2045970 Lauren: My son didn't realize how many people were unaware (or refused to admit to themselves) what was happening at the camps. So, the mother's reaction when she realized what the smell was and continued marital/emotional decline did not make sense to him. On that same note, he had a hard time understanding that Bruno was really, truly confused. He kept thinking the kid should know more than he did.

I do have to say, this was a great movie to follow-up with a conversation about the mindset of the German people at the time.

I think I would like to read the book.

It's great that young children are made aware of the Holocaust through film. That's what I admired about the book, which is definitely more orientated towards children, although it is never explicit in what's going on (not sure if that's a good or a bad thing).

2045970 Just watched "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" Friday with my son. We both liked it. But, I think I did more than he did. Partly because he doesn't understand enough about the Holocaust. I make him watch all the genocide movies, but he doesn't always "get" the finer points. I had to explain some things afterwards but by then effect from the movie had already happened. The end was so sad. The mother's response finally tipped me over the edge from sad to a waterfall.

243419 I thought the Counterfeiters was good, if not entirely accurate on the particular subject. I really did like the Pianist though.

299646 no worries, sometimes threads are hard to find here. i only mentioned it because i thought you might enjoy reading some other comments on it.

yeah, everything is illuminated was a nice movie and I've browsed the book in bookstores. i don't know if either of these films are my favorite films on the holocaust, there have been a few good works, but it's a difficult subject to deal with. did you see the counterfeiters? that was a good recent film on the subject. i also thought polanski's the pianist was good, but perhaps my favorite is de sica's "in the garden of the finzi-continis".

1259216 Thank you, George and Phillip.

Phillip: I couldn't find the other thread here about this movie.

George: Below is a link to the Netflix description of the movie you mentioned:

I've put it on my Netflix queue. I might view it by streaming. Thanks for mentioning it.

Netflix says that the movie is based on the book:
_Everything Is Illuminated A Novel_ by Jonathan Safran Foer

243419 To me, it's an interesting addition to the Holocaust genre. It's more allegorical than realistic though. very poignant in any case. If you're interested in the Holocaust, I'd recommend the recent film, Everything is Illuminated, which I found to be the better film.

Yes, Mawgojzeta, I'd be interested in your comments. Thanks.

Lauren, I haven't read the book. I don't think I want to repeat that sadness again.

1259216 What did you think of the film: "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" (2008)?

It was a terribly sad film. After all these years I'm still shocked when I think back on those years.
