This is the place to share the titles and your thoughts on the books you've won in Goodreads Giveaway contests.
I joined Goodreads in February 2009 and within weeks won my first giveaway. In fact I won 4 books within the first 3 months of joining. I won:
The Year of Pleasures A Novel by Elizabeth Berg - I've reviewed this on our Bookmarks Any Issue 2005 thread.
Michal A Novel by Jill Eileen Smith
[The Dalai Lama's Little Book of Inner Peace The Essential Life and Teachings by Dalai Lama XIV
Cursed by Carol Higgins ClarkI've just won my fifth book:
Half Moon Henry Hudson and the Voyage that Redrew the Map of the New World by Douglas Hunter
I joined Goodreads in December 2008 and have won 9 books so far...some have been great, others not so much!Newly won, to read:
Half Moon Henry Hudson and the Voyage that Redrew the Map of the New World, by Douglas Hunter
A Separate Country, by Robert Hicks
Read and enjoyed very much:
Strength in What Remains A Journey of Remembrance and Forgiveness, by Tracy Kidder
Gertruda's Oath A Child, a Promise, and a Heroic Escape During World War II, by Ram Oren
The Lace Makers of Glenmara, by Heather Barbieri
Won, but never arrived in my mailbox:
Sworn to Silence, by Linda Castillo
Read, just okay:
No Time to Wave Goodbye A Novel, by Jacquelyn Mitchard
And two that I got were stinkers, won't even mention them...
I just joined in July 2009, and have won one giveaway,
. I only received it last week, so I will be reading it soon. It looks excellent!
Wow Lynn! You've really been lucky. We'll have to compare notes on Half Moon. I'd like to read The Lace Makers and Strength in What Remains. BTW, Strength in What Remains is reviewed in the Nov/Dec 2009 issue of Bookmarks, so I know you will be starting a thread on it *hint, hint*. Barb, I'm anxious to hear your thoughts on The Concubine's Daughter. It sounds interesting.
April wrote: "How do you "win" books? Just by being active? Do they notify you? "April, you need to click on "explore," then click on "books." There is a section on books called "giveaways." Select books from this section, which you would like to win. You have to enter some personal info, name, address, etc. You will be notified by email if you win. You are encouraged to post a review of any book you win. This probably improves your chances of winning again, although my initial wins came so quickly, I hadn't even received some of my books before winning again.
Thanks Lisa.Lisa wrote: "April wrote: "How do you "win" books? Just by being active? Do they notify you? "

I have only won one, but I also keep forgetting to go in and sign up for more. I wondered if they had any rules about not being able to win more than one in a time period, but from the rate some of you have been winning, that must not be the case.

I've never read anything by Andrews, but have often wondered about her books, like Deep Dish and Savannah Blues.

Not sure how that happened!! I think the wins seem to come somehow related to the number of books you review and how active you are posting comments on goodreads...not sure what the formula is, or if there is one, though. I go through the books that are offered about once a week or so and just pick those that sound good. (And I learned to be more picky after getting the two stinkers.)
Mary Kay Andrews falls into what I would consider a guilty pleasure category. I haven't read Fixer Upper yet, but have read Hissy Fit and Savannah Blues. I thought the former better than the latter, but both were entertaining; the writing is clever and quick-witted making for a fun, quick read.
I'm so psyched! I came home from the library with my son today to find a package from Harper Collins at my doorstep. I am a giveaways winner! I didn't even know about this until you posted the thread, so thank you Lisa. I entered a bunch and actually won the book I was really hoping to win: Lit A Memoir. I didn't think I had a chance, with over 350 entries. It's the only thing I've ever won! Ironically enough, I just read a review last night about the book in Book Page. I'm so excited to get started on it.
Thanks, Lisa! With the luck you seem to have at Goodwill, you'll probably find it there soon!!
How do you add that graphic? That's neat!
