939365 I've tried to pick it up a few times but the back blurb always makes me pass it over for something else for some reason. I like a good cry read, I'll have to move it up the hill :)

message 152: by Sherri (new)

1708674 Eastofoz - Pleasures of the Night was one of the few books that was so good it made me cry! Enjoy it!

message 151: by Eastofoz (new)

939365 Sherri, I'd totally agree for Ransom --great book. I have Pleasures of the Night on TBR --good to know it has a good alpha :D

message 150: by Sherri (new)

1708674 Brodick from Ransom (Julie Garwood)
Valerian from The Nymph King (Gena Showalter)
Gabe from To Die For (Cindy Gerard)
Aidan from Pleasures of the Night (Sylvia Day)

plus all the many others already mentioned!

886675 Chasidy wrote: "Bones, need I say more?"

You are sooo right!:D

message 148: by Chasidy (new)

1386709 Bones, need I say more?

message 147: by Kathrynn (new)

669573 I second you on both of those nominations, Auntee. Wow!

message 146: by Auntee (new)

886675 Okay, Nicholas Kenleigh from Pamela Clare's Ride the Fire--this guy can have his torso sliced open by the Indians and then have a flaming torch inserted, and live to tell about it. Ride the Fire (Blakewell/Kenleigh Family Trilogy, #3)

Also Iain MacKinnon from P. Clare's Surrender. He can take 100 lashes to his back without making a sound, and carry a woman on his back for miles and miles, as if she weighs no more than a feather.
Surrender (MacKinnons Rangers Trilogy, #1)

message 145: by Eastofoz (new)

939365 Lucien Balfour from Suzanne Enoch's REFORMING A RAKE --now there's some excellent verbal sparring!

message 144: by Diane "Candy" (new)

1252287 Hi

In my opinion, for alpha heroes who are REALLY alpha.....look to the books of Rowena Cherry.
I have really enjoyed her books and can't wait for the next one to come out.

Some really good examples of the alpha heroes would be Djohn-Kronos in Mating Net,
Tarrant-Arragon in Forced Mate
Djetth in Insufficient Mating Material and
Rhett in Knight's Fork.

1320046 Hi Laurie!

I am going to be reading His Perfect Submissive very soon, I have heard great things about it!

message 142: by Rowena (new)

717257 Hi, Julie,

Rejar traveled back to Regency times. It is set in 1811. It says so on the logline of the first page.

Best wishes,
Rowena Cherry

939365 Welcome to the group Laurie and thanks for your recs :) Sarah McCarty certainly writes a great hero! I liked SAM'S CREED better than CAINE'S RECKONING and I've read PROMISES LINGER --bought the rest of the series right after (lol!) I haven't heard of some of the other authors you've mentioned but I'll have to check them out :)

message 140: by Laurie (new)

838527 I'm new to this group--just started reading the threads a few days ago.

I've added some of your suggestions to my list to prowl for...Kindle one click ordering...look out...here I come.

Here are a few of my favorite Alphas.

I love Slade in His Perfect Submissive by Alyssa Aaron. He is alpha...definitely...but is also very caring, very loving, he takes his commitments seriously even when they don't turn out to be the fun and games he thought. He is my creation so I suppose it only natural he would be my kind of guy.

I love Sarah McCarty's heroes. Her early books were with Ellora's Cave where she has The Promises Series...Promises Linger, Promises Prevail, and another promises title I can't remember right now.

Sarah has a new series...Hell's Eight. I have read Cain's Reckoning and have Sam's story...can't rememeber the title in my pile to be read. Cain is great. Both alpha and like Slade, caring.

I like the heroes created by Richard Savage as well. His stories are steamy hot. (Temporally Yours and The Key, The Anniversary which is one of the stories in The Crimson Z). His characters are alphas to the core...yet...they are not the sort of alpha that forces things to his way...more very good at cajoling.

Robert Cloud's hero in Toy's Story Acquisition of a Sex Toy is one of the more tortured and deeply drawn alpha heroes I've read. It is a hard core BDSM story though, so not for the faint of heart.

