2286923 People are putting in their bid to ban three of Laurie Halse Anderson's books. Speak,Twisted, and Wintergirls are all in to be put at risk. Most of Laurie Halse Anderson's books deal with hard subject matter, coping with finding your voice after rape, overcoming anorexia, grieving over a lost parent. However, the board is claiming it is for certain segments of the book. The board member that cast the vote said:

"rape victims, children who are emotionally and developmentally immature and those seriously interested in being prepared for college can stick to classics and other works without graphic rape scenes."

"Graphic rape scenes"? What has she been reading, Barney's Easter Egg Hunt? The only thing said was that it hurt and he held her down, I could have guessed that. If that was too "graphic" then they have a lot more books to ban after this. "Stick to classics", spoken like a person who doesn't read any classics. The "classics" can be very violent, people die or get hurt in a more "graphic" manner. Classics (unlike the board) don't hide or sugar coat.

Wintergirls has also been called a "guide" for teens looking to starve themselves. *Rolls eyes* A teen that wants to starve will find a way. The book should not be held back, because someone thinks the information is a bit much. Laurie herself said it best:

“We don’t protect our teenagers by holding back information.”

2712807 Are they serious? I love Speak.
Girls who want to starve themselves aren't going to read a book to find out how, there's tv, internet, magazines. The scenes aren't graphic, i've read some that really are and this one isn't. In classics there's fighting and killing. I agree with you Melzz.

2286923 Thanks, Vivi. Some bans don't go through, and some do. I just hope it goes like Harry Potter's banning goes. People keep trying to axe him and it never works.

2712807 I've only read Speak, so i wouldn't know what to say about the others

D : What the heck? Speak was in no way sort or form too "graphic. You're right, what book are they reading? Definitely not the same books that I've been reading. Goodness, if they ban her books, I'll boycott them. I promise you I will.

Yes, and I'd buy many copies of the books to spread around to everyone I know. The more they try to hide it, the more it will be shown.

You conjured up the spirit of this topic, to influence a course of events that would lead us to talk, in this dead topic.

2712807 i noticed you define many words and stuff

2286923 I don't do it often, just once or twice when people mention that they don't know what I mean.

2254001 You know what? Banning books is idiotic. I mean, dyk that they banned Anne Frank's Diary because it was a "downer?" Or ooh, get a kick out of this one: They banned a puberty book. Why? BECAUSE THEY HAVE INAPROPRIATE PICTURES!!! AND THEY TALK ABOUT PUBERTY!!!! OMG!!!! *fumes now* I mean, people are banning books for stupid reasons and parents feel like heroes after they've banned books. My god you're not a hero if you banned books! I mean, I understand if you want to protect your children and all but there are better ways of protecting your child than banning books. I believe in free speech and banning books is not at all free speech sorry you parents who think you're doing good for every child in the whole world if you think banned books are APROPRIATE!!!!

Sorry. I should control my language. I get extremely mad when I see books taken off the library shelf but still reminding myself that ALA created Banned Books Week when they are still banning books today. D:<

message 25: by Vivi (new)

2712807 Breath BookGeek

You're language isnt bad

message 26: by Ambizzle (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 No I hate it when they ban books. The puberty book thing is funny... xD

message 27: by ♥BookGeek♥, Secret blogger unite!! (Super Awesome) (new)

2254001 I mean, I seriously thought they were going to ban all the puberty books in the world after I heard this. I own the book too, honestly, it's NOT THAT BAD!!!

message 28: by Ambizzle (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 which book? It's a puberty book they're supposed to be like that

message 29: by ♥BookGeek♥, Secret blogger unite!! (Super Awesome) (last edited Oct 20, 2009 06:22PM) (new)

2254001 Ambizzle wrote: "which book? It's a puberty book they're supposed to be like that"

Umm... one sec...

Can't find the title. :(

And I know right? Puberty books aren't puberty books if they aren't like that!

message 30: by Ambizzle (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 lol

I can't believe they banned a puberty book I mean what were they thinking they were accomplishing. By banning that book millions of kids might not know about how things work? Now the pregger teens will increase!

message 31: by Vivi (new)

2712807 XD

message 32: by ♥BookGeek♥, Secret blogger unite!! (Super Awesome) (new)

2254001 They already have sex ed in schools anyways they're going to know soon...

message 33: by Vivi (new)

2712807 parents are gonna want to ban that too

message 34: by ♥BookGeek♥, Secret blogger unite!! (Super Awesome) (new)

2254001 Hey, if they want their teens to have a toaster in the oven I don't care! Let them suffer!

message 35: by Ambizzle (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 Some of my catholic friends don't take sex ed. though.... That is not a fun class. Shudder

message 36: by Vivi (new)

2712807 my health class didn't talk much about that

message 37: by ♥BookGeek♥, Secret blogger unite!! (Super Awesome) (new)

2254001 haha! You have no idea what someone said... I prefer not to say it...

But I'm really pissed because they Banned Anne Frank because it was DEPRESSING!!!! SERIOUSLY PARENTS???? ARE U ANTI-SEMITES OR WHAT????

message 38: by Vivi (new)

2712807 i dont think there are any parents in this group, nobody can answer that, anyone here have a kid?

message 39: by Ambizzle (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 Steph does but she's cool

Vivi wrote: "parents are gonna want to ban that too"

They don't try to ban it so often, because Sex Ed is optional. Any parent can opt their child out if they want. Which is much easier to do then banning.

♥BookGeek♥ wrote: "Hey, if they want their teens to have a toaster in the oven I don't care!"

I don't think that's the motivation though. I think that they believe that the images give them ideas. And the parents would rather children be ignorant, than to have those "ideas".

message 42: by ♥BookGeek♥, Secret blogger unite!! (Super Awesome) (new)

2254001 Personally, when a book is banned I'm always interested. Now I want to read all sorts of banned books!

message 43: by Ambizzle (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 Grrr Melzz why do you have to be so rational about everything!

message 44: by Ambizzle (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 My public library has a read the banned books campaign going on

♥BookGeek♥ wrote: "But I'm really pissed because they Banned Anne Frank because it was DEPRESSING!"

Yeah, that's ridiculous. Luckily, it's probably only a local ban. A worldwide ban would be too hard to attempt with Anne Frank.

♥BookGeek♥ wrote: "Personally, when a book is banned I'm always interested. Now I want to read all sorts of banned books!"

Yeah, there are some lists out there that focus on banned books. A lot of people make it their mission to read many of them.

Because if I weren't, I'd be as irrational as a headless chicken.

Nophoto-f-25x33 Okay then I found a happy medium....

message 48: by Melzz (new)

2286923 X)

message 49: by Vivi (new)

2712807 sometimes when you cut off a chicken's head, it still runs around headless for a few seconds

message 50: by Melzz (new)

2286923 Exactly! That would be me without my rationality.
