1065053 Watching the VD show, I keep thinking, hey, this is like Twilight. But last night I started reading Twilight again, and it had such a different feel to it. The plot has a lot of similarities, but it has a different tone to it.

message 60: by Lia (new)

2582868 I read Twilight first and then read the older set of books of the Vampire Diaries.

message 59: by Chakara (new)

2887241 If I had have known about the Vampire Diaries series before reading the twilight books i prob would want to read it more I've read the first book in the serires called the Awakening vol.1 it has the cover of the CW charcters which I hate. They really tried to change the main charcter to be more like bella which is boo. I dont want to have Daja vu' so I dont want to spend my money on it. I love Stephine Meyers and her Twilight books but i think it may have ruined VD for me. :(

message 58: by Lia (new)

2582868 Oh, I didn't watch the first few episodes.

message 57: by Kate (new)

1065053 Tyler was her boyfriend at first, then she went to Jeremy. I think Tyler's dad is the mayor.

message 56: by ~♡Katie♡~ (new)

2484386 Lia wrote: "oh....I thought Jermey (Elena's brother) was her boyfriend"

she was with them both at different points

message 55: by Lia (new)

2582868 oh....I thought Jermey (Elena's brother) was her boyfriend

message 54: by Kate (new)

1065053 Tyler is the jock guy who seems like a jerk, also was Vicki's boyfriend.

message 53: by Lia (new)

2582868 Who is Tyler?????

message 52: by Melyssa (new)

1958329 And why has Tyler disappeared from the episodes all of a sudden? Odd.

Twilight was the first ever 'vampire' book I read, but then read Vampire Diaries (and found it to be sooo much better) and couldn't believe how many times Twilight came to my mind while reading that book. After that, I've never believed that Meyer has never picked up a vampire book in her life.

And for the show....I LOVE it! I think Ian Somerhalder was the PERFECT choice for Damon. He's got that character to a 'T', IMO. And Paul Wesley was an excellent pick for Stefan too. Just comparing the book with Stefan on it side by side with the actor that plays Stefan, they look eerily alike, it's great!

message 50: by Heather (new)

2098381 Oh yeah, Mr. Tanner, the history teacher. I'm getting a bit annoyed with the show mispronouncing everyone's name. Maybe its just me though. When I was reading, I pronounced Stefan as Stef-fon and Alaric as A-lair-ick but on the show they say Stef-fan and A-lar-ick.

message 49: by Lia (new)

2582868 Oh.......in the books he was a teacher. I remeber now.

message 48: by Suzie (new)

124285 Kate wrote: "One question. In the last episode, when Stephen is upset, he said that Daman killed Zack, and killed Tanner, and turned Vicki. Who is Tanner?"

Tanner was the football coach.

message 47: by Lia (new)

2582868 I didn't get to watch the 2nd eposode so.......

message 46: by ~♡Katie♡~ (new)

2484386 wasnt it the teacher the one that stefan showed up with his vast knowledge of dates

message 45: by Heather (new)

2098381 Tanner is not a main character.

message 44: by Kate (new)

1065053 It could be, but I didn't think he was a main character

message 43: by Heather (new)

2098381 That guy from the tent in epi 2 wasn't it?

message 42: by Lia (new)

2582868 I have no clue....I'm confused too

message 41: by Kate (new)

1065053 One question. In the last episode, when Stephen is upset, he said that Daman killed Zack, and killed Tanner, and turned Vicki. Who is Tanner?

message 40: by Lia (new)

2582868 Thay are really good!!!!!!

message 39: by ~♡Katie♡~ (new)

2484386 only read the 1st book although i do have them but i have been watching vampire diaries even though its not actually out in england as i watch it online and am totally hooked with it i especially love paul wesley who plays stefan he is georgous great body too, ian somerholden is growing on me every week as he plays damon so well

message 38: by Lia (new)

2582868 The series is better than Twilight! I love the t.v. show, too.

message 37: by Natalee (new)

1499743 Well my daughter started these on Sunday night and is already through the first 3. She loves them and dare I say, she even said they are better than Twilight! Hmmm... I don't know. I think maybe it's just been awhile since she read Twilight.

message 36: by Tatiana (new)

2250020 And the nobel vampire is vegetarian and the "reveal" scenes are almost identical too.

message 35: by Heather (new)

2098381 Similarities to to Twilight are as follows:
Angsty, brooding vampire moves to middle of nowhere and falls for typical girl.
Vampire refuses to be with girl cause he could hurt her.
Vampire gets over his silly angstiness and finally agrees to be with human girl, but now crazy issues keept them in constant drama.
There is a loyal best friend, in love with human girl and human girl continues to string human boy along for her own purposes.
Oh and all things supernatural are facinated by said human girl.
Seeing as VD was written over 10 years prior to Tiwlight, I'm pretty sure SM copied LJ.

message 34: by Heather (new)

2098381 There is no s*x in the series at all. Bloodletting is the vampire's idea of s*x in this series and there is a lot of that going on, especially in the 5th book.

message 33: by Angie, YA lovin mod!! (new)

86285 That book looks hilarious, Nightlight!

message 32: by Natalee (new)

1499743 Awesome, thanks for the info. :-)

Natalee, I've read first 4 VD books. There is absolutely no s@x in them. Not sure about 5th book.

