Yeah, she's usually pretty good. I'm actually disappointed that the story is an excerpt from the novel; I don't think that kind of writing (i.e., super-closely observed, glancing, impressionisticm insularly moody) translates well to a novel, generally speaking.
And I go back and forth on Moore. The first time I read 'Self-Help,' I really liked it; the second time, quite a bit less so. And at a distance of several years, I don't remember a single story from 'Birds of America.'
I also enjoyed the Moore story (an excerpt from her new novel, I think), but when was the last time that Moore wrote something I didn't like?
As someone who's complained a lot (here and elsewhere) about the fiction published by the 'New Yorker,' I wanted to say in a similarly public way that I just read Lorrie Moore's "Childcare," from the July 6/13 'New Yorker,' and thought it was the best thing they've printed in a couple years. Wondering what others might have thought. (Sorry I'm out of date--I share my subscription with a friend and get the issues whenever he decides to stack and hand them over.)
