1376766 Hello all... It's already that time again!

Please nominate your November group read choice... :)

We'll start voting on Nov 9th.

1356469 Shogun by James Clavell

It is about an english bloke washed up in Japan during the 1600's and having to come to terms with that.

Why am I nominating this? Or rather, why should you vote for this? Because, despite being the brickiest of bricks, it is an excellent brick and you will be absorbed into a heavenly month of brilliant reading.

message 3: by Lyn M (new)

2124637 I am not nominating this month so as not to compete.

message 4: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 Wow Fi, I feel like your nomination is a campaign promise. O_o

"Vote For Shogun for this month's Group Read for a Heavenly Month of Brilliant Reading!"

*Paid for by supporters of Shogun for November Group Read.*

1356469 With a money back guarantee!

message 6: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 REALLY??

message 7: by Fiona (new)

1356469 small print: must have read at least 1000 pages before refund!

message 8: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 oh. But once I've read that I can get my money back too, right?

message 9: by Fiona (new)

1356469 That only depends whether you're prepared to send a pound of flesh with it.

message 10: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 Umm... You should really list all of the fine print up front. O_o

message 11: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 But as it happens, I have many pounds of flesh I'd be willing to ship off. Take your pick! :P

message 12: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 OK... so a recap of our Nominations so far:

Shogun.

message 13: by Heather, Poof! I'm a mod. (new)

1412137 LMAO! Fiona's campaigned well, apparently.

message 14: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 I think everyone else is afraid to nominate anything. (You didn't see anyone threatening kneecaps did you?)

message 15: by Lyn M (new)

2124637 We are just rewarding Fiona for her persistence.

message 16: by Fiona (new)

1356469 Oh this is too easy. Can I nominate something else?

message 17: by Heather, Poof! I'm a mod. (last edited Nov 03, 2009 11:27AM) (new)

1412137 Well I guess I'll go ahead and throw another nom out there just for grins. How about:

Lion of Ireland by Morgan Llywelyn

King, warrior, and lover Brian Boru was stronger, braver, and wiser than all other men-the greatest king Ireland has ever known. Out of the mists of the country's most violent age, he merged to lead his people to the peak of their golden era.His women were as remarkable as his adventures: Fiona, the druidess with mystical powers; Deirdre, beautiful victim of a Norse invader's brutal lust; Gormlaith, six-foot, red-haired goddess of sensuality.Set against the barbaric splendors of the tenth century, this is a story rich in truth and legend-in which friends become deadly enemies, bedrooms turn into battlefields, and dreams of glory are finally fulfilled. Morgan Llywelyn has written one of the greatest novels of Irish history.

I'm nominating this to give Shogun something to go up against. LOL (just kidding - sorta) This looks like a really interesting story and I would love to read something set in Ireland, which is one of the places I'm dying to visit someday.

message 18: by Fiona (new)

1356469 Ooooh that does sound goood.

message 19: by Heather, Poof! I'm a mod. (new)

1412137 Fiona (tweety) vs. Fiona (druidess)

message 20: by Lyn M (new)

2124637 Wow Heather. I have to add that to my TBR. It looks great.

message 21: by Heather, Poof! I'm a mod. (new)

1412137 I'm trying to remember how I heard of that one. It was either from browsing here on GR or on B&N. Anyway, it does look good, doesn't it?!

message 22: by Lyn M (last edited Nov 03, 2009 01:04PM) (new)

2124637 Are you in the History of Royals group? I think it was mentioned in one of their threads. But it looks so good.

A little more background on Shogun. It is based on a real historical figure named Samurai William, who was an Englishman washed up on the shores in Japan, and is credited for helping to open trade to the area.

message 23: by Heather, Poof! I'm a mod. (new)

1412137 Is that the group you are co-mod-ing with Jennifer?

message 24: by Lyn M (new)

2124637 Yes it is.

message 25: by Heather, Poof! I'm a mod. (new)

1412137 Yes, I'm in that one. Still trying to work my way through the discussions over there. I've only hit a couple so far. Looks like a great group though! I'm really excited about it :)

message 26: by Lyn M (last edited Nov 03, 2009 01:08PM) (new)

2124637 We're hoping it goes pretty well. Glad you are there.

message 27: by Heather, Poof! I'm a mod. (new)

1412137 Thanks, Lyn! :)

message 28: by Allison, Alli-san (last edited Nov 03, 2009 11:22PM) (new)

1637878 I have a new author discovery, and I am IN. LOVE.

Gwen Bristow

by new I mean new to me, she wrote in the 60s and 70s I believe.

