1376766 Umm... It was definitely implied. :)

852687 What?!? Those books sound good and I'm offended that Becky never suggested them to me.

1376766 Well it seems that you've actually read a lot of what I'd consider fantasy - the Hobbit, Harry Potter, and some Stephen King (all of which make me VERY happy, I must say!).

I'd say that you should continue on with Tolkien if you haven't - The Lord of the Rings is one of my all time favorite stories.

You might also like The Gemma Doyle series. It's cross-genre: YA Historical Fantasy with a gothic-y feel and a touch of mythology and magic. :)

Here are the books:
A Great and Terrible Beauty (Gemma Doyle, #1)Rebel Angels (Gemma Doyle, #2)The Sweet Far Thing (Gemma Doyle, #3)

2514142 Thanks Becky! Maybe I haven't tried a really good sci-fi or fantasy...very open to try something different. I have read a couple and they were not bad, it is just hard for me to imagine some of these make-believe lands. I guess I need to stretch my horizons! Any suggestions welcome! I have tried the silly fluff chick-lit too, I feel the same way you do.

message 220: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 Welcome Karen. :)

I think that you are definitely missing out on some great books by avoiding fantasy and sci-fi, but everyone's got their preferences. I try to avoid silly fluff chick-lit whenever possible, as reading about someone's materialism just doesn't strike my fancy! LOL

message 219: by Karen (new)

2514142 Hello, my name is Karen and I am happy to be a part of the Historical Fictinistas! I read pretty much everything except Fantasy and SciFi...I like to live in the real world! That is why my favorite genre is Historical Fiction. Guess it comes natural for a person with a degree in History! As it says on my profile there are too many Historical Fiction books that I love to name them all. I like to read all types of Historical Fiction - any culture, any time period, any people in history...love them all. Looking forward to getting suggestions from others who share the same love of reading. I just finished Shanghai Girls by Lisa See and recommend it to all. Thanks again for letting me be a part of this great group...ah the adventures that lie ahead!

Yes, Katharine, the covers ARE lovely. Beaufort Books' designer did a wonderful job. I hope you enjoy my books, if you get to read them. Let me know!

Hi Becky!

Yeah, who cares about his private life? I totally agree. But I'm also talking about the corporate model. As a newspaper reporter for 25 years, I was always deeply committed to serving the public interest. Then, in recent years, journalists started being called "content providers" and readers began to be known as "customers." Soon I began being censored by my own editors because advertisers might be offended by what I was writing.

I still subscribe to newspapers, and will until there are no more to read. But I ask you: With these kinds of profit-driven changes, why should readers trust that their newspapers are really giving them the news? When the trust is gone, the relationship is over. That, in my opinion, is why the industry is failing.

But don't get me started! ;-)

124201 Hi to Sherry! (And Sherrie!) Sherry, your books look wonderful, and those are some lovely covers.

message 214: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 Hi Sherry, welcome to the group. :D

I 100% agree with you on the newspaper industry, and the NEWS industry in general. Just the fact that Tiger Woods' discretion is "news" is disturbing to me. That's not news, it's tabloid fodder. Ugh. So, to your statement of that's what we get when profit takes precedence, I say a big "MM-HMMM!!"

LOL

message 213: by Sherry (new)

1726634 Hi ya'll, I'm Sherry Jones, a lover of all fiction and especially historical -- so much that I write it as well as read it. My favorite HF author is Rose Tremain, but I recently finished "The Known World" by Edward P. Jones (no relation, ha ha!) and really liked it a lot. I love books that take me into another time and place, and that teach me something about human nature. Empathy rules!

I live in Spokane, Wash., the OTHER city in this great state, with my awesome teenage daughter and my BFF Michael, and I plan to write books for the rest of my life. I also play classical piano, cook, and advocate for women's rights, the environment, and human rights. A former journalist, I lament the downward spiral the newspaper industry is in, but that's what you get when profit takes precedence over public service.

My books are The Jewel of Medina and The Sword of Medina A Novel, which, incidentally, is offered in a Goodreads Giveaway right now. My next book, which I'm working on, is about four sisters who became queens, very famous in their time, which is 13th-century Europe.

1439853 Hello all! Just wanted to say Hi and introduce myself. I love to read just about anything, but for some reason historical fiction seems to always pull me back in and it's just so darn fascinating!
I live in Colorado, have been married for 19 years and have a 5-year old son. I spend most of my free time reading, of course!

Looking forward to the group discussion :)

message 210: by Katharine (new)

124201 Heather and Felina, thanks for the welcome and the good wishes on the book! I'm very much looking forward to hearing what readers of historical fiction think of it. I wrote it while I was in a master's program in creative writing -- the emphasis there was definitely on contemporary settings, modern realist fiction, etc., so I'm really excited to talk to other people who love historical fiction.

message 209: by Felina (new)

852687 Katharine - That does look really good. I added it to my TBR.

message 208: by Heather, Poof! I'm a mod. (new)

1412137 Hi Katharine and welcome to the group! Best of luck to you with your new book release! I just read the description for it and I definitely would like to check it out. :)

message 207: by Katharine (last edited 15 days ago, 09:30PM) (new)

124201 Hi everyone! I joined the group a little while ago and am finally getting around to posting here. I love historical fiction and historical fantasy -- everything from Heyer to "The Fall River Axe Murders" to Doomsday Book. I'm really happy to have found this group.

