The newly re-release is 3 Volumes into one book which is more than 200 pages. Normally I wouldn't with a 100 page manga but since this was a honky-biggo (600 pages) I thought I'd ask.

Well, if you didn't have company that demanded every second of your attention, you'd probably been more attentive to your GR duties. (She's my sister, and I went to visit over the weekend. And we did GR stuff--watched Marie Antoinette.)
The minute my back is turned....

I personally don't like Manga or graphic novels, but If you read at least 200 pages worth, I'll take Fushigi Yûgi The Mysterious Play, Volume 1 Priestess for this task.
I'll have to start looking at the thread more often on the weekend.

@DreeHow about?
The House on Fortune Street A Novel
The Fortune Cookie Chronicles Adventures in the World of Chinese Food
The Friends of Meager Fortune
Everything Matters! A Novel - prophesy
Dree wrote: "Kristina, thanks for the suggestions! Anything under 400 pages ;) ? I have a very backed up library queue and everything is comi..."Perhaps The Doomsday Key will work? Included in the synopsis: "...That alone might not be enough, as the true path to salvation is revealed in a dark prophecy of doom."
Or instead of focusing on prophecies, you could look at Daughter of Fortune A Novel by Isabel Allende or Fools of Fortune by William Trevor
I read Dune for an English class, which was how I made it through. Kristina, thanks for the suggestions! Anything under 400 pages ;) ? I have a very backed up library queue and everything is coming at once (currently I have The Year of the Flood, Girl in a Blue Dress, and The Food of a Younger Land The WPA's Portrait of Food in Pre-World War II America, all of which will be due within 3 weeks and can't be renewed! And more are coming. I hate it when this happens, most of these I requested back in August. *sigh*

I took a quick look on your page and see that you're not opposed to challenging or fantastical works and this was amazing! Definitely more of the literary variety, rather than your typical mass market. I'll end there because I can get slightly fanatical about it. ;)
On the other hand, I'm reading The Once and Future King for this task which I'm in love with and is conveniently available in mass market because it's a complete classic! :)
Does anyone have any suggestions for someone who has "Dune" amongst her worst-books-ever-finished? And does not like most mass market fiction? I have a pretty good list here on goodreads of books read in the last 5 years or so.Thanks!
Janice would you count Fushigi Yugi? The prophecy regarding the Priestess of Suzaku is a major theme of the manga series.
Fushigi Yûgi The Mysterious Play, Volume 1 Priestess (Course the book I read was a book of 3 novels.
I just found a book entitled "A Fortune-Teller Told Me: Earthbound Travels in the Far East", by Tiziano Terzani, for a dollar, at a library sale, and thought it would make a good suggestion/read for this task. It has received excellent reviews. Also, for a lighter read, Psychic Junkie: A Memoir,,
by Sarah Lassez, sounds interesting. It is about a women addicted to a psychic's advise.
Haha, yes, I think so. Since Stephen King isn't exactly one of my "must read" authors (I'm really only wanting to read it to see the differences between the book and the TV show) I should have no problem waiting.
I did 5.6, I'm reading Black and White for 10.7 currently, I did 20.2, and I did 25.2. I don't think there is anywhere else I can fit this in. Maybe next challenge, though.
Can you use it for the Noun task? I should think that zone is a thing.
> Or dead is an adjective in this title, qualifying it for 5.6.
> It would be a long shot, but you might make a case for Johnny Smith being a hero for 10.7.
> The Dead Zone is a 3 word title.
> Could you use it as one of your ABC (20.2) titles: BCD CDE DEF?
> Read a book by Owen King or Joe Hill or Tabitha King, as well as TDZ, to qualify for 25.2.
It looks like it won't work for the math task I was thinking of using it for. Not enough pages. Oh, well! I'm sure I will get to it for "fun" anyway just because I really want to read it. I don't necessarily like King, but I loved the TV show, and I liked reading a few of his other books.
The Wayfarer Redemption looks like it fits the bill. Hope you can use the King for another task, as it is the creepy-edged action drama that King does so well.
I have another book that someone mentioned in this thread, The Wayfarer Redemption. If this one is approved, I will use it instead and can probably use the King book on the math task if it's the right number of pages.
If you really can't find a novel that fits the task as listed, or just really want to read a King novel, I'll stretch the point for the same reason I allowed Odd Thomas. In that, although Odd also had a reluctance to "tell fortunes", he was consulted by friends to interpret their dreams.
In The Dead Zone, Johny Smith, as the wikipedia article says, refuses people asking him to tell their fortunes, but uses his visions to affect the future. (Plus, the film with Christopher Walken as Johnny was really good - typical King fare.)
Janice, please read this and let me know if it changes your mind. I don't want to read the whole thing because I don't want to spoil it, but it looks like Johnny Smith receives mail from people who ask him to tell their futures.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dead_Zo...