So, even though this probably won't win, I want to bring you guys' attention to her, hopefully you'll find a book or two of hers in a thrift store someday, remember that I recommended them, and pick one up!

so far, my favorite of hers is Celia Garth...so that is my nom. It takes place (mostly) in Charleston during the Revolutionary War and it is very captivating. She has a way of telling a story from a different POV then one normally gets. For instance, another of her books, Calico Palace, takes place during the California gold rush, but her characters were all San Franciscans in 1848 before the gold rush actually hit, so they got in on things early.

Anyway...just a great great HF author. :)

2429330 Sounds good Allison!

message 31: by Lyn M (new)

2124637 Thanks Allison, I am checking her out.

You always manage to wreak havoc on my TBR, Allison...lol. And I love you for it! :) Just added this one to check out.

Been missing you, girl!

message 33: by Jon (new)

1828558 Thorn birds! ...wait no.. lol. im giving up on that :)

People of the Book

an intricate, ambitious novel that traces the journey of a rare illuminated Hebrew manuscript from convivencia Spain to the ruins of Sarajevo, from the Silver Age of Venice to the sunburned rock faces of northern Australia.

Inspired by the true story of a mysterious codex known as the Sarajevo Haggadah, People of the Book is a sweeping adventure through five centuries of history. From its creation in Muslim-ruled, medieval Spain, the illuminated manuscript makes a series of perilous journeys: through Inquisition-era Venice, fin-de-siecle Vienna, and the Nazi sacking of Sarajevo.

message 34: by Heather, Poof! I'm a mod. (new)

1412137 Nice nom, Jon! I've been wanting to read that one. Uh oh, now I'm not so sure what I will vote for. :/ I would love to read ALL the books that have been mentioned so far....all whopping 4 of them. LOL

message 35: by JG (new)

48404 I really enjoyed People of the Book, Jon. Great nom!

But Shogun will get my vote. I need the courage of company to tackle that monster.

message 36: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 I'll be voting for Shogun as well, even though if it wins I won't be reading it until December (the latter half of the group read time frame) as I'm going out of town for Thanksgiving and I plan on only bringing "light" books.

And even then it will be pushed back if the library gets Under The Dome in quickly.

message 37: by Lyn M (new)

2124637 Jon - People of the book is fantastic. One of my top 10 reads this year.

message 38: by Jon (new)

1828558 ive got people of the book and shogun out of the library so plan on tackling both anyway i think, i couldnt get hold of pillars.

message 39: by Lyn M (new)

2124637 Ya - I ended up not getting to Pillars myself. Got bogged down in too many other things, unfortunately. Both People of the Book and Shogun are good, though. Hope you enjoy them.

message 40: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 Nominations are done, and the poll is up until the 11th.

Go on and vote (for Shogun)! :P

(It's really, really, really good!)

message 41: by Fiona (last edited Nov 09, 2009 02:19AM) (new)

1356469 People of the Book? Now who nominated that? :P Besides, I haven't even got it... :(

message 42: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 Jon nom'd that one.

message 43: by Heather, Poof! I'm a mod. (new)

1412137 I can't decide what to vote for!!!!!

message 44: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 SSSSSHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOGGGGGGUUUUUNNNNN.

message 45: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 No pressure.

message 46: by Fiona (new)

1356469 None whatsoever.

message 47: by Heather, Poof! I'm a mod. (new)

1412137 That's what I ended up voting for :)

I would have felt like a traitor if I didn't... yeah, no pressure whatsoever...LOL! (j/k)

message 48: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 It's really so, so good. I mean, I am sitting here at work wondering what is happening without me!

The characters are all interesting and real, and I can't tell who is good or bad, and I LOVE when characters are complex and interesting and aren't just 1 dimensional "good" or "bad" characters.

Think of William or Waleran from Pillars, and then mix them with Tom and Philip and Aliena and Jack all together, and you have something like the complexity of these characters.

That's not a really good analogy, but they are intriguing to me, and I don't know who they are yet, and I am LOVING the journey to find out.

Vote for Shogun.

message 49: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 And I'm not even 1/4 of the way through the story yet. O_O
