1688588 O.K. back to the subject of our book obsession, went to my favorite independant, Copperfields, ended up with two magazine, Amazing book called Masters Gemstones, Collage Journeys,(for my art,of course,) then the night on the computer ordering old Barbara Wood novels I hadn't read yet or want to read again. I think about six of them are coming. Do love the obsession, but, where to start!!!

17642 I agree that I would not want my books to smell like McDonald's hamburgers. That said, I do sort of wish there was more offerings at Barnes Noble. I work my second job in a mall that has a Barnes and Noble and I often go there on my breaks. It would be nice to be able to get something more than an overpriced sandwich that tastes like toothpaste (sorry, Starbucks).

1639357 I think perhaps this could be a win-win(-lose!) if they put a Walmart inside the B&N with a McD's inside that. Kinda like TurDuckHen.

Seattle's Best makes better coffee though. And aren't they owned by Starcrack anyway? ::looks it up:: Yup, they are.

Yes, I was a very conscientious Starcrack boycotter (is that word?) and only went to local shops, except for Seattle's coffee. Was quite proud of the fact that that was the only large chain store I went to. Then I found out they are owned by the big SBs. <sigh> Now I just go to Seattle's Best cause their coffee is better. You just can't win sometimes.

388170 I realize McDonald in B&N is a joke but reading Sean's "McBooks" comment got me thinking about all of the authors whose names start with "Mc" like McCaffrey, McDowell, and yes even McDonald.

Thanks Sean.

But, McDonalds in book stores would never happen. Face it people. If you buy books you have better taste. Besides, I haven't seen a bookstore without a coffee shop (except in a indoor mall) in years. I thought there might be a law against having a bookstore without a coffee shop now. Beware the powerful Coffee Lobby in Washington!

It would have been extreemly funny if Bill Ackman simply protested this ficticious legal requirement and seen where it would go.

182904 I love that some B&N Starbucks Cafes serve food. I wish more of them did that. I prefer Borders, but all they have at their Seattle's Best cafes are pastries and the occasional bagel.

737497 McDonals seem to turn up in the strangest of places. These days they're even in Russia.

Generally, I always enjoy a good coffee shop inside a book store. "Borders" usually accommodate this one quite well.

The aroma of coffee in a book store, certainly beats the smell of burgers & Bacon!!

182904 I edited my original post 2 days afterwards (on 4/3/08). It was a joke. I confirmed this with the editor of shelfawareness.com.

Sorry for the miscommunication. Next time I'll add to the string rather than modify my post.

422358 My info came directly from my publisher. I'm not exactly sure how the corporate structure shakes out, but that's the gist of it. Oh well, my publisher just made a deal with the largest bookseller in Canada to carry their stuff, so maybe that will help.

284562 I am not a fan of B&N (Amazon for the win) but where do you get your information? I'll be happy to pass on the message with a bit of evidence.

422358 Why not burger king, Pizza hut, Domino's, and Suds and Duds? Be great to have a beer, eat some pizza, get sauce all over B & N's stock, all while the laundry gets dried. B & N is doing it's best to shut out new authors and small publishers, I won't shop there. I wish nobody would. They bought a printing and publishing concern, now they don't want to carry books from the smaller publishers. They have to carry the stuff by the big houses. Aren't people tired of the big chains and big houses deciding what is made available and what isn't? Boycott B & N, then we'll start on the next one. Lets make the point they're not going to tell us what we can and cannot read.

544805 Mmmm...McBooks.

I like the Starbucks in B&N. I would hate it if there was a McDonalds because people would just come for the McDonalds and it would be a lot louder and more crowded. I really wouldn't want that!

870459 Mmmmmm, Schlotzky's would be a very yummy addition to Barnes&Noble. Now I'm hungry.

message 5: by Robbie (new)

1197637 Schlotzky's would make sense, actually...a deli chain of some sort, yes. But not McDonald's it's too messy, loud, smelly, etc.

message 4: by Nicole (new)

182904 A friend of mine accused me of this being an April Fools joke. I don't think it is, but maybe it is? It seemed so real! I'll repost if it is indeed a joke. I hope it is!

message 3: by Theresa (new)

925476 Why McDonalds? Why not a company like Schlotzsky's that is a little nicer?

I don't eat at McDonalds anymore, but when I did, I never went in because it stinks like grease, kids loiter there and make lots of noise (man, I sound old when I say that), and the cooks/cashiers are loud.

129343 Agreed. That's just weird. Never in a million years would I have paired B&N with McD's. And you're right...goodbye, wonderful new book smell!

182904 ***NOT MY JOKE, BUT A JOKE BY THE EDITOR IN CHIEF OF SHELF AWARENESS. thank goodness!

This is from this morning's issue of ShelfAwareness.com:

From interview with Bill Ackman, founder and managing partner of Pershing Square Capital Management, which is the largest shareholder of Borders and second-largest at B&N.

What plans do you have for B&N?

"Several things come to mind. We've noted that B&N and its cafes might appeal to a broader audience were they to serve fare that was more popular than, for example, panini and lattes. In that spirit, we have facilitated initial discussions between McDonald's and B&N for the bookseller to begin converting cafes to McDonald's."

**I’m sorry, but REALLY!? McDonald’s inside a B&N? I just think that’s kinda foul. All the books would smell like fry grease!