Heard that! As I remember, the main character could foretell events, but no one consulted him about them and there are no prophecies involved, so no for The Dead Zone.
I am interested in reading The Dead Zone for this task, but I am only familiar with the TV show and don't know how differently the book handles John Smith's predictions. I don't want to dive into a King book with approval first, though. Janice?

Well, now that's an unusual twist, but it fits the bill of fortune-telling - professional customers seeking advice from someone's interpretations of seemingly unrelated medium(s). Yes, you can use The Song Reader for 25.5.
Hi, I plan to read Harry Potter for this task but just wonder if this book is ok?
The Song Reader by Lisa Tucker
I first plan to use Harry Potter as I'm going to use the series with other tasks too. But this book seems interesting.

I haven't read Affinity and the Amazon.com entry wasn't very helpful in determining medium vs. fortune teller. If the words are not in the title, then I specifically want some prediction, prognostication, prophecy happening in the book. I will accept a spiritualist who is consulted for foretelling, but not for just "getting in touch with the other Side."
For 25.5, Odd Thomas works - although I think it's a stretch - because others rely on the eponymous hero's foretellings based on his visions and his interpretations of their visions
A novelization of Ghost would not work for this task, because the spiritualist is merely a conduit for communicating with the dead.
HiHas anyone read 'Affinity' by Sarah Waters?? - I know it's about a medium, but I don't know if she makes predictions...???
I've been trying to find some classics that might fit the task, but have so far drawn a blank. Can anyone suggest something?
If the con-artist uses these developing psychic powers in predicting the future for others or interpreting the visions of others for their future benefit, I will accept it.
I'm thinking of using this one for the challenge.
Ginsberg, Debra "The grift : a novel"
On Amazon a review says: "Ginsberg’s novel mixes crime, romance, and the amusing question: What happens when a con-artist psychic actually develops psychic powers? "
Janice wrote: "Yes, this is ok. I saw mention of predictions in the blurb, plus it apparently has footnotes, which are always a plus in any book, in my opinion."Awesome, thanks Janice! I get most of my books from the library, but anytime I can use a book from my own shelves at home I'm a happy camper. And yes, footnotes do rock. :)

Definitely, this one works. The whole series is worth reading when you have the time.
Instead of posting over under the general questions thread, I'll ask here since it is specifically for this task.
After thinking back, I remembered there was a movie called The Seeker: The Dark is Rising and it involved prophecy with a young boy in a fight with good versus evil. So after looking around a little more, I found the movie was worked off the book, The Dark Is Rising. I think I would like to read something new, even if it is the second book in the series, so I can see how much the movie was different from the book (as most are). Would this work for the challenge?
Amy wrote: "I don't know if this ever got a clear answer, but would Good Omens work for this task?"
I'm assuming Good Omens by Prachett and Gaiman. Sure, and if I could, I'd award extra points for the footnotes. ;^)

Looks like this series is all good for Fortune Telling (prophecy) because of the "chosen one" theme.

I'm OK with the Prophecy of Blood.
I'm going to ask, although I think I'm stretching the parameters of the Task:

Would the Gregor the Overlander series work for this? The first two were completely based on prophecies. It is the third one I want to read.
And it looks like the third one is based on a prophecy called the Prophecy of Blood.
Lindsey wrote: "Would The Enchantress of Florence work? In the description it talks about one of the characters "Qara Koz, 'Lady Black Eyes', a great beauty believed to possess powers of enchantment..."
Nope, enchantment and sorcery aren't gonna get it for this task - it's gotta be fortune telling or prophecy.
