message 206: by Heather, Poof! I'm a mod. (new)

1412137 Welcome Chris and Mirian!

message 205: by Mirian (new)

2494413 Thank you!

message 204: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 Welcome, congrats and our sympathies! (That's for joining, the baby and the TBR. :P)

message 203: by Mirian (new)

2494413 Hi all, I've been hanging around here for a couple months, but forgot my manners and didn't introduce myself. I'm from Oregon, nearly 21 years old and have a baby on the way!

This group has been great; all my favorites are HF and it's good to be surrounded by people who read. I'm not broadly read, so goodreads has been the best thing since chocolate! (Except for the part where the TBR list gets waaaaaaay out of control.)

message 202: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 I do my best. :P

message 201: by Felina (new)

852687 I said you were hilarious because you are. And its the people that are addictive. I was a member of goodreads for 6 months before I joined a book club and I would get on maybe once a week. Now I'm on all the time. Hilarious!

message 200: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 No. I don't get it either. O_o

message 199: by Chris (new)

1956959 Yeah..especially when you talk to me...i read somewhere that someone called us "hilarious".....

I don't see it, myself....

message 198: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 Very true. I bet people refresh pretty often to see what I've come up with next. Don'tcha?? :)

message 197: by Chris (new)

1956959 Hey, the format and features of GR are pretty cool too.....I get that.....but of course it's these entertaining people that make us come back and refresh it so often. To see what silliness they've cooked up.

message 196: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 Hmm... Good question. The people, I suppose. Everyone is just so entertaining I can't drag myself away!

message 195: by Chris (new)

1956959 is it GR, or the people on GR?

message 194: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 Well... as fortune cookies are Chinese (or at least are associated with Chinese food), I kinda figured. :P

I've really really been enjoying Shogun. Unfortunately, I don't have much motivation to read lately... I keep thinking of all the stuff I have to do to get ready to go on vacation... cleaning, laundry, getting as caught up as possible on my accounts at work, cleaning out the fridge, packing etc... And then I say "screw it" and get on Goodreads.

So, 12 hours before I'm actually getting in the car and going, I'll be scrambling around like a mad-woman trying to get everything done at once. *sigh*

Why does GR have to be so addictive? :D

message 193: by Chris (new)

1956959 Thanks, Felina. See, I'm following you now!

I've actually wanted to read Shogun before, Becky. I've been curious how you've been liking it. Since it looks like we're entering the season of bricks and all.

And you know I was kidding about that 2000 page fortune cookie thing....

message 192: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 Well! Who let this guy in?? Just kidding! :P

I didn't know that you liked HF Chris, or I'd have invited you.

Our November and December group read, which officially started yesterday is Shogun. It's VERY good so far, so if you haven't read it, I highly recommend it. :)

message 191: by Felina (new)

852687 Hi Chris...I just got confused about which group I was looking at. ;) Welcome to the group!

message 190: by Chris (new)

1956959 Hi everyone. I was doing a little browsing around and it looked like this was a cool group. I enjoy historical fiction, though I've never really dedicated myself to it as a primary genre. I've read several Michener books over the years and I've touched on some others that fit the category. I really enjoy historical fantasy such as Guy Gavriel Kay, which is based a lot on our own history, though the world populated is fictional.

And to add to that, it looked like y'all could use a male perspective in here....

message 189: by Beth (new)

688928 LOL :-)

message 188: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 Hello new members! Good to have you!
Please vote (for Shogun) in the November group poll - http://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/25727...

No pressure! :P

message 187: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 Either that, or some of us are just way too chatty for our own good. :P

message 186: by Liz (new)

1472632 Thanks for the welcomes. Guess goodreads isn't such a big place after all.

message 185: by Lyn (new)

2124637 Hey Liz - I know we are in a few of the same groups. Welcome to this one. It is a great group and a lot of fun.

message 184: by Heather, Poof! I'm a mod. (new)

1412137 Glad to have you, Liz! I recognize you from TNBBC. It's funny all the familiar faces you come across in the different groups. I really enjoy that!

message 183: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 Welcome Liz!

message 182: by Liz (new)

1472632 Hi everyone, just joined the group today. I recognize some of you from 'around'. Glad to find this group.

Haha Becky. That's hilarous!

message 180: by Lyn (new)

2124637 Welcome Caroline. Look forward to getting to know you on the boards.

message 179: by Lisa (new)

1990389 Just finally getting back on! I've been too busy reading! And working!

Welcome to everyone and I hope I can get more involved on here! My husband is also not a reader and grumbles whenever I dive into a book but I just remind him that he is stuck with me and that he should be happy to have something to do but come up with projects for him!

message 178: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 So true... I need my fix!!