My first novel Alcestis is coming out in February and I'm getting pretty excited as the pub date finally nears. My next book is going to be historical fiction, too -- the current elevator pitch is Alias Grace meets Fingersmith meets The Secret History. I'm trying to finish my dissertation right now, but can't wait to start writing again. And reading again. (Mirian, you're not kidding about the TBR list getting out of control.)

message 206: by Heather, Poof! I'm a mod. (new)

1412137 Welcome Chris and Mirian!

message 205: by Mirian (new)

2494413 Thank you!

message 204: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 Welcome, congrats and our sympathies! (That's for joining, the baby and the TBR. :P)

message 203: by Mirian (new)

2494413 Hi all, I've been hanging around here for a couple months, but forgot my manners and didn't introduce myself. I'm from Oregon, nearly 21 years old and have a baby on the way!

This group has been great; all my favorites are HF and it's good to be surrounded by people who read. I'm not broadly read, so goodreads has been the best thing since chocolate! (Except for the part where the TBR list gets waaaaaaay out of control.)

message 202: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 I do my best. :P

message 201: by Felina (new)

852687 I said you were hilarious because you are. And its the people that are addictive. I was a member of goodreads for 6 months before I joined a book club and I would get on maybe once a week. Now I'm on all the time. Hilarious!

message 200: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 No. I don't get it either. O_o

message 199: by Chris (new)

1956959 Yeah..especially when you talk to me...i read somewhere that someone called us "hilarious".....

I don't see it, myself....

message 198: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 Very true. I bet people refresh pretty often to see what I've come up with next. Don'tcha?? :)

message 197: by Chris (new)

1956959 Hey, the format and features of GR are pretty cool too.....I get that.....but of course it's these entertaining people that make us come back and refresh it so often. To see what silliness they've cooked up.

message 196: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 Hmm... Good question. The people, I suppose. Everyone is just so entertaining I can't drag myself away!

message 195: by Chris (new)

1956959 is it GR, or the people on GR?

message 194: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 Well... as fortune cookies are Chinese (or at least are associated with Chinese food), I kinda figured. :P

I've really really been enjoying Shogun. Unfortunately, I don't have much motivation to read lately... I keep thinking of all the stuff I have to do to get ready to go on vacation... cleaning, laundry, getting as caught up as possible on my accounts at work, cleaning out the fridge, packing etc... And then I say "screw it" and get on Goodreads.

So, 12 hours before I'm actually getting in the car and going, I'll be scrambling around like a mad-woman trying to get everything done at once. *sigh*

Why does GR have to be so addictive? :D

message 193: by Chris (new)

1956959 Thanks, Felina. See, I'm following you now!

I've actually wanted to read Shogun before, Becky. I've been curious how you've been liking it. Since it looks like we're entering the season of bricks and all.

And you know I was kidding about that 2000 page fortune cookie thing....

message 192: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 Well! Who let this guy in?? Just kidding! :P

I didn't know that you liked HF Chris, or I'd have invited you.

Our November and December group read, which officially started yesterday is Shogun. It's VERY good so far, so if you haven't read it, I highly recommend it. :)

message 191: by Felina (new)

852687 Hi Chris...I just got confused about which group I was looking at. ;) Welcome to the group!

message 190: by Chris (new)

1956959 Hi everyone. I was doing a little browsing around and it looked like this was a cool group. I enjoy historical fiction, though I've never really dedicated myself to it as a primary genre. I've read several Michener books over the years and I've touched on some others that fit the category. I really enjoy historical fantasy such as Guy Gavriel Kay, which is based a lot on our own history, though the world populated is fictional.

And to add to that, it looked like y'all could use a male perspective in here....

message 189: by Beth (new)

1376766 Hello new members! Good to have you!
Please vote (for Shogun) in the November group poll - http://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/25727...

No pressure! :P

message 187: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 Either that, or some of us are just way too chatty for our own good. :P

message 186: by Liz (new)

1472632 Thanks for the welcomes. Guess goodreads isn't such a big place after all.

message 185: by Lyn M (new)

2124637 Hey Liz - I know we are in a few of the same groups. Welcome to this one. It is a great group and a lot of fun.

1412137 Glad to have you, Liz! I recognize you from TNBBC. It's funny all the familiar faces you come across in the different groups. I really enjoy that!

1990389 Just finally getting back on! I've been too busy reading! And working!

Welcome to everyone and I hope I can get more involved on here! My husband is also not a reader and grumbles whenever I dive into a book but I just remind him that he is stuck with me and that he should be happy to have something to do but come up with projects for him!

message 178: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 So true... I need my fix!!

Welcome everyone... glad to have you! :D

1412137 Welcome Caroline! My life changed drastically when I starting joining in on the discussion boards. What started as dabbling turned into a full-fledged addiction! Now I feel lost if I don't get my daily dose of GR. LOL

Jump right in and have fun! I look forward to chatting with you :)

message 176: by Caroline (new)

179454 Hi all!. My name is Caroline, and I have just discovered GoodReads discussion boards. I've been reading historical fiction since was a pre-teen, and I write some too. Hopefully, one of these days, I will get published...

1376766 Maybe Children of the Corn would have been a better choice.

Pros:
It's King.
We were in a cornfield.

Cons:
We were in a cornfield.
