Well, there are just SO many to suggest, but IMO, any mystery reader should at least read the best of the best: Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes.

My favorite thriller/suspensers: Daniel Silva (a must read), Lee Child, Joseph Finder, Zoe Sharp, Tess Gerritsen, CJ Box, and Kent Krueger (William). And (she said modestly) me.
Do give Patricia Highsmith a try if you haven't already. Wonderful page-turning excitement that can eliminate all desire for sleep.

A couple of page turners I enjoy are Tess Gerritsen - try her newest The Keepsake (2008) and Dean Koontz - his newest, Relentless (2009), was really good. Of course, if you haven't read Dan Brown try Angels and Demons or The Davinci Code (before you see the movies). I need fast paced thrillers that keep me turning the pages.

I can also recommend Libby (Fischer Hellmann)...and not have to do it modestly. She knows suspense! I'll also add Gregg Hurwitz to the list. His CRIME WRITER was one of my top reads of 2008.
I would suggest Harlan Coben, Michael Connelly,Faye Kellerman and Laura Lippman. I also am a big fan of Tess Gerritsen.
Some series you might try are Alex Kava (A Perfect Evil is the first) and Carol O'Connell (Mallory's Oracle is the first). Both are real page turners and well-written. Another great author is Minette Walters - she's a great British author who writes psychological suspense and some of her books have been made into TV movies in Britain (The Sculptress is one). There's also Steve Berry, Chelsea Cain, and James Lee Burke to try. I agree with previous posts that Harlan Coben, James Patterson, and Stuart Woods are great suspense writers.So many books, so little time.... Good luck, Krista!

for P. J. Tracey: Monkeewrench; LIve Bait and Dead Run(more enjoyable if read in order.
For John Lescroat: The 13th Juror and The Second Chair.
My favorite author right now is Brian Freeman with his first series book titled IMMORAL. It is a police detective series but the genre can be classified as psychological suspense.

Mary JL, if you like Lee Driver, be sure to read books by S.D. Tooley. Lee Driver is a pseudonym of Sandra Tooley's. Her other mystery series starts with When The Dead Speak.

May I suggest my own books here? The Death Contingency is a why mystery and Backyard Bones is a real who-dunnit with lots of suspects and red herrings.

I've liked all of the ones I've read so far over the years.

I'm just about to start reading my first James Patterson book, Kiss The Girls. I've heard that his chapters are short and pretty easy to read.
I just read my first Dennis Lehane novel: Gone Baby Gone. It's an absolutely riveting read, where a simple plot becomes increasingly complex with the twists and turns. This is a dark novel, however the loving relationship between the pair of P.I.s are welcome relief. He's an excellent writer!
