1430273 I recently finnished reading The Scarlet Letter, and it was the second thing I have read thus far by Hawthorne, the first being The Blithedale Romance, while I enjoyed The Blithedale Romance, I was truly blown away by The Scarlet Letter.

I thought it was truly a remarkable book, it had drawn me in from the start, and I was always left eager to read more of it. I thought he painted a very vivid scene and I found Hester to be quite engaging, and I just loved Pearl and thought Hawthrone really brought her to life.

It was truly an interesting read and quite moving.

2241725 It seems from what I've read, people either love The Scarlet Letter or hated it. I loved it.

Everything about the book was good. With the plot you definitely felt sympathetic for the plight of Hester, Pearl, and the Priest. Hawthorne's
active narration was something different altogether I've never read, and it took surprisingly no time at all to catch on.

I will say though, you couldn't pay me to read Hawthorne's introduction again. Can you imagine if every introduction was like that? Geesh

That's odd. I never came across anyone who didn't read Scarlet Letter first or only Scarlet Letter. People usually have to read it in high school and never even get to Hawthorne's other works. Would you recommend Blithedale Romance?

By the way, one of my favorite aspects of Scarlet Letter was the descriptions, so I know what you mean about the vivid scenes. One thing you may want to look out for if you ever read it again is the play of light and shadow. Hawthorne really liked to emphasize the contrast between light and dark. Chiaroscuro, I think is the term.

1430273 I think the the Blithedale Romance is worth reading particuarly if you enjoy Hawthrone in general, though I did read it for an English course and I was about one of the only people in the class who did enjoy it, I found it interesting.

2241725 Silver, is the narration in The Blithedale Romance similar to The Scarlet Letter? I've been meaning to read more Hawthorne since the Letter
