2398330 Here we can discuss reading rates (how long it takes you to read a book), and how much we read! My average reading rate is probably 300 pages per day, but my maximum reading rate is 1200 pages per day (I know this because I have just read 4 books of the Warriors series in one day).

1761473 Dang! You read fast.
I normally read about 300 pages a day, more or less. The most I've read in a day is probably 500 pages.

message 3: by Brenda (new)

2424743 It depends on why I am reading the book and how good the book truly is. I tell my students (I'm a teacher-librarian) that I read one YA book a night on average. But during the summer when I spend the majority of my time reading to prepare for the following year...I can read 3 to 4 books a day where I basically speed read (skip every other chapter...skip pages when it is just fluff, ect) or read 2 books a day if the books are really good and I want to read every word slowly and savor them.

2369156 You guys are LOSERS!!!
I am a really slow reader!
I can only read about 100 pages max.

message 5: by Zooworld (new)

2398330 You're not a loser if you're a fast reader... Admittedly, I read fastest when it's a new book, and I know I'm not skim reading! I never skim read, generally because I don't read books that I know I will rate one star. I suppose where your eyes are focusing affects your reading rate: if your eyes are travelling left to right on every line, you will read slower!

2047735 I am not sure of my average reading rate, but I read the last Harry Potter book in a day, which is about... 759 pages. Normally I don't read that much, but I was on vacation and was just relaxing with a good book. I love to read, but I am still in school, and only have time to read at night. I also do camps over the summer, so I don't have much reading time then either. I can read anywhere from 50 to 200 pages at night (night starting at 8) depending on how late I stay up.

message 7: by Angie, YA lovin mod!! (new)

86285 I have no idea how many pages I read a day. I have tried to figure it out before but I guess it depends on the day. But I do know I am a fast reader. My husband says I read too fast and miss the details but I disagree with him. I just read so many books that sometimes I forget details from older books.

2159945 You go Darby. I read really slow too. Probably about 100 pages per day, unless I get really caught up in the book and stay up until like 2 in the morning.

I remember when I was in elementary school I would always feel bad because the teacher would say "Is everyone finished reading?" and I would be the only one who would have to say no. It made me feel really stupid, even though I am really smart. :(

Now that I am a teacher, I try really hard to remember that how fast or slow you read has nothing to do with whether or not you are a good reader.

message 9: by Darby (new)

2369156 Yeah, if I like the book a lot I stay up really late.

Nophoto-f-25x33 Darby and Lynne- I think slow readers are great, and I'm very jealous of you! Although I love reading, I blow through books, and so it always seems that I finish the really good ones way too early. And, because I read so fast, whenever I go somewhere I need to pack 10+ thick books to keep me occupied. It's a pain!

For me it really depends on the book and how much I'm enjoying it/focusing on it. I don't typically time myself, but I think it took me between 2-3 hours (with lunch in between) to finish Cindy Pon's "Silver Phoenix", which is a tad over 300 pages. I think I finished the last Harry Potter in something like 8 hours. So I suppose that means that I can read around 100 pages an hour? If I had to guess, though, I'd say I could only do like 1800 pages in a day, but after that I'd probably have a headache.

If I'm really enjoying something, it typically takes me longer- I like to savor really good books. It doesn't happen often, but the Tamora Pierce books take me hours to read, even though they're pretty short and easy reading, because I really get immersed in them.

83445 Allison, I read really slowly and while it's wonderful to savor a great book, I wish I could read much faster. That way, I could read many more books!

Edit: I figure fast readers can always slow down but slow readers find it harder to speed up. I can speed read but that's not how I want to read novels.

message 12: by Ralph (new)

2121149 I usually read about a novel a day. (When it's a book I liked!) Sometimes two if they're really good. I read the last Harry Potter book in 6 and half hours. :D

message 13: by Megan (new)

541359 Depending on the book, I can read about 200-300 pages a day.

message 14: by Lynne (new)

2159945 I guess the grass is always greener in someone elses yard. We slow readers want to read fast so we can read more books, you fast readers want to read more slowly so you can spend more time with a book or characters you are really enjoying. Good thing there are pluses to both styles!

message 15: by Allison (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 I can certainly understand the benefits of reading fast, as well. It's really handy when you have a book report due the next day, or if you need to do a lot of reading in a short time. I guess what I was just getting at is that there are pros and cons to both types of readers!

