LOL! Well, when I first posted that comment, I didn't intend it to sound like a chore, but I've gotten far enough into the book that now it seems an apt comparison. Unfortunately, I'm having a really hard time getting into the author's writing style.

Sorry to hear you couldn't finish Devil Takes a Bride, Fani. That was another of my favorites in the series.

You're not the only one, if that's any consolation. I tried twice to read The Proposition and failed both times. Many people love her style, but I find her plots too slow -and perhaps too weird- for me.

I really can't pinpoint what's bothering me in 'Devil Takes a Bride', so I haven't completely given up on that yet. Perhaps third time's the charm?

message 804: by Julie (Mom2lnb) (new)

883725 It is nice to know I'm not the only one, and I agree about the slow plotting. Right now it's moving at a snail's pace.:-(

1468549 I am re-reading some old books from the 70's ( I think I read them in the early 80's) Laurie Mcbain's Devils Desire and Midnight Madness. Funny, romance writing sure has changed ( for the better) since then. I am enjoying them but not as much as on my first read way back when.

2814610 Hi

Currently re-reading Amanda Quick's Deception, about the third time I've read this one, it's turing out to be one of my favourites by her. Also, just finished Julia Quinn's Everything and the Moon, which I enjoyed better than I expected, got put off by the description on the back, but enjoyed it, also Brighter than the Sun, which I thought was better than Everything.

Which begs the question...when do you throw up your hands with books when you realize you just don't like them. I have read everything my favorite authors have written (that are available at the library) and am expanding my horizons into different/new authors to me. Currently, I am reading Hannah Howell's

Highland Bride, my first time with her and so far so good. But, I just came off of Jude Deveraux's The Heiress which was just OK...by the end I just wanted it over. I had read her Highland Velvet and did enjoy that so I went back and read Velvet Song and that was a waste of time...time I can never get back it was that bad. It was ALL.OVER.THE.PLACE. My intent was to read all of the velvet series but I just couldn't.

So, my question is, once you figure out that a book isn't meeting expectations (and really...mine are quite low), do you finish it or put it aside?

Nophoto-f-25x33 Try "Deep Creek" by Dana Hand, out soon, which I am reading via NetGalleys. Technically it's a historical thriller (about the hunt for the slayers of 31 Chinese gold miners in 1887 Idaho) but the thread that binds it all is the decades-long multicultural romance of the Yankee judge Joe Vincent and the metis (French-Nez Perce) river guide Grace Sundown. It's rare to have imperfect, human, middle-aged lovers in fiction, and even rarer to care about them as much as you do as the story unspools. (There's a touch of the paranormal in the story, too, but it's worked in very subtly.)

Carolyn, even if a book is really bad I end up finishing it. I wish I could be one of those people that just throws in the towel and moves on but I'm always hoping it gets better and rarely does.

I never had any luck with Hannah Howel and just stopped buying her books altogether.
