Well, just as a way of getting people talking, I thought I would see if everyone would like to tell there favorite book(s) with a little explanation of why.

My favorite book is "The Wind Up Bird Chronicles" by Haruki Murakami. The way the book was written combined the real with the slightly supernatural effortlessly. It was like flowing from consciousness into a dream and back out. The characters were developed well, and made me interested in their lives.

How about yours?

I was thinking the same thing, Jim. Glad you got to it first.

My favorite books are by Roger Zelazny. I can't decide between This Immortal & Lord of Light. Both are a blend of SF & Fantasy with good main stories & a lot of hinted at themes & under stories that make re-reads every bit as interesting as the first one. Zelazny was extremely well read & often makes references to classic works that add depths to the story, but I missed them the first time through because I didn't recognize them for such. The books read differently depending on my mood, too.

Well on the off chance that it won't appear I'm having a discussion with my alter ego, thanks for the recommendations Jim, I added "Lord of Light" to my to read list.

I *loved* The Wind-up Bird Chronicle. A bunch of on-line friends and I read it as sort of an informal book club. A bunch of the folks didn't care for it, because they said "it has no plot." My response: "Neither does an average year in anyone's life ... which is what this book is about. It's brilliant in that way." :-)

It's hard for me to pick just one favorite book, because I have read so many, LOL. I would say that two which have influenced me deeply were

The Man Who Fell to Earth and The Phantom of the Opera. Both of them have overarching themes of compassion toward those who are different from ourselves.

Each book has its merits

Of heritage books, and I am still surprised, who wrote in the Arab Mohieddin - Alvnohat Meccan

Modern novels, and modern literature, and I love the story about , the Taj Mahal in India : Beneath a Marble Sky
by John Shors.

also the novel of Japanese novelist : The Wind-up Bird Chronicle , but still do some reaserch about him , and his live , and who was behind him
