717257 JC,

Harlequin has just launched a new all-e line. It's called Carina Press.

Follow them on Twitter, become a fan on Facebook in order to find links to Carina Press's submission guidelines.

They are looking at everything except children's books and non-fiction, as I recall.

Nophoto-u-25x33 From a bookseller's point of view, whichever publisher you choose make sure they sell on Baker & Taylor and Ingram. If they don't you won't get very many sales at all from independent booksellers.

Also make sure you are giving the standard discount and that the books are returnable. Too many self-published books, even on Ingram, are 15% discount, instead of 40%, and not-returnable. If the book is $16.95 that means I pay $14.40. Very few people (outside of friends and family) are going to risk $14.40 for a book that looks interesting but only has a gross margin of $2.55 and if the book doesn't sell, that's $14.40 gone down the drain when it could have been spent on a guaranteed bestseller and made the bookseller $6.78.

2895161 For what it's worth, Thomas Dunne Books is an eBook publisher associated with Macmillan/St. Martin's Press. I can't tell if they're a separate, contracted entity or a wholly-owned subsidiary. Either way, they seem like a pretty professional outfit.

2689344 Rowena,

Thanks for the info. I'll check out Dorchester next.

717257 Janice,

I'm not really an insider. :-) I did one novella with them in 2005.

Have you submitted your thriller to Dorchester publishing? They have a strong horror and thriller section which may even be expanding.

I think NCP does all types, but they are probably best known for their hot romances.

282555 I work for a tech publisher --O'Reilly Media. We offer ebook versions of most of our titles. Here is our page about the formats and how to access them: http://oreilly.com/ebooks/

We also have an annual conference and blog called Tools of Change discussing future of publishing http://toc.oreilly.com/

2689344 Hi Rowena I am new to the forum but I have been following this discussion. Do you know what, if anything, NCP is looking for currently. Ive been to the website but I really have no idea how current the information there is and I thought maybe you, being an insider, would know. The reason I ask is because I would like to submit a thriller that I've written.

1188030 I've heard good things about them, Rowena. And Amber Quill, also. But I think that one is by invite only. You seem to have your PR down as well. (I've seen your name in a lot of places.) Hope it's translating into tons of sales for you!
:-)

717257 I've been very contented with NCP.
New Concepts Publishing.

My statements come quarterly, and so do my checks. They are small, but my book is a 4 year old electronic short story.

Recently, my e-book has been released as a Kindle.

Contracts are initially for three years, I believe.

1188030 Check out the list of top e-publishers on Preditors and Editors. I think the top three rank like this:

Samhain
Elora's Cave (Cerridwen Press)
Mundania

Now the first two are primarily romance/erotica publishers and that is going to be a huge market in electronic pubs. Mundania does the lot and is a great publisher (but I have to make the disclaimer that I'm pub'd with them so I'm biased, big time)

The order may be off and it may have been updated, but when I need to research anything, I usually start with a preditors and editors search.

Just make sure ANY epublisher has a strict submissions policy, a high rejection rate (shows they are after quality work not just anything) and that the money goet TO the author. You shouldn't have to pay and it shouldn't be easy to get published in e-print any more than in print.

There are a lot of great e-pub houses out there that are legitimate. Look at sample contracts, they should be paying royalties and the percents should run between 30-50 for e-editions and around 15 for print... if not, you can find better.
(that last bit is just opinion again.)

Watch for contracts that want, rights in perpetuity...(forever!) and study good contracts or talk to some experts before you dive into a deal.

1632400 I know very little about this subject as I have never been an Ebook fan. However, my publisher, New Generation Publishing, has just arranged for my second book 'And the Devil Laughed' to come out as an Ebook as well as the paperback. They are still in the process of doing this, so I don't know any details yet. Maybe if you looked them up you could gain more detail.

1608820 I don't mean self-publishing ebook sites like smashwords but actual e-book publishers?

Are there any? Are they genre specific? Where would one find them? I've tried to google it and it's a pretty jumbled mess.
