Although he didn't fit the physical description, there is an important factor about Bettany that I fear tampering with: his chemistry with Crowe. Chemistry between Aubrey and Maturin is the single most important factor in their presentation on screen, and what a shame it would be if they found an actor who "fit" the part, could act his socks off, but was dead flat in conjunction with Crowe.
I wasn't that impressed by Paul Bettany anyway most likely because he didn't fit the description of Stephen from the book. Ok, so who can we pick that would fit the part...?
I hope Bettany changes his mind. I saw the movie before I read the books, and despite O'Brian's strenuous efforts to convince me that Stephen is small and reptilian with a grating voice, he persistently looks and sounds like Paul Bettany in my mind.
I do hope they manage to put this together! I'd read previously that Paul Bettany is not interested in reprising his role as Stephen, so I wonder who we'd get in his place? I'll keep my fingers crossed that the film happens, but won't hold my breath!
