Jamie wrote: "Does a book about magician's count? I think of them as being a part of a circus/carnival. I was thinking of reading Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell."Unless the magicians actually perform in a circus or were former circus performers no - so that doesn't work.
Does a book about magician's count? I think of them as being a part of a circus/carnival. I was thinking of reading Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell.
Hi, would The Vampire's Assistant and Other Tales from the Cirque Du Freak by Darren Shan work for this challenge? Thanks!
I love to read about the circus and carnival life. I would highly recommend Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury and The Final Confession Of Mabel Stark byRobert Hough. These books made me adore the subject.
Any of the old paperback series by Ann Maxwell would work. In at least the first two,
Fire Dancer and
Dancer's Luck. I don't remember if the third one
Dancer's Illusion is as centered on the circus or carnival theme but I think so.

Thank you! I didn't even think of The Disapparation of James, which I own and have wanted to read for quite some time.
I was planning to read A Son of the Circus by Irving (which I also own and really want to read), but I have a few other Irvings worked into the challenge so I think I'll switch this one out.

Hey Jamie, thanks for the link. I checked out the site and there are a couple of books there that sound intriguing to me. This one had me stumped for while, and your link was a big help!
Amanda wrote: "Would The Red Pony by Steinbeck work? Ponies are in the circus, right?"It would need to have a pony that was in the circus/had been in the circus - just having animals that are typically found in circuses Elephants, Lions etc. in the story isn't what I'm looking for.
For people who like to read plays, Liliom by Franz (or Ferenc) Mohner takes place at a carnival. It is the play the movie and stage play Carousel is based on.
i can't decide if i want to read geek love or nights at the circus for this task. i've already read (and loved!) water for elephants. hmmm.
Amanda wrote: "Would The Red Pony by Steinbeck work? Ponies are in the circus, right?"If that doesn't work, you might check out Steinbeck's Burning Bright A Play in Story Form. It's definitely set at the circus.
Blood and Circuses Phryne Fisher by Kerry Greenwood is a great book - number 6 in the Phryne Fisher mystery series. I read it for the summer challenge.
This one is a childrens' classic, it has been years since I read it, and it may be terribly politically incorrect, and totally out of fashion, but hey!, Much in the Horatio Alger vein - Toby Tyler, or Ten Weeks with a Circus. And Lord Valentine's Castle is a true classic of fantasy and social commentary, the first novel in Silverberg's masterful Majipoor Chronicles, and a great circus story.
Elantriel wrote: "Would Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury work for this challenge? Its set at a carnival, not a circus."A Carnival is fine.
Would Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury work for this challenge? Its set at a carnival, not a circus.
Liz wrote: "im planning on reading Geek Love A Novelby Katherine Dunn"i'll be re-reading this for the challenge. like Donna Jo said, it IS awesome. hope you enjoy it, too! :)

Geek Love is awesome and rather unforgettable.
