I'm trying to compile a list to discuss on my upcoming blog about books that talk about the responsibility involved in having a pet. I do pet therapy programs with my dogs, Brandy and Val, and there are a LOT of books out there with cute dog stories but very few with messages about responsibility. Please send me your favorites. I hope to have my blog up and running shortly. In the meantime, you can email me at info@BrandyandVal.com or access me through my website http://www.BrandyandVal.com. Listen about Brandy and Val's story (from shelter dogs to pet therapy pups) in my interview today http://www.thechildrenauthorsshow.com/
Ilene - may I suggest Darby's Story The Life of an Adpted Dog. Here is my Bio, about the book and endorsement from Lake County, Ca. Director of Animal care and control. I hope this helps.
Martha Steward lives in Northern California with her adopted cats Bear, Mim, Goober, and Widdle One and her horse Picabo. She enjoys writing her children's book series about her adopted pets. She has a passion and love for unwanted animals and throughout her stories encourage her readers to be aware these animals need love and a home
Darby's Story is an inspirational book about how adopting a pet can bring so much joy to you and your family. Darby lived a full fifteen years and touched many people with his big heart. Darby also had an adventurous side.
This inspiring book of Darby's life shows just how bringing a rescue pet into your life can entertain and enrich. Darby was an incredibly loved family member. In an industry where we see so many devastating outcomes, do what we do. Children and adults of all ages should hear this story, it inspires caring and compassion for all living creatures.

Great! Thanks. I will check it out. I will be starting a blog soon and many of my posts will be advocating adopting shelter dogs/strays, etc. and caring for pets. I hope to discuss various books on the subject. I will announce when it's up and running but it should be in the next week. Keep checking my webiste: http://www.BrandyandVal.com to see.
I do not know if this book will fit what you need exactly, but it is such a great story about two guinea pigs with an element of mystery that I just have to recommend it:A Tale of Two Guinea Pigs
This is an amazingly funny, charming and engaging children's book. It is written in "classical English mystery" style, but for children and with a nine year old girl as a detective. The guinea pigs are hilarious, and adorable, and unlike any guinea pigs you have ever known, but if there ever was a contest for "the most guinea pig's behavior among guinea pigs" Pip and Teddy will win it hands down.
The story is beautifully and eloquently written. The characters brought to life so well, I could almost hear Pip perform his songs. Molly Jane, the nine year old detective, reminded me of Miss Marple. Well, much, much younger Miss Marple.
I think this is a fantastic children's book. I would especially recommend it for children who own several pets. For children who have guinea pig pets this book is a must, because it finally proves the obvious: Guinea Pigs are the best animals in the whole wide world and they CAN TALK, though they do not always choose to do so.
