1570669 I just finished Moonshine by Rob Thurman. Great book.

1365355 Sookie is extremely self-righteous in the show.

695116 Bill tries hard, but he is old fashioned. That's a big part of his problem. He doesn't whine about his responsibilities, but Sookie also doesn't make any allowance for them, doesn't think about them & thinks the world should go her way.

message 136: by Janet (new)

2377158 You do? i am surprised - I haven't spoken to anyone yet who likes Bill. It seems to me that the books try to make him out to be an old-fashioned kind of guy - but to me it comes across as a bit too premeditated.
I am on book 7 and I truely think he does have feelings for Sookie and that he just doesn't seem to do things right in her mind. Maybe that is just becasue she can't read his and is confused on what his motives could be. But when he tells her he loves her over and over in book 6 - I start thinking maybe he is ok but it will never work...

message 135: by Jim (new)

695116 I like Bill. I think Sookie is pretty rough on her boyfriends.

The way I see it is Bill is a big lame idiot and since Sookie never had a real boyfriend before she is kind of going thru all the teen dating angst now. You are supposed to feel that way. I think you need to keep going because Sookie's sarcasm really starts to come out and makes her so much more in the next few books!

I love these books - the fourth one is by far my fav so far. I am reading the short stories along the way so I don't miss anything - I can't get enough. I am on book 7 now. Keep reading - once I got past the first one and the TV stuff the books have got me addicted. I have even stopped watching True Blood until I finish the books.

message 133: by Levi (new)

2366694 The third is my favorite out so far.

message 132: by Jim (new)

695116 I think I called them 'candy books', not 'brain candy'. I would think the latter is doing logic puzzles, while the former is more like a waking, pleasant dream. No work involved.

If you have access to the second one (Dead in Dallas?) you might want to try that & the third. The third one gets you past the TV series. Maybe that's part of the problem?

message 131: by Nona (new)

1521956 the books are easy read and 'brain cany' you might say. I think me watching the show first then coming back and reading them has ruined certain things. I didn't think Sookie was spoiled at fist but her mannerisms and wht she says in the book kind of rub me th wrong way.

message 130: by Jim (new)

695116 I never really thought of Sookie as spoiled either, although I do think she acts that way with her boy friends later on in the series. Maybe you're picking up on it sooner than I did, Nona. I'm sorry you're not enjoying them.

message 129: by Levi (new)

2366694 SPOILED! How did you get that, she isn't spoiled in the next two books, at least I thought so...

message 128: by Nona (new)

1521956 I finished Dead Until Dark, book 1 of the Sookie Stackhouse Series. I'm hesitant in reading on, Sookie seems to be a spoil little brat and Bill is a mushy Vamp (who knew lovey dovey Vamps?)and well not what I thought it would be.

2457455 Levi wrote: "I'm reading , right now really good book so far."

I enjoyed that book.

message 126: by new_user (new)

1365355 Apocalypse Happens was great, although that ending was quite a twist. o.o Finished Eternal Craving. Now moving on to Shadowlight by Lynn Viehl. I'm liking the "science" so far. :D

message 125: by Levi (new)

2366694 I'm reading Hush, Hush, right now really good book so far.

message 124: by Jo (new)

2457455 Im reading Jonas v. 1

message 123: by Twoina (new)

Nophoto-u-25x33 I just finished Summer of Night by Dan Simmons. I loved this book. It's set in small town Illinois in 1960. It's about a bunch of kids fighting an ancient monster. The activities of the kids remined me of my summers (except for the monster fighting) when I was 10 or 11 and it's a good scary story. I loved the writing. I don't know how I missed Dan Simmons all these years.

message 122: by new_user (new)

1365355 I'm reading Apocalypse Happens, Phoenix Chronicles #3 by Lori Handeland about a woman with some special powers trying to stop the end of the world-- and her troubles with her allies, LOL.

message 121: by Jim (new)

695116 I've read the Aurora Teagarden & Harper Connelly series. Check out my reviews on them. Basically, Aurora is Sookie in a non-magical world - straight murder mystery with romantic overtones.

