1412216 The only problem I'm experiencing is the status of my "currently reading" book isn't updating in Facebook. The page count and the comments are showing correctly in Goodreads, but on Facebook my profile box shows the first update only.

I'm really glad there is a Facebook interface! Overall its working very well and is useful. Thanks.

EDITED TO ADD: When I went into profile box settings and previewed, it updated my comments and page count on Facebook. Even though I didn't make any adjustments to the settings. FYI.

1671225 What if I want to remain signed in to Facebook when I sign out of Goodreads? If I then sign back into Facebook will I be automatically signed in again to Goodreads. In other words if I once enable Facebook Connect, does it mean the accounts are linked to the extent that they can't be used independently? As of now I haven't linked Goodreads to Facebook but was thinking of doing so.

Unfortunately, this is the way facebook connect works. You could try complaining to facebook, but we don't have any control over this.

1237196 I have a Goodreads tab on my Facebook page. Does this mean I will be able to use Goodreads from FB?

message 6: by MICHAEL, Problems Architect (new)

73 So we have had a goodreads facebook application for nearly 2 years: http://apps.facebook.com/good_reads/

The app lets you use goodreads inside of facebook, which is kind of boring compared with using www.goodreads.com (less features, less polished UI, etc.)

Facebook Connect is different, it will allow you to login to goodreads using your facebook credentials, so you're still using www.goodreads.com, but you can do some facebook related things that you couldn't do before, and you get the full Goodreads experience.

We know, it's a little confusing, but we're just trying it out.

1271498 So if GR is used from the FB tab, its just like one application on one site.

message 8: by Petra X (new)

1237196 Since I prefer GR to FB and GR is less functional in FB and I do not want to have to be logged into both at a time I guess I will drop FB Connect and use the sites separately.

I don't want all the bits of my online life to be connected. I like them - and the people I chat to and who read my various blogs and comments who have different interests (mostly not books) - to remain separate.

Amen. (Not that I have FB anyway.)

message 10: by Epee (new)

1271498 That's how I feel. I can't see a single advantage to melding GR and FB. How am I supposed to chat to my real life friends if I have to take into account all my GR buddies who know nothing of my personal life? I don't want my book buddies involved in my day-to-day life.

I like this setting...the play-by-play updates when I read a book, add a book in my TBR list, etc. It's much better than people who put things like "I just brushed my teeth" as their status in FB.

It's clearly not for everyone. Having a facebook account will never be a requirement to enjoy all the great parts of Goodreads.

I have a few GR friends on my FB account who update what page they on every time they put the book down. I've counted something like 20 updates from one of them yesterday. I don't think its more fascinating reading .....'s on page 232 of 549 ..... than someone brushed their teeth!

In any case, my GR friends I interact with here and my other friends, mostly rl, plainly have nothing like the interest in GR or books. So, although I was excited about putting GR onto FB when I joined it the other day, I now see it as a possible source of boredom for some of my friends and reading duplicate info for the GR ones.

What I would like is to be able to control what does go on to FB. I would really like to be able to publish my reviews alone on it and nothing else, is this/will this be possible?

currently we have 5 options for facebook.
* reviews (not including toreads)
* to-reads
* trivia
* status updates (on page blah)
* comments

nothing else gets sent to the feed, so if you want to only publish reviews, uncheck all of the other boxes, and you'll have to grant goodreads the facebook offline access permission.

Thanks Michael, that's really great! I didn't know that as I have the app working from the FB side. So if I lose that, I can do it from here with just the option I want.

I am not sure how to do this. I don't seem to be able find the right page with these options on, can you give me a link, please?

message 17: by MICHAEL, Problems Architect (new)

73 opps, i meant to post the link:

http://www.goodreads.com/user/edit?tab=a...

in the facebook section

message 18: by Beth A. (new)

889182 I currently have the facebook app without Facebook Connect, and have my updates disabled.

When I post a review I have the option to "Share this review on facebook."

I really like being able to choose to post only books that will interest my rl friends. And now I don't get those pesky "Do you really read three books a day" comments when I finally get around to posting all my reviews.

Sorry, I really can't find anywhere with tabs for
* reviews (not including toreads)
* to-reads
* trivia
* status updates (on page blah)
* comments.

The link you sent me was only to the apps page not to any page with checkboxes on it. First I hit Facebook 'Add the Goodreads...' and it went through a long 'test' and then a screen about enabling permission and that was that.

So then I uninstalled that and went back to that same link you sent me and hit Facebook feed updates and didn't get anything with checkboxes.