message 16: by Lynne (new)

2159945 Being a teacher (even if it is math) I'll pretend I didn't see the part about how fast readers might leave book reports until the day before! LOL *wink*

message 17: by Allison (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 hey, we all do things at our own pace. My pace just happens to be "OH GOD, OH GOD WHY DIDN'T I START THIS EARLIER?!" ;)

message 18: by Ralph (new)

2121149 For some reason when I waited till the last minutes I got an A on all my projects. If I actually spent like two weeks working on them I got a C. =[

I knowwww. I have the same problem. Whenever I'd put time aside to work responsibly, I'd get B's. My final paper in my ENG 300 class was finished 20 minutes before the class, with minimal revisions. Not only did my professor give me an A, but she pulled me aside and told me it was the best paper she had read all year. Eep.

:( Way to encourage procrastination.

Last semester I had an hour and a half free before my English class so I would always go home after Music 105, do my English essays, drive back to campus, turn them in and get an A. :D (Then again, I think the fact that I knew how to use proper grammar may have been a factor. 90% of our class couldn't speak or write with any type of proper grammar. They all talked/wrote like the stereotypical black people who don't think they should bother learning English. No offence to anyone, that's just how they talked and wrote.)

message 21: by Natalee (new)

1499743 I'm so jealous of everyone's time and commitment to reading! I wish I could read a book a day. Somedays I'll get several hours in and other days I don't even get 5 minutes.

1619252 Lisa said : I figure fast readers can always slow down but slow readers find it harder to speed up. I can speed read but that's not how I want to read novels.

That's kind of true but not really. When I'm reading fast, it's hard to force myself to slow down when I really want to find out what will happen. The only thing that works for me is to stop in the middle of a book and start over from the beginning again. That way I can savor the first half of the book without knowing how it will end.

There is something so magical about reading a book for the first time - it seems like slow readers can enjoy that more than fast ones.

message 23: by Lisa (new)

83445 Bookwink. Well, I can believe that. That's how I used to feel about walking; it was so much harder to walk slowly than quickly.

I do enjoy savoring a book, but I am sad that I can read so many fewer books than I could if I could read quickly.

message 24: by Ashley (new)

257698 I read on average, 2-3 books per month. Sometimes I read less because I'll have my lazy spells where I don't feel like reading. My big record so far is I read 6 books in one month a couple of years ago.

message 25: by Nicole (last edited Jul 27, 2009 05:39PM) (new)

2047735 I normally read a good 6-8 books a month. Sometimes I will fall behind when I am very busy and have little time to read. My average library trip usually brings me home with about 6 new books I must read in the next two weeks, so I tend to read fairly quickly. I have trouble savoring my books, becuase I SO BADLY want to know what is going to happen next! It annoys me sometimes, because there are so many books out there, that I don't want to reread the ones I have already read, but I read so much, I forgot what happened in a good many of them!

message 26: by Jennifer (new)

2268561 I'm not sure how many pages I read a day, but I go for 2-3 books a week...although this week I'm at a book a day

message 27: by Diane (new)

108753 I try to read a book or 2 a week, but if I'm really busy with my full time and part-time job that doesn't happen. I'm on vacation right now, and I've been reading a book each day. I love it!

message 28: by Mounica (last edited Aug 04, 2009 11:12AM) (new)

1171337 I try to read as much as I can during the summer, about 8 books a month. But once school starts, it goes down to two to three books. Oh, I wish I had the time! =)

message 29: by Maxi (new)

1524104 On average I read about 250 pages to 500 pages in a day, depending on the day and the book. I usually finish one book per sitting, and per day though.

message 30: by Amy (new)

2463255 My rate of reading usually depends on what I'm doing or how busy I've been. It can be anywhere between 1 and 150 pages. Occasionally I get to read more than that but not very often.

message 31: by Mackenzie (new)

2172803 I really don't know how many pages I read in a day, it really depends but I think on average I read 250 pages a day.

Usually I read between 2 and 4 books in a week, depending on how busy I am and how much time I have to read but there are weeks when I can read a book a day.

message 32: by Stephanie (new)

2135965 I try to shoot for a book a week but it doesnt' always happen. It depends on how busy I am.