Welcome everyone... glad to have you! :D

message 177: by Heather, Poof! I'm a mod. (new)

1412137 Welcome Caroline! My life changed drastically when I starting joining in on the discussion boards. What started as dabbling turned into a full-fledged addiction! Now I feel lost if I don't get my daily dose of GR. LOL

Jump right in and have fun! I look forward to chatting with you :)

message 176: by Caroline (new)

179454 Hi all!. My name is Caroline, and I have just discovered GoodReads discussion boards. I've been reading historical fiction since was a pre-teen, and I write some too. Hopefully, one of these days, I will get published...

message 175: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 Maybe Children of the Corn would have been a better choice.

Pros:
It's King.
We were in a cornfield.

Cons:
We were in a cornfield.

message 174: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 Yeah. I know the feeling. Maybe I should try the reading out loud thing.

He did read to me once on a long drive, but I can't say that I was really all that excited about it. He was reading Vurt, which IS one of the very, very few books he's read and really liked. But I'm just not much into cyberpunk... or at all, really, so, while it was interesting to not think about the unending cornfield I was driving through, I can't say that it was a great experience.

message 173: by Lyn (new)

2124637 Becky - I am still laughing!! My husband got the great idea that we would read books together. This translates as I read out loud while he sleeps.

message 172: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 My boyfriend has a "daunting" stack of books that he "may never finish". There are 8 books in it. O_o

He said to me that he wants me to start telling him when I'm getting sleepy and when I think I'm only going to read for 30 more minutes each night, so that for those 30 minutes he can read with me. So, I told him that night... he said - "Oh I meant tomorrow!"

Tomorrow came and I told him, and he read. Sort of. He made it 2 (TWO!!) pages and zonked out. The next night, he managed to double his record and made it to 4 pages before falling asleep. The night after that he didn't even crack the book.. just looked at it with this pitiful expression of "Oh, why me??" The night after that he was back to "Maybe tomorrow..."

Tomorrow never came. =\

message 171: by Kimberly (new)

2669490 What's the deal with all of us being with non-readers?! I can get my husband to read maybe one book every 6 months. I guess opposites do attract, haha :)

message 170: by Lyn (new)

2124637 Welcome Jan. I know what you mean about a TBR that is more than you could ever read. I have the same problem myself. And, like you, my partner never picks up a book, while I am never seen without one. It bugs the heck out of him sometimes, lol.

message 169: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 Welcome Jan... We all do indeed know the score! You'll fit right in here. :)

message 168: by Beadyjan (new)

2845570 Hi everyone - I'm Jan, I love books not just reading them but talking about them, collecting them (also known as hoarding) I have a huge tbr pile which I'll never get through if I live to be 100 - I guess you all know the score!

My favourite genre is Historical fiction with a special fondness for (though not exclusively) books set in Victorian England and medieval Britain.

I'm currently reading "The Owl killers" by Karen Maitland and enjoying it loads so far.

I look forward to chatting about books I've enjoyed, particularly as my partner and best friend seldom pick up a book, whereas I'm never seen without one!

message 167: by Heather, Poof! I'm a mod. (new)

1412137 Wow, Jennifer! Three times through the Outlander series? That's impressive! That series is not for the faint of heart...we're talking thousands of pages involved. Jamie and Claire are so worth it though, aren't they! :)

I'm planning on starting on Breath of Snow and Ashes (my first read of it) and can't wait to see where the story will take us in that one. One of the things I love about Gabaldon is that she keeps you guessing the entire time. I never know what to expect, which is awesome.

Oh, and welcome to the group! :)

message 166: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 Hi Jennifer! Welcome to the group!

message 165: by Lyn (new)

2124637 Hey Jennifer, welcome to the group. I, too, love Outlander.

message 164: by Jennifer A (new)

2834022 Hey everybody, just sayin hi and I too am an Outlander fanatic. On my third read through of the series so I can have it fresh when I get to Echo. I've read some other historical fiction as well.

message 163: by Heather, Poof! I'm a mod. (new)

1412137 Hi Leslie!!! It's great to see you here! :)

I'm currently reading Pillars and really enjoying it so far. One of the things I'm loving about it, is that every time I pick it up and start to read, I'm completely drawn into the story. I love it when a book can do that!

message 162: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 Welcome Leslie! :)

message 161: by Leslie (new)

374406 Wow! Looking forward to this group.....I love historical fiction! Pillars of the Earth is one of my favorites...along with The Historian.

message 160: by Becky, Just Moddin' (new)

1376766 Hi Keia, thanks for joining! We look forward to hearing which books you've loved!

message 159: by Jennifer (new)

2268561 Hi Keia...welcome to the group!!!

message 158: by Keia (new)

2719723 Hello Everyone!
I'm very grateful that I was able to join this club... I have always and will always love HF. It is my first choice when I'm looking for another book to read. I also really want to hear what all of you are reading so that I can add them to my TBR.

message 157: by Kellie (new)

842772 I actually own a copy of The Outlander but have not read it yet...Maybe I need to put it towards the top of Mount TBR....
Still lovin' Pillars...