His Perfect Submissive
Caine's Reckoning
Promises Linger
Sam's Creed
Promises Keep
Temporally Yours & The Key
The Crimson Z
Toy's Story: Acquisition of a Sex Toy

939365 I don't know what I would do without GR and all the recs I get to read certain books that I'd probably never pick up, so you're welcome new_user glad to "help" :D

message 138: by new_user (new)

1365355 Ahem. *muttering* Note to self, read London's Perfect Scoundrel. Thanks for the heads up, East.

And to the list, I'm going to add Judd Lauren from Caressed By Ice. I was woefully mistaken when I said Singh couldn't write an alpha hero. LOL. Woefully mistaken.

message 137: by Eastofoz (last edited Nov 23, 2008 03:35PM) (new)

939365 Valentine Corbett the Marquis of Deverill in Suzanne Enoch's Sin and Sensibility --the love scene in this book just killed me 8)

Michael the Marquis of St Aubyn in Suzanne Enoch's London's Perfect Scoundrel --the best whispering blackmailer to get what he wants from the heroine 8)

message 136: by Elaine (new)

1301782 Tammy, Mr Perfect is one my favorite romances and if Open Season is similar, I'll be sure to enjoy it.

BTW, I've been having probs with the GoodReads site - couldn't get my posts online and I had to post several times, not even knowing if it showed. So if you see more repeat posts, you all know why.

message 135: by Tammy (new)

785960 Elaine, you will LOVE Open Season if you like romantic suspense with a twist of comedy! Open Season and Mr. Perfect are two of my favorite books. =)

message 134: by Elaine (new)

1301782 I haven't read Open Season but that book keeps popping up. Must be good.

message 133: by Elaine (new)

1301782 I keep seeing Howard's Open Season whenever a fav book or hero is discussed. That's one lH I haven't read yet so I've added it to my To Buy list.

message 132: by Eastofoz (new)

939365 Tammy ya know me well! "Jack" it is :D LOVED that book :D :D

message 131: by new_user (new)

1365355 LOL, Tammy, yeah, I meant Lora Leigh. Count me as a fan of uber-alpha then. ;) That's always been my definition of alpha.

message 130: by Tammy (new)

785960 New User, are you referring to Lora Leigh? Leigh doesn't just write good alphas, she writes uber-alphas! I've liked most of her books.

East, I think you're referring to Jack in Open Season. Jack is awesome - one of Howard's best. I know you liked that book as much as I did! =)

And now I'm going to have to add Kev Merripen to this list after reading Lisa Kleypas's new book (and Cam Rohan too, for that matter - if he hasn't already been added!)

message 129: by new_user (new)

1365355 Leigh writes some good alpha. Yup. :D

message 128: by Auntee (new)

886675 Count me in too!:D

message 127: by Pamela (new)

884792 Kathrynn, I liked him alot too.

message 126: by Kathrynn (new)

669573 I really liked Nathan Malone AKA Noah Blake in Wild Card. What a story.

message 125: by new_user (new)

1365355 I've been meaning to try LoS, but I saw mixed reviews so I've been dragging my feet, lol. Especially with the recent slew of awful bride-captive stories I've been reading lately (The Game was an exception because the hero was actually sweet most of the time).

I'm trying Brockmann's Gone Too Far right now. Not bad, but I have to say I don't consider Sam very alpha. I guess my idea of it's quite different, lol.

message 124: by Eastofoz (new)

939365 Ooooo Sebastian! Loved him and whatshisface from OPEN SEASON :D

Elaine I haven't been adventurous enough to give IN DEATH a try yet so it's still stewing on TBR (lol!)

message 123: by Sherri (new)

1519005 Sebastian from Loretta Chase's LORD OF SCOUNDREL'S has to be one of my all time favorites.

message 122: by Elaine (new)

1301782 I keep seeing LH's Open Season whenever a favorite hero or romance is discussed. I thought I'd bought it (though not read) but I don't so that's one more to add to my To Buy list.

message 121: by Elaine (new)

1301782 Inky, if they hate the series, there's still me. I LOVE every book I've read so far even that's just four of them. I'm deliberately pacing myself.

It helps to read Nora Roberts' comments on the Dear Author blog about her writing this series. There'rr spoilers in the blog reviews and comments so for those who hate spoilers, here's just NR's comments:
==================================================
Nora Roberts says:

Thank you for the review. (See I read the previous article.)

I do hear what you’re saying about some repetition. That’s the strange, slippery line navigated in a long-running series–for me anyway. Trying to keep it fresh for the long-time reader and make it clear for the new one. It’s a struggle. Frankly, I’m not sure what to do about it–and I think about it every book.