Spoilers to come! Read if you are interested in the similarities between the two books.

Well for some similarities are Edward and Stephan both fall for a high school girl, both don't drink human blood, both Damon and Jacob are part of a love triangle plus (spoilers) both can shift into animals, Both girls (Spoiler alert) Bella and Elena become more than human, in both books vamps can go in the sun, can anyone think of any other?

message 29: by Jill (new)

1698392 Yay, November! You'll have to let us know what you thought of it!

message 28: by Natalee (new)

1499743 It comes out in Nov... I'm going to have to buy it!

message 27: by Jill (new)

1698392 Hey, I'm a Twilight lover and I think that Nightlight thing looks fun! If anyone has been able to get their hands on it, please share!

1499743 Kate wrote: "I think the actor that played Damon would make a better Edward than Rob Pattinson. And I am looking forward to reading the books--the show has gotten me interested. And how do you know Stephenie ..."

I was thinking Stefan would have been a better Edward. I thought the last episode was good... Nice little cliffhanger. If you've read the books, how much sex is there? Are they appropriate for a 13 y/o?

Off subject a bit but... Has anyone seen this Twilight parody, Nightlight A Parody? Sorry to all Twilight lovers but this sounds like fun!

message 25: by Jill (new)

1698392 Totally off-subject, I've never read the Vampire Diaries but I think I will as I'm interested in how it's like Twilight . . . (sorry, long introduction)
Ahem, what I was going to say was that I read an interview a long time ago where Stephenie Meyer said that she'd never even picked up a book about vampires before she wrote Twilight, so she probably didn't steal the idea from LJ Smith.

message 24: by Angie, YA lovin mod!! (new)

86285 The TV series is kind of getting boring to me. The True Blood TV series is for adults... definitely not for YA.

message 23: by Tatiana (new)

2250020 Kate, when you read the first VD book, you will see that similarities are undeniable and hard to overlook

message 22: by Kate (new)

1065053 I think the actor that played Damon would make a better Edward than Rob Pattinson. And I am looking forward to reading the books--the show has gotten me interested. And how do you know Stephenie Meyer had even heard of the Vampire Diaries before she wrote twilight? I read somewhere that there are basically only a few core plots, and everything else is just a combo of them. So in a way, everything has similarities. You can only be so origional.

message 21: by Heather (last edited Sep 30, 2009 02:25PM) (new)

2098381 I love LJ Smith but this is her weakest series. I read them all 10years ago and again with the reprint last year. I enjoyed it but it was nothing amazing. I was surprised to notice that Stephanie Meyer basically stole her entire plot from Smith however, I had forgotten many of the details of Vampire Diaries.
As for the 5th installment to the Vampire Diaries series, it was awful. I adore Smith and Damon was one of my favorite characters but Nightfall was filled with plot holes and inconsistancies. I would hold off on reading it to see if she correctst these errors in the sixth installment.
With all that said, I think the books are better than the show, but that is usually the case. They might as well be night and day.

True Blood is an entertaining show, a lot of nudity in the first season though, just so you know. I personally prefer books which are quick and engaging reads. From my experience, people who haven't read books enjoy the show more. So if you are planning to get to both show and books, you should start with the show IMO.

As for Vampire Diaries, the books were rather average. LJ Smith has other better works.

2489453 Is True Blood good?

message 18: by Cameron (new)

2472214 the series is good. cant wait to watch tonight...... not meaning to diss twilight because i like it but their special effects are way better. and the guys are hotttt. lol

message 17: by Natalee (new)

1499743 I haven't read any of the books but I checked out the first episode w/ my daughter. I thought it was pretty good. And, I'll even say that I think the acting was better on this show than the highly publicized (with higher budget??) True Blood series (which I also enjoy). I was pleasantly surprised.

message 16: by Angie, YA lovin mod!! (new)

86285 I just watched the first episode and thought they did a pretty good job. I think it will be a good season.

THANKYOU, so much!
I'll look into it :)
^_^

message 14: by Bria (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 The Harper Teen website occassionally has some books to read for free. I think the first story, Vampire Diaries: The Awakening, might still be free to read on the site. They haven't had anything interesting to me on there since April though. There are usually 1-2 books available for free, but the catch is you have to read them while online. Just got to the "Browse Inside" section. I think all the books at least have a few pages, maybe chapters you can read before it stops you.

message 13: by Debbie (new)

1945325 No problem. It sounds like she has more books in the works. The 5th book leaves it open to future books.
