to know Meghan's reaction to it. I can't tell if she will LOVE it or HATE it.

message 8: by Dharma (new)

1022057 I secound the yeah, I vote for "The Count of Monte Cristo" great summer read! =)

message 7: by whichwaydidshego?, the sage of sass (new)

332925 Yeah for Count!!! That's my first, first, first choice! (In case it wasn't obvious since I keep nominating it in the classic months!)

The Portable Dorothy Parker
Great Expectations

message 6: by Emily (new)

976884 Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky

message 4: by Jamie (new)

898662 How about War and Peace?

message 3: by Alison, the guru of grace (new)

124482 Ditto--Anna Karenina.

message 1: by whichwaydidshego?, the sage of sass (last edited Apr 15, 2008 01:29AM) (new)

332925 Wow, gang, is it that time already??? So this is the month that we select a summer reading book that will span three months. We decided this would be a great opportunity to put up for bid some of those intensely long books from the list.

So, gang, nominate away. Since we don't have this chance too often, I'll not limit the number of books you can add to the list. Just remember if you are nominating multiple books that not only are they competing against one another as well as the other's choices so if there is one you are particularly interested in, you might hone in on that book.

We do want the nominations to be from the RGBC list. This is not a combination nomination. We will be doing separate monthly nominations for (shorter) companion book during June, July, and August. We also are not restricting it to a classic or a modern... Just so it's long!

Have fun!

*Nominations will close on the 22nd, as always, and voting will begin the following day.