Harper is a whiny child who got struck by lightning & can now see the last few seconds of a person's life & find bodies. She had a terrible childhood. Believe me, you'll find that out until you just want to smack her. Still, it's not bad. Interesting idea. Our world, nothing really supernatural about it.

I haven't read the Lily Bard series & don't really have any interest. I'm fairly sure it is the same as Aurora, just set in Shakespeare's time.

message 120: by Nona (new)

1521956 as anyone here read her other series?

message 119: by Levi (new)

2366694 YAY! I know she is one of my fav new authors!!! DO you think the books are hilarious at times I litterally buwt out laughing... :)

message 118: by Nona (new)

1521956 I lover her style, it so gitty and very southern.

message 117: by Jim (new)

695116 Don't plan on getting to bed on time, Nona.

;-)

message 116: by Nona (new)

1521956 I'm finally starting the Sookie Stackhouse series or I plan to start it later tonight. I know everyone says the books and show are different, I really like the show, Vamp-drama you got to love it! I still want t read the books for all the between the lines stuff.

1672062 The first in my Thirsting for Blood Series, Never Ceese is being dissected Chapter by Chapter at www.openbooksociety.com this month (October.) You can jump over there to get a good idea of whether you think this vampire/werewolf series might appeal to you. Never Ceese was short-listed for a Bram Stoker Award in 2007 for Superior Achievement in a First Novel. Forever Richard, the second in the series boasts a book blurb from the British Fantasy Society. It might be something worth picking up.

1570669 Since it's Halloween month, I'm trying to read more scary, supernatural books.

I just finished Dracula by Bram Stoker. The next book I'll finish is Cirque Du Freak: A Living Nightmare by Darren Shan, and after that, The Devouring by Simon Holt.

message 113: by Brett (new)

989632 I tend to read several books at once. Right now I am reading Bleak History by John Shirley, La Vida Vampire by Nancy Haddock and Staked by JF Lewis.

Shirley's book will be great, his usually are. Staked is also a very good one and I also have the 2nd book, Re-vamped. La Vida Vampire I'm not sure of yet as I just got started.

989632 Levi wrote: "I found it! I found my Oct./Halloween read!!!

I hope..."

Oh yeah, you're going to like this one. I'm about to start reading it again simply because I like it so much.

message 111: by Brett (new)

989632 Nona wrote: "thanks to the groups suggestions I got Patricia Briggs Moon Called and Iron Kissed from the library, I know I'm missing the second but oh well. Only ten pages into it and I have to admitt I'm likin..."

This is a fantastic series IMHO. BTW, you're really missing out by skipping the 2nd book.
There are some other writers like Briggs that I like too. One is Rachel Caine. Her Weather Warden series is the best and the Morganville Vampire series is even better. She just started another series that looks to be good as well; Outcast Season series. Only one book in it so far. There are 8 books in the Warden series and 7 in the Morganville series.

989632 Levi wrote: "Reading The Strain, as some of you may know already I am really liking it. :)"

The Strain is great! I can't wait for the next book.

message 109: by Jim (new)

695116 I gave up on Stray by Rachel Vincent. Well written, but the heroine's attitude just made me want to throttle her. I feel it was a personal failing. Too close to home since I felt more like her father who was very much in the background, just reviled by her.

