Nophoto-u-25x33 Heard a lot, about "black company" is a pearl of classic series which's buried, and it's the example for military fantasy.
Just booked Chronicles of the Black Company and The Books of the South, covered total 6 books in series.
Does anyone get chance to taste it before? What's your comments?

1019174 The Books of the North (the first three) are Glen Cook at his best. The Books of the South are uneven and when Croaker is not the narrator don't have the same conviction but they're still good. And the ending of the series (Soldiers Live The Chronicle of the Black Company Books of the Glittering Stone Book Four) is perfect.

Of course, I'm a bit biased: You'll notice that Croaker is my avatar here on GR :-)

2081059 One of the best series I have read. Loved it.
I had minor problems with Bleak Seasons. It started a bit odd and took me a while to get into it. Another issue in the last 3 books? was that he used too many names similar to Hindu names. When I read fantasy I love to live in the fantasy, the imaginary world. When someone inplements concepts of real life religion I don't mind it but names....it sort of ruins the imaginary world and gets me back to Earth. I know others don't have an issue with it, otherwise I loved the series.

Nophoto-m-25x33 One of my favorite all-time series, though I admit I have not had the chance to read the last couple. You must definitely go through the first four. And, yes, Croaker is a terrific character, not only one of Glen's best, but one of my favorite in fantasy.

Just my take.

Nophoto-u-25x33 Croaker, Mmm...
Most of you guys mentioned this character, I need to pay attention on him...

In Chinaese, we call Croaker - 哇哇(pronunciation: wawa)

@Systest: In English, "to croak" means "to die" so Croaker's name is a joke about his role as the Company's physician - if you let yourself get sick, he'll kill you (that's the joke, of course, Croaker is a good doctor).

Does "wawa" mean the same thing in Chinese?

Though, even if it does, I have to admit I don't think I'd have the same feelings for a character named "Wawa" as I do for one named "Croaker."

And I'm curious now: How is Lady translated? Raven? Limper? How do translators deal with Hagop?

message 7: by Systest (new)

Nophoto-u-25x33 I didn't open the book yet...
For "Wawa", if someone feel deeply pain in physical, he/she may cry in loud, sound like "wawa", a "onomatopoeia". It's a joke, right?

Lady/Raven/Limper, just got feeling of it looks like, directly. But for Hagop, no idea, what's your suggestion?

After I getting finished North/South book, there must be new opinions for all these characters.

1884119 I just started reading Chronicles of The Black Company (The Black Company). The writing style reminds me a lot of The Things They Carried every character feels like a gritty U.S. Marine, which isn't necessarily bad. I just have to get used to it.

The Taken are very interesting and Raven seems to be BAMF material for sure. :]

Nophoto-m-25x33 I've heard a lot about these books on various forums. I've got to add these books to my reading pile.

1884119 Just finished The Black Company and it took me a little while to get used to but once I was adjusted to the storytelling I fell in love with the Company. Now I can't wait to read more!
