2856066 I am searching for something in the YA genre that guys (16yr old and above) would like, possibly as much as The Hunger Games Series which had great action, suspense, etc.

I'm a dad and tried Percy Jackson but am not into Mythology, so it just wasn't great for me; plus I found it more geared towards middle schoolers (which I recognize may be the definition of YA); but I enjoyed HGames so much I wanted to try some other YA books. I've been hesitant to read Harry Potter and Maximum Ride as they both seem a little too fantasy and young for what interests me.

Something like Twilight, which my wife loves, is simply too much romance for what I, and I assume most guys, enjoy.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Heather from this group did send the following (much appreciated):

Looking For Alaska
Rules for Survival
Little Brother
Unwind
The books Hunger and it's sequel Gone by Michael Grant (Lots of action)
Hunger Games and it's sequel Catching Fire

2873699 hey guys this is like the longest comment i am going to make on goodreads lol. Warning every book down there is aimed at teenage boys and people above 15:

1. Have you read cherub by Robert muchamore? they are aimed at teen above 15, the books main themes are suspense, drugs , teenagers undercover, sex and gang fights ect.....
Don’t miss it, it's actually one of the bestsellers, I read them and they are addictive till the last book, you will never get bored.
Cherub, Tome 1 The Recruit (Cherub Bk.1)Class A (Cherub #2)Mad Dogs (Cherub #8)Divine Madness (Cherub #5)The Sleepwalker (Cherub #9)Man vs. Beast (Cherub #6)The Killing (Cherub #4)Maximum Security (Cherub #3)The General (Cherub #10)The Fall (Cherub #7)Brigands M.C. (CHERUB)

2. This trilogy by Patrick Ness is aimed at 14 years old and above, it is as good as the hunger games. There are lot of bad guys, suspense, action, mystery, adventure and wilderness.
The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking, Book 1)The Ask and the Answer (Chaos Walking, Book 2)
1. the knife of never letting go
2. the ask and the answer
3. coming out next year

3. ALL books by Kevin brooks are amazing. all of them have main boys heros. my favorites were the road of the dead and black rabbit summer. They contain stuff like drugs, drinking, murdure, gangs, bullies, and everything, very realistic but good fiction.there are also some supernatural stuff but not fantasy.
Road Of The Dead (Push Fiction)Black Rabbit Summer
all his books are 15 and above.

4.if you are intersted in real real realistic fiction lol for boys then I suggest the kinfe that killed me by Anthony McGowan.
The Knife That Killed Me (Definitions)
It is about knife crime, gangs and prison!
for 16 and above.

2888085 The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer is the first book that pops into my mind that you may like. If I think of any more off the top of my head, I'll post them.

2424743 One of the best places to find good books to read is to check out the ALA (American Library Association) annual lists of award books such as YALSA (Young Adult Library Service Assoc?) award books on the Best Books for Young Adults list or Quick Picks for Reluctant Readers. There is even a Teens Top Ten list which are the best books chosen by teen votes. You can see all of the lists at

1171337 Try Going Bovine. It's really weird, but it's action-packed, funny, and it has a 16-year-old guy narrator.

146608 I lead a book club for teenage boys at my high school. We read <Falling Angels> by Walter Dean Myers, <The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian> by Sherman Alexie, <The Book Thief> and <I Am the Messenger> by Marcus Zusak, <An Abundance of Katherines> by John Green, <Maus I and II> by Art Speigleman and <Sabriel> by Nix. We had great discussions about all of the books. Their favorite might have been <I Am the Messenger.> I was a bit surprised they liked <Sabriel> so much as the protagonist was a strong young woman, but it is very much a dark fantasy. The boys loved Sabriel's spunk, and most went on to read the rest of the Aborsen trilogy on their own. They also loved <The Hunger Games> which they really got excited about reading and discussing.