I am almost certainly missing something here, so can you please send me the exact url (if there is a name in it I can substitute mine) of where these checkboxes are? Thanks very much, sorry about being so dense.

message 20: by Rachael (new)

1065804 PetraX, The apps page is the page with the checkboxes, if you have facebook and goodread linked. I followed his link and it asked me to enter my password then took me directly to the aps page with the check boxes. I think your problem is that you didn't have facebook and goodreads linked. You linked them and then said you unistalled and then went back to the page. If you linked them and then went back to the page without uninstalling, you would have seen the checkboxes.

message 21: by Petra X (new)

1237196 Ok, I'll try again, thanks Rachael.

Thing is I have put a box with books on FB now and that looks all right but I would still like the reviews, so I guess I will have to uninstall this first. Going to try now...

message 22: by Petra X (last edited Jul 09, 2009 07:00PM) (new)

1237196 Ok, I did it. But it took me forever. I understand the mistake. I added the app, but then went straight to FB and enabled the feed from there, you don't get the boxes that way, only if you enable the feed from GR.

Maybe I'm the only one who had this problem. But if I'm not then maybe you would consider explaining that you have to do the enabling from GR not FB to get the choice.

Thanks for all the help.

message 23: by MICHAEL, Problems Architect (new)

73 if you've managed to grant the offline access privilege, you're mostly there. If Goodreads thinks you have the offline access privilege, the checkboxes show up on http://www.goodreads.com/user/edit?tab=a...

Occasionally (it seems like in your case) facebook and goodreads get out of sync.

I have a question about this. I use Facebook and GR, but I have not enabled this. I still sign in to GR regularly (and with a different email and password than FB) but lately if I happen to have FB and GR open and signed in in different tabs and I log out of GR, I get a message that says I'm also signing out of FB.

Why? I haven't enabled Connect (I doubt its something I could do accidentally) and I do want the two separate (aside from the GR app in my boxes.) Incidentally, I don't get anything GR posted to my wall, which sounds like it should happen with Connect. Can someone explain? Thanks.

message 25: by Evan (new)

1248986 This is fucked. I sign off GR and it signs me off FB, when I don't want to be signed out of FB. I was wondering if others were having this problem. Guess I'll remove my GR app from FB, because I don't need this hassle.

message 26: by Evan (new)

1248986 All kinds of problems. Not only did I write the above complaint, but it didn't seem to "post." So I hit it again, and it posted twice. Now it won't let me delete the second one. Also another issue today is the screwed up pull down shelf issue, wherein I can't add anything to my WWII shelf because the list truncates at the T's. The whole site is messing up today.

message 27: by rivka (new)

171430 Evan, the first part is because you must be using Facebook Connect, and that's how it works. That is out of GR's control.

As for the shelf issue, it is not yet 9 am here in California, where the GR programmers live. Breathe, guys, they'll be on soon!

message 28: by Evan (new)

1248986 The shelf issue is a multi-facted one and it's spread over a lot of feedback threads. I'm sure that some other part of the site was "improved", however. OK OK, breathe.

message 29: by Otis, Chief Architect (new)

1 The shelf issue should be fixed today - sorry about that!

The FB connect issue is annoying - but Facebook requires us to do that if we use Facebook Connect. I suppose we could give you the option to just disconnect instead?

message 30: by Angie (new)

86285 My currently reading book does not seem to be updating on FB. It is still showing a book I read a while ago. Any way to fix this?

message 31: by MJ (new)

782069 Well it finally happened I having problems with FB updating. I posted a review for a book on GR when I tried to post it to FB i got the following error message

Application response error

Is this FB or GR? And how do I fix it.

message 32: by Otis, Chief Architect (new)

1 Sounds like a connectivity error - usually just try again and it will work.

message 33: by MJ (new)

782069 It will allow me to post reviews for other books on FB but this one book, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, it will not. I have tried 4-5 times.

message 34: by Gene (new)

575738 when i tried it worked fine

message 35: by MJ (new)

782069 still not working for that one book

message 36: by Margaret (new)

449126 I have had a problem with my goodreads/facebook functionality. I don't know if this will help or not. But I have a goodreads account and so does my son. For some reason, when my post a new goodreads book to my goodreads account it doesn't list my book to goodreads. It does list my son's books though onto facebook as if they were my own. So I had to take it off.

message 37: by Ann (new)

2775834 I'm using the FB/GR application, and mostly really like it. My problem: I'm currently reading three books, have my profile box settings set to show 4 books from "currently reading" (have tried both grid style and list style), but it only will show one book under "currently reading." This is the box on my profile along the left margin -- when I go to my currently reading shelf under the GR tab, the books all three show up. What am I doing wrong?

message 38: by Barbara (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 When I try to invite Facebook friends to Goodreads---I get a response from Goodreads which says
"All your Facebook friends are friends". This is new.
Any suggestions?