The good news is that it allowed me to finish To Ride Hell's Chasm by Janny Wurts. Wow! I actually sat for 3 hours straight to finish the last 200 pages. I can rarely sit still through a 1 hour TV show, yet was glued to the chair & still felt like I got a cardiovascular workout. Incredibly exciting. Not supernatural, but fantasy/sword & sorcery.

message 108: by Levi (new)

2366694 So I finished City of Bones in like 5 days (Longer than I would have, but I was very busy.) Anyway it was really good, I would be reading the next one but I don't feel like it right now. So, I went to Walmart today and I bought Dean Koontz's Frankenstein: Prodigal Son: A Novel and I will start that today along with Her Fearful Symmetry: A Novel.

message 107: by Levi (new)

2366694 I'm also reading City of Bones, just got it today at one of my most favotrite stores!!! B&N!!!

message 106: by Rachel (new)

1575697 I'm reading The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly. About 1/3 of the way through, kinda slow start but getting really interesting.

message 105: by Jo (new)

2457455 Im reading The Hunger Games

message 104: by Nona (new)

1521956 well I started Betrayed but I'm going to put it on my I-want-to-read-but-not-at-the-moment shelf. Some reason or another I cannot get into it, sadly I think I'm burnt on teenage vampire books and shows for awhile, I'll keep watching the shows though :)

message 103: by Levi (new)

2366694 I saw she had a new book that came out sometime this year while I was at B&N yesterday. I might check it out I will definately get a huge chance to read on the plane to and from Germany in April!!! :)

message 102: by Elvia (new)

2241602 Kelley Armstrong is one of my fave authors. I've read them all so far.

I ust finishe The Strain last night and LOVED it. I think I'm going to start Touch the Dark by Karen Chance now.

Nophoto-u-25x33 Nona wrote: "I ordered Dean Koontz' Funhouse, I hear it's supposed to be srcay and creepy. It will be my first Koontz book so we'll see."

Funhouse is creepy. I think it was one of Dean's earlier books. He is my all time favorite writer. Try Lightning or the Odd books or Strangers. Strangers was the first one I read and I was hooked.

2457455 I've read The Summoning from her Darkest Powers (?) series. It was pretty good.

message 99: by Jim (new)

695116 There are quite a few & they're getting more & more popular. She's written some other stuff, too.

1. Bitten (2001)
2. Stolen (2002)
3. Dime Store Magic (2003)
4. Industrial Magic (2004)
5. Haunted (2005)
6. Broken (2006)
7. No Humans Involved (2007)
8. Personal Demon (2008)
9. Living with the Dead (2008)
10. Frost Bitten (2009)
11. Waking the Witch (2010)

We have up through #6 & Erin's read them all. I'm not sure if I finished #5, but I read #3 & 4 first, then 1, 2 & 5.

message 98: by Maya (new)

2723427 Bitten was very good im planning on getting the rest of her books cant wait to get them

message 97: by Jim (new)

695116 My daughter really liked "Bitten" & the rest a lot. I liked Dime Store Magic & Industrial Magic the best. Another heroine who is more of a witch, no werewolves. Part of the same series, although very different.

message 96: by Jo (new)

2457455 I have Bitten at home. I am glad you are liking it. Hopefully i will like it too!

message 95: by Twoina (new)

Nophoto-u-25x33 I'm reading Bitten by Kelly Armstrong. It's about werewolves and I'm really liking it. It was published in 2001 so I'm prolly behind the times. It's the first book of a series called Women of the Oherworld. I'm almost finished so I have to get my hands on the next one called Stolen.

message 94: by Janet (new)

2377158 The first blue bloods book has a bit too much fashion stuff in it - but if you can get thru that the story line really picks up and twists and turns. You almost need a chart to follow some of the families blood lines but it makes it all the more interesting.

I have not read Blood Red - I will add it to my list.

message 93: by Nona (new)

1521956 I think I'm going to request Blue Bloods through the library, they've got a little bit of a hold but I'm in no hurry.

message 92: by Jo (new)

2457455 I really liked Blue Bloods

message 91: by Nona (new)

1521956 finished Marked, eeehhh. not good not bad not a recommended one either.

Next up I can't decide if I'm going to read Wither, New England witch story for the coming Fall (yeah I know I'm wishing) or something else.

message 90: by Levi (new)

2366694 I found it! I found my Oct./Halloween read!!!

It is: Blood Red. And the best thing is I don't even have to buy it or anything I forgot I had bought this the begining of this summer! :)
