2426596 I'm working on About a Boy and reading Impossible for YA reads.

I saw the movie for About a Boy and now understand why I didn't like it so much. The book is better (thus far, of course) because it's all about Will and Marcus' thoughts. Or at least what I've read anyway.

I have Coraline and Cirque Du Freak in the wings.

I can't wait to get this ticker moving!

1410203 If you get your hands on a copy of this book *the guide itself* I bet you will be able to move that ticker pretty far. My copy is at school and I have been home sick for a week. I KNOW I have read AT LEAST 50 books already, and more since I started the group. I highlighted each book I have read, so I just need to go through and do a count.

Like I said, many books you have done in your group are in this guide. :)

2426596 I have the guide sitting on my coffee table. I'm just reading more exciting things like Reading Don't Fix No Chevy's by Jeff Wilhelm and Michael Smith in preparation for my comps this weekend. My friends keep asking how I'm celebrating the end of comps. Sadly, my celebration is snuggling up on the couch with reading I want to do and The Ultimate Teen Book Guide. (I know, I know - that's the nerdy answer but it's what I want to do.)

2426596

I took a study break, and I went through the A's in the Ultimate Guide and found that I've read 8 of them.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
Certainly not one of my favorites. It's probably unAmerican to say this, but I'm not a fan of Twain.

Al Capone Does My Shirts
I found the premise interesting - especially because I read it after visiting Alcatraz. The writing was a little pedestrian. I would like to read Al Capone Shines My Shoes though.

The Alchemist
I LOVED this books. I've since read almost all of Coelho's other books. He's a fantastic writer.

All-American Girl (All-American Girl, #1)
I just love Meg Cabot. Her writing is fresh and fun. This one didn't disappoint. A great beach read!

America
I read this for a doctoral class on Reader Response Theory (all hail, Louise Rosenblatt!). This book generated so much discussion. It's dark. It's disturbing. It's not a book I put in my class library because I felt it was too mature. Regardless of the content, I'm glad I read it.

American Born Chinese
I love the blending of three different stories. The graphic novel format makes this very appealing to my students. In fact, I think it got stolen last year. HMMMM-

Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging Confessions of Georgia Nicolson (Confessions of Georgia Nicolson Book 1)
I love this book. It's Bridget Jones for the teen set. I also like that it's a series.

Animal Farm
Read it in high school and college. I love the layers within this book.

My next study break will bring the B's to my list.

1410203 I COMPLETELY dislike Huck Finn.

1989238 I just read the title of your thread Cherylann. I love it. You should assign yourself this title on the YA group.

message 8: by Cherylann (new)

2426596 Maybe I will. I don't want to sound too braggy - although everyone needs to be a goddess now and then. You and Stephanie already say enough kind things that go to my head, so I figured I was "safe" here.

message 9: by Stephanie Anne (new)

1410203 HAHAHA. I call myself THE QUEEN BEE for Busy as a Bee Books. It's all in good fun!

message 10: by Cherylann (new)

2426596 Well, knowing your personality, it is all in good fun. The YA group has some intense people who may not "get it".

2426596 About a Boy
I really liked this one - although I don't consider it YA.

Give a Boy a Gun, The Giver (The Giver, #1), Go Ask Alice, Godless, Gone With The Wind, The Great Gatsby, Hamlet, The Handmaid's Tale,
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter, #1)
I read the first Harry Potter, and that was enough for me. I don't get the fuss about this series.
Hatchet, Heart of Darkness (Green Integer), Heroes, Holes, Homecoming (Tillerman Family, #1), Hoot, Hope Was Here, The House of the Scorpion, The House of the Spirits, The House on Mango Street

2426596 I've just been told my current stats bring me to approximately 20% of the guide- thanks for the quick math, Bill!

message 20: by Cherylann (new)

2426596 Coraline brings me to 142!

Starting Cirque du Freak: A Living Nightmare and needing to get Arabella from the library.

message 21: by Stephanie Anne (new)

1410203 Dang, girl. You have me beat now and I was all proud of my fish swimming a little. :)

BUT, I start Family Medical Leave for 12 wks on Monday the 26th, so you're all in for some serious trouble! Especially the seasonal challenge people! I can do some serious catching up!

message 22: by Cherylann (new)

2426596 I couldn't believe I had read so many of these books!

I hope the Family Medical Leave is for a baby reader and not your fibro. (I knocked out a book and a half today home with sinus infection and fever - I can't imagine what you can do in 12 weeks.) Happy reading!

message 23: by Stephanie Anne (last edited Oct 16, 2009 03:12PM) (new)

1410203 No baby readers yet! We just got married last summer and although we have known each other for 7 years, we want time together before babies! We're thinking 2-3 more years. We have some big trips planned. Believe me, when babies are a'comin I will let my GR family know. :) And I will be reading to my belly as soon as I know it can hear me. :)

So this is just fibro and sick all of the time leave. My body is not fighting much of anything right now. I am picking up everything the kids are bringing in, and the fibro just makes everything worse and longer. I have some big plans though for a major exercise regime, doctors' appts, sleep studies, etc. I know I will be reading a lot. :) ...and playing my Nintendo DS. I am still a kid in some ways. :)

message 24: by Cherylann (new)

2426596 Stephanie, I figured you would have shared baby readers with us. I was hoping it wasn't the fibro so I went for happy news. Sorry to hear this has been a rough year for you health-wise. I'll keep you in my prayers - and pray that you don't surpass me on the Ultimate challenge; I am a competitive girl after all ;) I'm looking forward to your posts about everything you read.

message 25: by Stephanie Anne (new)

1410203 Thank you for your thoughtful words. It has been a rough year, but I am very optimistic and I know I made the right decision even though it was a tough one. Things will get better! I will be reading and posting more, so I guess that is a good thing. I need to keep my mind stimulated b/c I won't have 100+ teens forcing me to do so everyday!

message 26: by Cherylann (new)

2426596 I finished Cirque du Freak. Part of me wants to read more in the series like Kari, and part of me wants to move on because there's so much to read. I feel like I'm "sampling". I'll probably read more if this becomes a popular book with my students.

message 27: by Cherylann (new)

2426596 Arabella

Finally finished the October reads! Check out my review of the book for more commentary.
