Kindred was excellent, and time travel happens as advertised. I also recommend it, although the ending is not for the faint of heart.

Thanks! I figured it was too good to be true.

I read it this summer and sure don't remember any time travel in it--there was some train travel.

2431437 Does anyone that has read it know if The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time can be considered for time travel? I saw that several people had voted for it on the Listopia Time-Travel Books list and was curious. I don't see anything indicative of that in the description.

Thanks for the warning. I've heard good and bad -- and unfortunately already requested and received it from the library before I heard the bad so I thought I'd give it a go anyhow. If I find it really rough going, though, I'll set it down after the first 20 pages instead of wasting my time!

THAT's right. I've read all the HP books... (I think I've even read the first 4 twice), but I'm obviously not the most faithful fan the series has ever had! ;) I've never met anyone who has a worse memory than me... (Well... not anyone younger than 70...)

Nophoto-f-25x33 Thanks, everyone. I probably will still use it for Cait's, since I forgot I already own a book for the time-travel task -- Oh, how I'm drowning in TBRs! -- but at least these give ppl some more ideas, I guess?

1283225 I just finished The Devil's Arithmetic by Jane Yolen for the YA task of the Summer Challenge. It would definitely be appropriate for this task.

2628696 I read Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict right around the same time as I read By a Lady Being the Adventures of an Enlightened American in Jane Austen's England. I get them a bit confused, but I think By A Lady had more of a time travel angle. The main character in that one definitely went back in time. Though either way, I'd think switching bodies would still count as going back in time...

message 51: by Sara ♥ (last edited Aug 28, 2009 10:03PM) (new)

155288 I would think so. It IS an out-of-body experience, but the fact that she is, inside, a 21st century woman in the 19th century... and trying to cope with that. I'm pretty sure that would work.

You know, I just thought of a fun and cute little chick-lit book I read a while back where the main character gets transported back to the 1950s. It's called I Went to Vassar for This? by Naomi Neale. I think the best part was how in the present, she was always trying to lose 5 or 10 pounds, but in the 50s, it was stylish to be curvy. Can I go back to the 50s?

message 50: by Abigail (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 Has anyone read Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict by Laura Viera Rigler? A blurb on the back flap says, "a 21st-century woman ... lands unexpectedly in the body of a 19th-century British woman ..." I'm not sure if that counts as time-travel b/c she changes bodies. Or if it ends up that it has some silly "... and then she woke up" sort of ending.

I can always use it for part of Cait's task, but thought I'd see if anyone knows anything more about it over here.

Once you've read it, you'll see why that's such a difficult question to answer... Heehee... YES, there's travel back and forth and up and down and side to side in time. The real question is when you're traveling through time, what are the appropriate verb tenses? (I love that part—you'll see...)

But seriously, they go forward in time for part of it, then go back in time near the end. I don't want to give anything away.

2439579 A Handful of Time by Kit Pearson is excellent, and I ditto the recommendations of To Say Nothing of the Dog and Doomsday Book.

1369783 I read A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court back in January. It was really good, funny and all that. I highly recommend it.

1518370 Oh I found another one that will work for any who are still looking: The Mirror.

message 33: by Jamie (new)

1518370 Will The Time Machine by H.G. Wells count? I'm not sure if someone answered this already because I saw discussion on whether or not this would work but I didn't find an answer..or maybe I just was not looking hard enough :)

Thanks in advance for your help!

1419944 I just found Flight: A Novel by Sherman Alexie. It would also work for the native american task.

Nophoto-f-25x33 No problem! I actually accidentally started a VERY similar book last night, without realizing it was the same idea... So if someone wants another choice, try:
The Boy I Loved Before by Jenny Colgan

I'm only on about page 20, so I can't tell you how good it is yet, but it should be easy to find (published 2004) and seems like an easy, British chick lit-y read.

265874 Abigail- Thanks for finding that book! You are a lifesaver :)

1457595 Would The Eyre Affair work for this task?

I think I'm going to read The Yiddish Policemen's Union for the Alternative History task, so I'm hoping The Eyre Affair will work for the time travel task as I'd really like to work both into this challenge.

Thanks!

2182384 Lost in a Good Book (Thursday Next, #2)

I found this on the time travel popular list

so I can count for this task?

Sarah i have a copy of it if you'd like to borrow it.

message 25: by Abigail (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 I just found a new paperback on the recommended shelf at my favorite bookstore that seems to work:
Time of My Life by Allison Winn Scotch
The blurb on the back includes the line, "Then one morning Jillian wakes up seven years in the past." Ta-da!
Warning: It looks somewhat chick-lit-esque (which I like, but I know isn't for everyone)

Actually all of them do.

And I would second A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's court by Twain also.
