I haven't read much Urban Fantasy. I am getting a better understanding of the difference. What do you when at the end of one book the have a HEA and the other book they don't? Would you just classify it PNR? Anyway my favorite series (by my def) is The Phoenix Chronicles by Lori Handeland. Any Given Doomsday
Doomsday Can Wait
Apocalypse Happens
My favorites:Laurell K. Hamilton - Anita Blake Series
Laurell K. Hamilton - Merry Gentry Series
Kim Harrison - Rachel Morgan Series
Kelley Armstrong - Otherworld series (although I prefer her wolf books over the others)
Patricia Briggs - Mercy and Alpha&Omega (interlinked worlds)
Charlaine Harris - Sookie Stackhouse series
Eileen Wilks - World of the Lupi series
I strongly prefer urban fantasy over paranormal romance. I prefer continuing stories focused on the same characters, where you can see real character growth book to book. (That's why I don't like the jumping perspectives in the Otherworld series.)
I prefer the first person point of view. As long as you relate to the main character, it's so much more of an immersive read.
Although I've been reading Laurell K. Hamilton for years (back when she was considered horror) I've begun reading other Urban fantasy novels and I'm really enjoying them.
My favorite authors are:
Kelley Armstrong (Otherworld series)
Laurell K. Hamilton (Anita Blake series)
Kim Harrison (Rachel Morgan series)
Would Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse books fall under this category do you think? I like her books, too.

Just wanted to say Thanks to Lauren for asking and Joy for answering. That link really helped! I had a vague idea of the differences, but it's so nice to have to written out so clearly!
I spent a while gathering a bunch of UF thinking they were just an offshoot of PNR... Now I feel it should be said, and this may be something I'll repeat, and repeat often (though probably not in this particular thread/discussion), but I hate first person narration. I hate it with a passion. I can sometimes get over it, but more often then not, that's a sticking point for me. First person means I don't want it, and will most likely not like it (despite an awesome sounding plot).
So all those UF books I got, I posted to PBS, or like sites. I've got A few Mercy Thompson novels (I loved Cry Wolf, and didn't realize the Mercy books were UF) a few Kelly Armstrongs, and a few by Jeaniene Frost, that all sounded really really good, so I'm hoping one day I'll be able to read them, despite the first person narrative.
I thought Moon Called was brilliant, i'd definitely recommend it. It has vamps, werewolves, shifters, great characters and a really good story.
Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews
Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs
Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong
Jaz Park series by Jennifer Rardin
Georgina Kincaid series by Richelle Mead
Jill Kismet series by Lilith Saintcrow
Cassie Palmer series by Karen Chance
Dante Valentine series by Lilith Saintcrow
I enjoy PNR and UF, but most of my fav series are UF.
Thanks Joy,
That did help I guess I would say I am 90% a PRN reader and only 10% A Uf.
So far I am liking the LKH anita blake series. thats the only UF I have read so far

My husband said the same thing. He read the books, and saw the show...I've only seen the show...
I haven't read much UF books, since I'm more of a PNR girl than anything...but here is my list:
Favorite Urban Fantasy Series
Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series
Jeanine Frost's Nighthuntress series
Karen Marie Moning's Fever series
Patricia Brigg's Mercedes Thompson series
Karen Chance's Cassie Palmer series
and I've only read the first book..
Adrian Phoenix's The Maker's Song series.
As for differentiating PNR from UF, the key is the word romance in ParaNormal Romance...meaning if there is a clear Happily - Ever - After between the hero and the heroine at the end of the book...then its PNR.
Yes, it's good but I like the books better. I think it needed a bigger budget and I think they changed some aspects of Dresden's personality to make him more mainstream that I was not happy with. In the book he's fairly celibate until he meets Susan. In the show they have him with a friends with benefits girlfriend. I still bought it on DVD but not as good as the books IMHO.

Did you watch the Dresden files of TV?

It's not a bizarre question. The website below will tell you the difference, and gives you examples. :)
I personally prefer PRN, but I know a lot of people on here really enjoy Urban Fantasy. :)
