One of the simple and well written books i have ever had the good time to come across. The character of Stevens is a simple and complicated fellow at the same time. The author pulls this off with much ease and the entire book is a pleasure to go through. The way Steven narrates the varied anecdotes with Mr. Farraday has made me time and again to go back to the book and skip through a few of my favorite scenes..
Damn. My own nomination and I haven't got time to read it. Might be able to towards the end of the month. For now I'll just say that I've seen the film and I think it's excellent. Really. I recommend it.
I'm more than half-way through and really enjoying this book. I like the way Stevens thinks back on things.
I agree completely with Arun - such an interesting book. I read it quite some time ago and I really wish I had time to read it again. Good movie adaptation too.
Finished! Loved this book and the characters. I thoroughly enjoy reading the everyday happenings in the lives of the characters. Loved its subtlety and dignity.
I started reading it, but haven't gotten too far in to actually get feel of it. Ugh, sometimes I wish i didn't have school, so I could read all day long.
Personally, I didn't like Stevens. The way he chose duty over his dying father completely killed me.
I think Stevens is an immensely tragic character. Personally I don't think like or dislike comes into it much. Well, I suppose it does - I would just rather a flawed character like Stevens, who is like the last bridge standing between the traditional and the modern England. Such a beautiful, sensitive book.
Stevens really was a sad character in a way because he was so trapped in his role (voluntarily). It seemed to me that Stevens finally realized in the end that perhaps he should not have trusted the judgment of his employer so explicitly without question. Great book. Movie was pretty good, although they changed some things from the book. (Don't they always!)

I finally finished this book. I'm with you, Galya, I didn't like Stevens. His self-absorption and unkindness to his dad and Miss Kenton made it impossible for me to sympathize with him.
