on a related note, are there actually any books of lermontov's poetry in english? i've seen a few of his poems in anthologies, but no actual books bearing his name. it seems odd that poet who is considered so major in russia wouldn't have any representation in english.
Turgenov and Gogol are not on the list either, but I guess there are others missing. Possibly lost in the snows?
I read "A Hero of Our Time" last year. I bought it and some Puskin short stories.
I loved it, it was my first foray into the world of Lermontov and I found his use of language exquisite.
Perhaps I am easily pleased but I really felt this descriptions facinating, reminded me of Gogol, but I am not sure exactly why?
The plot might have been common but Lermontov's description of Pechorin through his actions was something new for that time. I'll need to look into his poetry if you say it's actually better than Pushkin.
I read this about ten years ago. I enjoyed it, though can't give you specifics--my memory is not what it once was. I love Lermontov as a poet--better than Pushkin--and he does a decent job as a novelist. I think the story was unremarkable, but the language he used was beautiful. I'm sure it is overlooked because of its rather common plot--an adventure romance that was all too common at the time.
