The newest, and I believe best, addition to the Stargate franchise. Its got a nice dark and gritty feel, a la BSG, and also has been, and I hope continues to be, continuous where as each ep picks up essentially directly after the last.
I am wondering if we will eventually see any planets inhabited by civilized societies. Although that's not the focus of the show compared to the other two. If we happen to get to that point(which could take 2+ seasons), I hope we get to see intriguing non-humanoid races.
I am also tempted to just hold off on watching eps so I can watch them back to back.
I am loving this show! It doesn't have the usual problem/solution all in one neat episode that you expect from Stargate shows. The characters are diverse and, because most of them shouldn't be there, not terribly qualified to do anything. It does have that dark feel to it and with the addition of some nonscored music it is unique.
I hope they continue to write stories in the same vein and don't make it more 'formula'.
I came to the Stargate wourld late. I LOVED the movie, and the first show was good, but it was never on when I could watch. When I finally caught a marathon of Atlantis I was hooked! Thanks to a friend I have now found this one as well and am loving it. I've only scene 1 episode, and had a friend filling in the bits I didn't understand, but it is now a standard on my Friday Night line up!
so i spent Saturday evening in a Stargate Universe marathon.
wow.
there is hope post BSG.
each episode had a good blend of action and story, and the characters are gradually being revealed. as Allen mentioned it has a nice gritty feel to it. there is nothing shiny and bright and clean and morally upright ala Star Trek. this is sci fi alllll grown up with lots of grey areas, lots of moral dilemas and flawed, multi-dimensional characters.
i think we have a winner!
Not much I can add, you've all said it already. It's definitely Friday night standard viewing for me.

i'd like to add - i am s000 glad the senator took 'one for the team' in the very first episode. i don't expect to like all the characters in a show - in fact a show like SGU needs some hard-to-like characters - like Dr. Rush for example. that said, i repeat, i am s0000 glad the senator is NOT going to be a regular.
I was actually a bit disappointed by that. It was a bit cliched like SGA, where the lead military guy(the biggest named actor) died right away. I also thought it was goin to happen again on SGU, but was glad when the Colonel(or whatever) got better.
Oh, and they really need to stop with the angsty sex/love scenes, I don't want to see another Defying Gravity.

didn't know that was classic Stargate mode de operandi - being a newbie to Stargate. still the senator was just too annoying to live. :)
I didn't like the senator either. Had he lived, he'd probably have entitlement issues and want to play ruler.
I definitely like Rush, not in the sense that he's a lovably guy, clearly he is not, but in the way he brings out some harsh but necessary ideas, decisions. I think, over time, Rush and Young will come to work well together and rely on each other. Both have the same goals but come at if from different directions. Should prove to be very interesting. As Teal'c would say: Indeed.

exactly. Rush is an important addition - and not just because he is a brilliant quantium scientist (he is in the quantum physics field right?) but because of his character and what that will naturally bring to the story arc. not a likeable personality perhaps but a great character that enriches the story.
Any thoughts about the last episodes? The last episode was quite good (especially the ending) but the rest of the episodes were quite boring, all that traveling home to talk to ex-wifes and all that stuff.

i couldn't agree more - i understand and agree with the premise that a secondary plot line (off the ship) is a good idea. kind of like what Lost did with the flashbacks, and later, the flash forwards. while i agee in principle, the writers have not done a very good job - the storylines on earth have been boring.
i did like the Dr. Rush development and maybe as they follow his story line and the Destiny storyline they'll spend less time on earth.
