East of the Sun and West of the Moon is a Norwegian version of a Scandinavian fairy tales. Most fairy tales, etc., are related to all other ones, so Beauty and the Beast was actually rendered after East of the Sun and West of the Moon was. People who study that kind of stuff have like classifications for it, so like both fairy tales would fall into some category where there are enchanted husbands, etc. LOL I don't know if anything I've said makes any sense.
interesting. thanks Sarah! though in most beauty and the beast retellings they don't go running off to the north do they? these are the only two I know of.
I know. haha The story's a little bit different, isn't it? And by different I think I mean, like, maybe even awkward. I realize that Beauty and the Beast is really unbelievable. But this one's like twice as unbelievable, if that makes any sense. LOL
LOL no it's okay I just reread it, what I said doesn't make any sense. I haven't read East yet, but I have read Sun and Moon. And I really really liked it. But it was weird, you have to admit. Like she sleeps in the same bed as someone that she doesn't even know for months on end and doesn't get overly freaked out by it. Also, initially she agrees to go live alone in the wilderness with a mysterious polar bear. I don't know, that just struck me as sort of awkward, but only because they were elements that I wasn't used to hearing, you know?
yeah. it is odd come to think of it, but I read East so long ago, so when I read Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow I was used to the idea and loved seeing how it was different here and there. I think I like East better though. Maybe because I read it first. Who knows? They're both way good and you should def read East if you liked Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow. xD
I'm pretty sure that this fairy tale has its roots in the story of Cupid and Psyche. And Greek/Roman mythology? Is twisted. Way twisted.
I've had Jessica Day George's retelling for AGES and haven't read it yet. I'm not really a fan of East, though.
But I'm excited for Sarah Beth Durst's retelling, Ice. It's a modern retelling, I think. :-)

that sounds right. it's similar, though not quite the same.Jessica Day George's version is different and I like aspects of it better. you should read it. xD

I'll read it eventually; I don't really have a lot of time and I don't even have it with me.
I'm thinking Sarah Beth Durst's will probably be my favourite; I really liked her first two books, and right now, a contemporary retelling sounds wonderful to me. :-)

well, odd is good in most retold fairy tales, right? after all, if it's not odd some, you'll expect all the twists that are sure to come - and a story without twists isn't any fun.so could you expand on 'odd', please? lol. :P

I really enjoyed this book. It's a Beauty and the Beast retelling. A very similar book is Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow which I also love. um, any comments by others who have read it? I've heard it's also a retelling of East of the Sun and West of the Moon, which I believe is a myth type folk tale thing? correct me if I'm wrong.