Please note–I really did read the previous article and the comments–this isn’t an excuse, justification, argument.

I also agree we need to beef up the furturistic stuff now and then. I think I did that in the last book I finished. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to see that for awhile, but I do think I’d let that aspect wane somewhat.

February 19th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
==================================================

It made all the difference to me to have come prepared before starting the series. It's important to remember very little time has passed between one book and the next as far as the characters are concerned. Even more important is Ms Roberts' having to grapple with people who start the series out of order and really, IMO, this is one series you just shouldn't do that with if you're going to read it at all.\

Is there sex? Yes, there's plenty of sex between Roarke and Eve. Just don't expect graphic descriptions. Did I miss them? Not at all. Enough sexual chemistry between R & E to set me on fire without explicit scenes and I felt ever long stroke of Roarke's without having to be told he has a Cannon, Auntee.

message 120: by Eyre (new)

1368724 Roarke makes my toes curl(in a good way), and my tummy gets a fluttery feeling when I think about him. LOL!

Long hair, Irish accent, just delicious all around . . .

message 119: by Elaine (new)

1301782 Eastofoz, I'm a few pages from finishing Book 4, Rapture in Death. I SO love this series but I'm also glad I waited till now to start it. Means I've got 20-something left to read.

message 118: by Elaine (new)

1301782 Aahhh...it's Roarke for me ALL the way. I'm right into the In Death series right now and NO OTHER hero comes close except for...Gennita Low's Jed McNeil. It's a pity her COS Commando series (which she did model after Roarke's and Eve's relationship) is so long in getting published but, having met Jed way back from Facing Fear, the man's had a special place in my heart. I could see the similarity in Roarke the minute I met Roarke in Naked in Death.

message 117: by Eastofoz (new)

939365 Thanks for the info Kathrynn :)

message 116: by new_user (new)

1365355 Wow, for some reason I didn't realize you could just number the books yourself, lol.

And I have to amend what I said about Brenda Joyce. I just finished The Game, and Liam O'Neill is definitely an awesome alpha, lol. *dreamy*

message 115: by Kathrynn (last edited Sep 28, 2008 06:51AM) (new)

669573 Yes, it's a cool relatively new feature on this Site. Before you can order, East, you need to go to edit shelves and turn on "enable ordering" for each shelf you want to...well...enable ordering. ;-)

Also, when looking at your shelves, must be in "main" view to see the ordering and move things around.

Play around with it, but should be able to:
1. Move something to the top with one click
2. Edit the numbering of several books at one time and then click "reorganize shelf" and your edited numbering will take effect
3. Move individual books up or down one click at a time. (I found this particular feature to be a real pain in the butt).

Let us know if you have any problems or questions. It took me awhile to get the hang of it. 8-)

I've been ordering my "currently-reading" shelf. Now can order a series in the correct order if you have a specific shelf for that series. And, I've ordered my "to buy" shelf by what's coming out first. Handy feature!

message 114: by Eastofoz (new)

939365 Thanks for the tip :)

message 113: by new_user (new)

1365355 Lol, same here, East. My selection was pretty random back then (er, a few months ago, lol). I'm glad for GR.

You can order your TBR list by going to your to-read shelf and clicking the "order" header on the left with all the numbers (which finally make sense now, lol). Then you're able to move the books up and down or to the top of your list. It's much less painful for me than searching the list for what I should read next.

message 112: by Eastofoz (new)

939365 Auntee thanks for the info :D

New_user how do you "order your lists"? I didn't know that.

Pamela I didn't even know what a TBR pile was before venturing over here 8) (lol!)

message 111: by Pamela (new)

884792 lol, how did we survive years ago without the internet and these boards to help us with our book selections? I can honestly say that my TBR pile was alot smaller :)

message 110: by new_user (last edited Sep 27, 2008 11:42AM) (new)

1365355 *grumbles* Now another one I have to add to my list, lol. I've already added Brockmann and Howard thanks to the suggestions here. :) Thanks for the heads-up, Auntee!

