In my view, the essence of rating is just meant comment on how a certain book is oriented towards the mainstream author. Usually that is what I feel when I read a book review column in a newspaper, and happen to read the book may be a few months later. So in my case (also what I have done to my book list here) is to present my personal feeling about the book. It is nice to present it as stars (*) rather than a 1,2,3 status.
