Our Boys A Perfect Season on the Plains with the Smith Center Redmen by Joe Drape.
I don't normally read sports books, but...this is a terrific story of a small Kansas town's high school team with a long unbroken string of games. The author spent the season getting to know the coaches, the kids, the school, and the community to see just what makes such memorable football.
Four stars.
by Gwen Bristol.
Jubilee Trail is set during the 1840s. The first part of the book chronicles the marriage of Garnet and Oliver on their honeymoon trip from New York City to California, via the Santa Fe Trail. He and his brother Charles are traders using the overland routes from California to St Louis, she’s from a well-to-do New York City family.
The second part of the book concerns her life in California and what she does about Charles, the evil, wicked, mean and bad (and probably all phosphorus inside, to quote) Charles. We also meet the enchanting Florinda, the charming Russian Brute, the sadly drunken Texas, and other characters we'd like to know more about.
At times the writing was a little pedestrian, but overall I really enjoyed Jubilee Trail. Copyright, 1950.

You are right. I can only plea that I typed that one and the following up after being awake all night. Something about lack of sleep equals lack of brain cells.

I'm hoping you mean a sextant because while church officials may help you find Heavan, you need a sextant to find your way on an 1850s sailing ship.
The Girls from Ames A Story of Women and Friendship by Jeffrey Zaslow.
This is a book about women's friendships, based on a specific group of girls who grew up together in Ames, Iowa during the 60's and 70's, but extended to the way other women make and keep friends over the long haul. These women are about the same age as my daughter and I have seen the same type of friendships there.
I didn't read this for any task--or at least I haven't assigned it one yet--but it was such an interesting book I wanted to share it.
A Town Like Alice by Nevil Shute
Jean Paget, a young English woman, was trapped in Malaya in 1942 when the Japanese invaded and with 34 other women and children was subjected to a "death March" to a mythical prison camp. Along the way she met an Aussie prisoner of war who helped them out to his own detriment. Several years after the war, she becomes wealthy and goes back to Malaya to help those who helped her--and thus begins an adventure.
5 stars for part of task 15.8 (Australia)
Lucca by Jens Christian Grondahl.
Lucca is in a car accident and loses her sight. Richard, her surgeon, spends time with her. Both of them talk about their pasts--all of it in a rather dispassionate manner. I'm not sure if this is the author's voice or the translation.
2 stars for part of task 15.8 (Denmark)
Lore of the Witch World by Andre Norton
Collection of 7 stories taking place in Witch World. My favorite is "Falcon Blood".
4 stars for task 25.10
The Fixer Upper A Novel by Mary Kay Andrews
Dempsey's lobbyist boss leaves her holding the bag in a bribery case. Without a job, she takes over flipping the old family house in GA that her father has inherited. I started out really disliking Dempsey, but as the book went on she started improving and growing. She learns a lot of home maintenence skills that I wish I knew how to do.
3 stars for part of task 25.9
Of Human Bondage
I was assigned to read Of Human Bondage fifty years ago, and I found it almost as tedious to read the second time around as I did the first time. Sorting out the life of Philip Carey and his prickly problems (most brought on by himself) just made me glad that this time I would not be graded on the essay to follow. Maugham obviously wants the reader to suffer almost as much as Philip Carey does. And I did.
1 Star for task 5.5
Candy Apple Red by Nancy Bush.
Jane Kelly works as a process server/PI/whatever. She came to Oregon to be with a boy friend, who is now long gone over a difference of opinion about his best friend who killed his family and disappeared. Now the boy friend's back and Jane has been asked by a lawyer to delve into the mystery of the missing Bobby, who also happens to be the son of the richest guy in town.
There are close parallels here with Steffie Plum, although instead of Rex the hamster we have a pug named Binky. Go with the hamster.
This is listed as a fiction in my library, but it has at least as much of a mystery as any Steffie Plum book which are listed as mystery, so take your pick.
2 Stars Read for task 5.2
Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson.
Our heroine Jeanette is an orphan adopted by an extremely religious mother so she can be raised as a missionary. Raised as an outsider in her northern England town, Jeanette grows up thinking for herself and discovering life and sexuality on her own terms. Although her life is at odds with most, she accepts what she can.
This is the story of a young woman who, from an early age, turns life and adverisity into something liveable. No whining here.
This book grew on me. Normally I am not a fan of books told in first person, but this one was rather charming. The tales inserted along the way are almost like parts of a puzzle, putting the story into perspective.
Thanks, Wendy. I would never have found this charming story without your task.
4 Stars Read for task 25.3
The Captain's Wife by Douglas Kelley
In 1856 Captain Joshua Patten takes his young wife Mary with him on his clipper ship as he sails from New York to San Fransisco. This is her second voyage with him. They are sailing with a good crew, but an unreliable first mate and an inexperienced second mate.
Trouble looms before they reach Cape Horn. The first mate has a fight with the captain and is arrested. Patten apparently suffers from his head wound or an undetirmined illness, but spends much of the rest of the time unconscious.
Mary is the only one on the crew who can use the sextant to find their location and plot their course unless they are willing to release the first mate.
This is a novel based on a real life event.