Hey, did you guys know we can order our lists now? Very cool. :D

message 109: by Auntee (last edited Sep 27, 2008 11:11AM) (new)

886675 I just finished a book with an 'uber' alpha hero. His name is Gabriel Jones and he's the hero in Cindy Gerard's latest, Show No Mercy. He gives a whole new meaning to 'tortured hero'!

message 108: by new_user (last edited Sep 27, 2008 11:39AM) (new)

1365355 Let me know if Abe's any good. :) Yep, Dawn is a lesser known but much enjoyed author. I hope her upcoming book doesn't disappoint. That's good to hear, I have the other ICE books on TBR. Oh, btw, if you do decide to read Viehl, I have just two warnings: the first book doesn't have as much romance as later books and two, they have their darker moments, so if you prefer mostly cheerful and pleasant and none of the dark side, steer clear, but if you've read the ICE books, I think you're in the clear, lol.

As to the BDB men, I did like them, but I never really considered them alpha because they didn't really have any aggressive bones in their bodies (except for brief glimpses, I suppose, that doesn't really signify for me, lol). The poor boys, they were each so broken or battered by their miserable histories (and grimly resigned), they might have lived their whole lives without finding any happiness. I don't think they really had it in them to tell anyone else what to do, lol. Too damaged.

Oh, and re: Brenda Joyce, for anyone considering her, I think her Francesca Cahill novels are happily considerably better in quality than her other books, especially for anyone wanting a little dash of mystery/suspense.

message 107: by Eastofoz (new)

939365 New_user, nice list! I've never tried Christina Dodd but I have recently ordered her book A WELL PLEASURED LADY (looks like I made a good choice for a starter--lol!).

I have STRANGER IN MY ARMS and AGAIN THE MAGIC on TBR.

Never heard of Autumn Dawn. Lynn Viehl I've never tried and Shana Abé I've got her book WINTER ROSE or A ROSE IN WINTER I think it's called on TBR.

I'd agree with you about Bastien from ICE STORM. I didn't really like him that much --a bit too unfeeling for my taste. He got better though in the other books :)

I thought all of Ward's BDB were die hard alphas especially Z--just loved his story :D

message 106: by new_user (last edited Sep 19, 2008 07:09PM) (new)

1365355 Curses. My TBR is growing by leaps and bounds because of this thread, lol.

Bastien from Stuart's Black Ice is an aggressive, mostly careless (of the heroine, frequently throughout the book) gamma. Imo, he never redeemed himself or really demonstrated any of the "finer feelings," lol, but I do see some potential in Stuart, particularly since I've heard the hero of the next book is a little more demonstrative, i.e. eventually gives some sign of affection to the poor starved wench, lol. I hope that's true.

The only alpha in Ward's BDB series, imo, is Rehv, and boy, is he alpha. *waggles eyebrows* I'm looking forward to reading his book.

Favorite alphas:
Mr. Remington Knight (I feel like shimmying after saying that) from Christina Dodd's One Kiss From You. Gruff but loveably vulnerable. *tear*
Dougald, Rules of Attraction. He has the nerdiest name (Can you imagine? "Oh Dougald!" Well, they can't all be Sebastians), but he is far from. I like his version of revenge. *leer*
Sebastian (oh, yes, another one! You thought they were done?), A Well Pleasured Lady. I was well-pleased, lol. This one reads like a BBC period drama put to writing, though of course with a modern touch from Dodd and an edgy alpha.
Hunter from Stranger in My Arms by the famed Lisa Kleypas, lol. That's my favorite book from her, and Hunter is everything an alpha should be and still somehow sensitive. It's baffling. He's so sweet and sexy.
McKenna from her Again the Magic is also quite alpha and once again, I ask you, who doesn't like this kind of revenge?
Keilor, Teasing Danger by Autumn Dawn. The h/h have this kind of tug of war between them. The tension!
And finally Lynn Viehl's alpha vampires (especially the latest book, whew).
Also honorable mention for Shana Abe's heroes. Alpha but her books are too short. *grumbles* But so dreamy (literally). Historical romance meets fantasy and edgy.

message 105: by Eastofoz (new)

939365 I have found a new bit of "eye candy" --Brett "Hotwire" Adams from Lucy Monroe's "...AND ABLE". Third book in her mercenary trilogy which is just excellent I might add. This guy is phenomenal! You'll be planning you're next trip to that state just to listen to those guys talk the socks (for starters ;) !) off ya!

message 104: by Sam (new)

228501 Sam from "Mr. Perfect" is very good. Also from Howard's "Kill and Tell" Marc Chastain. Yummy.
